  • This study investigated the effect of planting density on growth and yield of elephant garlic. Three planting densities of 20 × 20, 20 × 15, and 20 × 10 ㎝ were tested with the furrow width fixed at 120 ㎝ for the evaluation of elephant galic growth and yield. The average date of emergence was middle and late November, requiring about 30 days for the all emergence. For the flowering, 221 days after sowing were required in all the treatments. Plant height and leaf growth were not significantly different according to the planting density. Flower stalk was shorter when planting density was narrow. The L/D ratio was decreased to form oval shape when planting density was narrow. The yield of elephant garlic was 1,811 ㎏ /10a in planting density 20 × 20 ㎝, 2,375 ㎏/10a in 20 × 15 ㎝, and 2,838 ㎏/10a in 20 × 10 ㎝ plot. The marketable garlic ratio was highest as 1,593 ㎏/10a in planting density of 20 × 15 ㎝.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth of lactic acid bacteria and quality characteristics of Baechu kimchi prepared with four types of salt (Solar salt, Flower salt, Hanju salt, and Roasted salt) at two different concentrations (10, 15%) during storage. The quality characteristics of kimchi were examined by investigating acid production, growth of lactic acid bacteria, sensory properties, salinity, texture, and color characteristics. Baechu kimchi was fermented for 18 days at $10^{\circ}C$. The pH and total acidity did not change during storage according to type and concentration of salt. Growth of lactic acid bacteria was not affected by type of salt, whereas it was inhibited at 15% salt concentration after 9 days of fermentation. In the quantitative descriptive analysis of sensory properties, kimchi prepared with 10% salt showed significantly higher scores in term of overall acceptability (p<0.05). Meanwhile, there was no significant difference by type of salt. For texture characteristics, hardness of kimchi prepared with 10% salt was significantly higher than that with 20% salt. For color characteristics, L value (brightness) and b values (yellowness) of kimchi prepared with 10% salt increased during fermentation, whereas a value (redness) did not change by type and concentration of salt. The results of this study show that there were no considerable differences in quality characteristics of Baechu kimchi prepared with various types and concentrations of salt. However, Solar salt resulted in more favorable sensory properties and salinity of kimchi than any other types. Further, kimchi prepared with 10% salt showed significantly higher scores in terms of overall acceptability, growth of lactic acid bacteria, salinity, texture, and color characteristics.

  • Rice is a major food crop consumed by approximately half of the world's population. Heading date is one of the major agronomic traits and has a wide impact on the productivity and quality of rice. Recently, shortening the growth period of rice through modulating heading date has been emphasized as one of the most effective strategies for reducing methane emissions from paddy fields. OsPRR37, a major heading date gene in rice, represses flowering under both short-day and long-day conditions. Plants carrying the loss-of-function alleles of OsPRR37 have been reported to flower approximately seven days and 20 days earlier than those carrying the functional alleles in short day and long day conditions, respectively. In this study, we investigated the nucleotide sequence variation existing in the exonic regions of OsPRR37 and catalogued the allelic distribution in 208 Korean rice cultivars. We used four sets of primers for amplifying and sequencing the eight exons of OsPRR37. As a result, two types of loss-of-function alleles and four types of functional alleles were found in 208 Korean rice cultivars. Interestingly, only three cultivars (Jinbuolbyeo, Jinseolchal, and Mimyeon) carried loss-of-function alleles while 205 carried functional alleles, indicating that OsPRR37 loss-of-function alleles have been used very rarely in Korean rice breeding programs. To generate useful information for the development of early-maturing rice cultivars, our future work will focus on analyzing the effect of different OsPRR37 alleles on heading date and other major agronomic traits.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum hydroponic system and nutrient solution for promoting the growth and flowering of hydroponically grown carnation. DFT (deep flow technique) and NFT (nutrient film technique) systems were employed and four kinds of nutrient solution, which are Cooper solution, Yamasaki solution, balanced nutrient solution by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station and PTG solution in the Netherlands were used and compared. pH was lowest in the PTG solution compared to the other nutrient solutions used. Plant height was highest in the DFT system in the plot of PTG solution as of 53.0 cm at 88 days after transplanting, while lowest in NFT system with Cooper solution. Stem diameter was more thickened in NFT system with PTG solution as of 7.2 mm at 88 days after transplanting. Days to flowering was shortened to 122.3 days in NFT system when PTG solution was used. This results suggested a combination of NFT system with PTG solution as optimum hydroponic system and nutrient solution for cut carnation production. Further trials as to the management of nutrient solution by glowing stages should be followed.

