The essential idea of de-noising is referring to neighboring pixels of a center pixel to be updated. Conventional adaptive de-noising filters use local statistics, i.e., mean and variance, of neighboring pixels including the center pixel. The drawback of adaptive de-noising filters is that their performance becomes low when edges are contained in neighboring pixels, while anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters remove adaptively noises and preserve edges considering intensity difference between neighboring pixel and the center pixel. The anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters, however, use only intensity difference between neighboring pixels and the center pixel, i.e., local statistics of neighboring pixels and the center pixel are not considered. We propose a new connectivity function of two adjacent pixels using statistics of neighboring pixels and apply connectivity function to diffusion coefficient. Experimental results using an aerial image corrupted by uniform and Gaussian noises showed that the proposed algorithm removed more efficiently noises than conventional diffusion filter and median filter.
In this paper, an adaptive temporal and spatial filter (ATSF) based on mean square error (MSE) estimation is proposed. ATSF is a block based de-noising algorithm. Each noisy block is selectively filtered by a temporal filter or a spatial filter. Multi-hypothesis motion compensated filter (MHMCF) and bilateral filter are chosen as the temporal filter and the spatial filter, respectively. Although there is no original video, we mathematically derivate a formular to estimate the real MSE between a block de-noised by MHMCF and its original block and a linear model is proposed to estimate the real MSE between a block de-noised by bilateral filter and its original block. Finally, each noisy block is processed by the filter with a smaller estimated MSE. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm achieves substantial improvements in terms of both visual quality and PSNR as compared with the conventional de-noising algorithms.

In de-noising, it is wellknown that wavelet-thresholding algorithm shows near-optimal performances in the minimax sense. However, the wavelet-thresholding algorithm is difficult in realization it on hardware, such as FPGA, because of wavelet function complexity. In this paper, we present a new do-noising technique with the binary tree structured filter bank, which is based on the signal power ratio of each subbands to the total signal power. And we realize it on FPGA. For simple realization, the filter banks are designed by Hadamard transform coefficients. The simulation and hardware experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is similar with that of soft thresholding de-noising algorithm based on wavelets, nevertheless it is simple.
The main purpose of this paper is to compare the performances of various filters with color images to remove the noise. Furthermore, we suggest a modified de-noising process by the transformation of color model from RGB to another color models, such as HSV and $YC_BC_R$, to improve the quality of de-noising methods encompassing Median, Wiener, and Mean filters. Neither the performance comparison of the de-noising filters with color images nor the converting the color model for better de-noise on the degraded images haven't been performed before. Inspired to make improvements, we conduct experiments with new de-noising process on color images. The result of the experiments is shown that it could assist on certain filters being more reliable techniques.

In this paper, a study of advanced sound source localization is conducted by eliminating the noise of the sound source using the discrete wavelet transform. And experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed system that the mobile robot follows sound source stably. In addition, we compare the position estimation performance by applying a discrete wavelet transform to improve the reliability of the sound signal. The experimental results reveal that the de-nosing filter which removes the noise component in sound source can make the performance of position estimation more precisely and help the mobile robot distinguish the objective sound source clearly.

To achieve the challenges of low-cost MEMS gyros for the precise self-localization of mobile robots, this paper examines an effective method of minimizing the drift on the heading angle that relies solely on integration of rate signals from a gyro. The main idea of the proposed approach is to use wavelet de-noising filter in order to reduce random noise which affects short-term performances. The proposed method was applied to Epson XV3500 gyro and the performances are verified by the comparisons with an existing commercial gyro module of vacuum cleaning robots.

Generally, images are corrupted by the impulse or AWGN and there are cases where both of these noises are added at once. When it comes to eliminating the noises added to the image, the previous median filter is effective in removing the impulse noise and the average filter is effective for removing AWGN. However, when the complex noises are added, it lacks the noise suppression characteristics, thus in this paper, a non-linear filter algorithm for removing the complex noises was proposed. The simulation results shows the proposed algorithm has excellent de-noising capabilities of compare existing methods.

A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission (AE) in plates whose thichness are close to or thinner than the wavelength has been studied by introducing wavelet transform de-noising technique. The detected AE signals were pre-processed using wavelet transform to be decomposed into the low-frequency, high-amplitude flexural components and the high-frequency, low-amplitude extensional components. If the wavelet transform de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the extensional wave component, one of the critical errors of source location in plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved and independent of the setting of gain and threshold, plate thickness, sensor-to-sensor distance, and the relative position of source to sensors. Since the method utilizes the flexural component of relatively high amplitude, it could be applied to very large, thin-walled structures in practice.

There are many dynamic properties in measured end-milling force. So, it is difficult to predict the real static property of end-milling force. Also the behavior of end-milling force is very complex to predict with the measured one. To extract the static property from measured force, it must be filtered and its problem is closely related to a de-noising one. Also this paper presents alternative de-noising method of end-milling force using wavelet filter bank, based on the wavelet transform and its inverse one. In this paper, by comparing the measured force and its wavelet filtered one, the fundamental end-milling force property after wavelet transform is well reviewed and analyzed. This result of wavelet filtering with filter bank shows the static force of end-milling which has severe dynamic properties occurring in entry and exit state of edge emersion into the workpiece.

A location estimation algorithm based on the sea-surface beacon is proposed in this paper. The beacon is utilized to provide ultrasonic signals to the underwater vehicles around the beacon to estimate precise position of underwater vehicles (ROV, AUV, Diver robot), which is named as USBL (Ultra Short Baseline) system. It utilizes GPS and INS data for estimating its position and adopts DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) de-noising filter and UKF (Unscented KALMAN Filter) elaborating the position estimation. The beacon system aims at estimating the precise position of underwater vehicle by using USBL to receive the tracking signals. The most important one for the precise position estimation of underwater vehicle is estimating the position of the beacon system precisely. Since the beacon is on the sea-waves, the received GPS signals are noisy and unstable most of times. Therefore, the INS data (gyroscope sensor, accelerometer, magnetic compass) are obtained at the beacon on the sea-surface to compensate for the inaccuracy of the GPS data. The noises in the acceleration data from INS data are reduced by using DWT de-noising filter in this research. Finally the UKF localization system is proposed in this paper and the system performance is verified by real experiments.