  • Tetragonia tetragonides is a medicinal plant native to ocean sand soil of southern provinces and has significant effects on the prevention and curing of gastroenteric disorders. Despite of its popularity, supply of the plant has never met the level of demand because of the absence of an adequate culturing method. The present study, thereby, was conducted for classifying the plants with geographically different characteristics, studying growth habits, developing a new culturing method and establishing a large scale propagation system of selected superior individual plants. The study was also aimed for revealing optimum conditions for seed treatment, fertilization, and efficient culturing system and thereby, for utilizing the plant as a new income source for rural communities. The seed was elongated with size of 2.6 mm (width) ${\times}$ 1.8 mm (length). No difference in seed size was observed depending on different inhabitate. Each flower produced about 4.5~4.8 seeds. Germination rate was high for seeds matured for 40 days after fertilization, but deceased to 50% for seeds matured only for 20 or 30 days. Seed dormancy lasted 6 months and seed storage at humid $5^{\circ}C$ facilitated germination. Mechanical obstruct of seed germination was due to seed coat and removal of seed coat enhanced the germination rate. Optimum temp. for seed storage was $5^{\circ}C$, and high germination rate was maintained for 350 days. However, for stratification condition or at room temperature, germination was significantly reduced as storage time increased Optimum treatment of plant growth regulators was soaking in $GA_3$ 250 mg/L for 1 hr. The priming treatment with 50 mM $Ca(NO_3)_2$ at $20^{\circ}C$ for two days improved the seed germination with 10% compared to non-treated control. The treatment of 20% NaOCl for 3 hr. improved the seed germination rate up to 10% and 1 day ahead.

  • Among the various environmental conditions necessary for growing crops, light is closely related to the anthesis. This study aimed to determine the optimal photoperiod affecting floral differentiation in an edible flower, marigold, to efficiently cultivate the crops in a closed-type plant factory. The experiment was conducted with photoperiods of 4, 8, 12, and 16 hours. French marigold (Tagetes patula L.) 'Durango Red' seeds were sown in polyurethane sponges, and the photoperiod treatments were applied immediately. The extent of floral differentiation was examined at 2-3 day intervals, defined as the visible appearance of flower buds at least 2 mm in size. The growth parameters such as shoot fresh weight and dry weight, height, and leaf area were measured. The optimal photoperiod was determined based on the days when the floral differentiation had occurred in 50% of the total plants. In the 4-hour treatment, proper growth and flower buds did not appear. From the 8-hour treatment, the plant grew normally, and floral differentiation occurred, however, the 8-hour treatment showed the slowest floral differentiation compared to the 12 hours treatments or more. The 12- and 16-hour treatments didn't show significant differences in floral differentiation. While the 16-hour treatment exhibited the highest results in all growth parameters, it was not significantly different from the 12-hour treatment except for shoot dry weight and leaf area. According to the results, 8 hours of photoperiod induced floral differentiation. However, more time was required for flower bud formation, and plant growth was significantly lower compared to photoperiods of 12 hours or more. Considering the energy consumption and its growth, the optimal photoperiod for marigold was 12 hours.

  • Properties of seed production in Corydalis, spring ephemeral, group were studied during two years at Namhansansung area. Corydalis´ flower was out in the early April and its seed dispersed in the early May. The period of total seed production was 30 days. The decrease rate of sex organs was the highest between deflowering time and early fruiting time. The numbers of flower and seed per plant were in the range of 1∼13 and 0∼76, respectively. And the number of seed per fruit was from zero to twenty. In a plant, seed production was the most (11.8 seeds) in the lowest fruit and conspicuously decreased along the upward fruit. In the same plant, seed production was various by each year. The plants of small tuber size produced more seeds and those of large tuber size produced fewer seeds in the next year than this year. In the early growth season, the flowering plants/total plants rate increased in proportion to plant size (tuber volume), the rate of the smallest size class (<100 ㎣) was in the range of 5.0%(1999)∼5.4%(2000), those over the 600 ㎣ size classes were 100%. The number of flower per plant at the same size class were higher in 2000 than in 1999. Especially, at the size class of 900 ㎣≤, the numbers of flower per plant were 13.2 in 2000 and 6.5 in 1999. In the late growth season, the flowering plants/total plants rates were 13.3%in the smallest size class (<100 ㎣)and 100% over the 500 ㎣ size classes. Therefore, the flowering plants/total plants rates along the size classes were higher in the late growth season than in the early one. The bumer of fruit or seed per plant increased in proportion to the volume and dry weight of tuber, there was not significant and varied along each plant in the same size class. The number of fruit or seed per plant conspicuously increased in proportion to the leaf area. Therefore, it was thought that seed production was related to photosynthetic ability during growth season.

  • An efficient plant regeneration protocol is developed for a standard-type chrysanthemum. When petal segments derived from flower buds (4 or 8cm in diameter) were used as the culture material, the highest shoot regeneration frequency (96%) was obtained on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L IAA, 2 mg/L BA, 3% sucrose, and a 0.8% agar. Pre-culturing the explants under dark conditions for 14 days produced better results for the shoot regeneration frequency than the explants cultured under a continuous 16 h photoperiod ($40{\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$). The shoot regeneration frequency ranged from 19.0% for the Shinmato cultivar to 89.1% for the Baeksun cultivar. Activated charcoal (0.2%) enhanced the root formation of the regenerated shoots in a hormone-free MS medium. The rooted plantlets were acclimatized and successfully established in a greenhouse.
