  • This work has carried out some preliminary studies for the utilization of a solar mini-dish system capable of concentrating solar rays to higher densities. A typical mini-dish system considered employs an array of solar mini-dishes where major components are light and compact. It consists of small mini-dishes, optical fiber bundles and diffusers at the end. Each mini-dish (typically has a 20 to 30 cm in diameter) is designed with a simple parabolic profile, concentrating sunlight (after the glass glazing cover to avoid dust deposition on the reflector and facilitate cleaning) onto a centrally-located small mirror which is placed on the bottom side of the transparent glass cover. The focused sunlight is reflected by the mirror surface onto a focal point where the receiving aperture of a homogenizer is located. Optical fibers are used to carry high-density solar rays to the other end where diffusers are mounted for indoor illumination. The proposed high density mini-dish system could make an efficient daylighting system as it excludes large moving parts and expandable if necessary. Each component of the system could be made from the off-the-shelf technology and thus, make the generic unit inexpensive to manufacture. Depending on spatial demand or characteristics, the amount of introducing daylight could be controlled. Preliminary tests have been carried out for a trial system to check any functional problems when in operation. Suggestions are also made to improve the design enhancing its performance and applicability.

  • An architectural means of optimal daylight distribution is by using so-called light shelf systems, horizontal shading and redirecting devices. The overall performance of the daylighting system can be improved by the incorporation with electric lighting control devices. This paper aims to exemplify the benefit of daylighting in term of economic consideration. In such a case a reasonable technique to compare system costs is by life-cycle costing. Stated simply, a life-cycle cost represents the total cost of a system over its entire life cycle, that is, the sum of first cost and all future costs. Four different electric lighting system designs are proposed and a lighting control system that is continuously operating according to the level of daylight in the space has been adapted. The result shows clearly that although denser layout of lighting fixtures might be more effective to interface to the level of daylight ceaselessly changeable, its economic benefit may not meet the expected criterion the reason of increased initial investment and maintenance cost for the fixtures and control devices.

  • In these days, most of the office buildings are being required to save energy for maintenance. lighting system constitutes 20% to 30% of the total annual electrical energy consumption in office buildings. As an energy saving strategy for lighting system, dimming control system based on illuminance sensors came into use. But the system is accompanied with many illuminance sensors to control lighting and needs a lot of initial investment. In this study, the prediction equation for indoor daylighting illuminance distribution is proposed through the review for conventional research results and field measurements. The proposed equation was verified by the comparison between predicted results and field measurement results. The developed prediction equation for daylighting can be used to control the indoor illuminance level with the limited sensor when dimming control system is operated.

  • Daylight is a critical factor in architecture, as it helps enhance the working efficiency and pleasantness of the people working inside, in addition to reduce the power consumption in heating and cooling and make the interior space brighter. There are many kinds of glazing and daylighting systems. At present, research and efforts for their development are carried out, alongside quantitative evaluation. This study aims to present basic materials to be used to design proper glazing and daylighting systems in architecture based on a quantitative evaluation by scale models of existing office buildings. The result of the study can be summarized as follows. 1)As a result of the experiment, it appeared that the ratio of the interior illumination (i.e. at the working table, ceiling and wall) against the outdoor illumination increases at a constant rate, as the transmittance of the glazing goes up. 2) It was found that the SIR(Sunlight Illuminance Ratio) of a separated window system goes up by 20-50% at the rear part than in the case of an ordinary window system.

  • In this age of "Information", many people consider it a deterrent to information flow to provide a hierarchy with private rooms in a modern office layout. There are others, however, who insist that visual and acoustical privacy are more important than any other design factor in achieving higher productivity. The debate may never end, but the partitioned open plan, which is a new form of the vast open plan, has merits of each concept - open and closed layout. Consequently, office design has dramatically shifted to partitioned open planning, with shorter, temporary walls or partitions, originally intended for increasing privacy and diminishing hierarchy, yet still keeping flexibility in spatial organization. The introduction of low-level partitioned spaces in an office layout, however, produces a complicated lighting design problem. Obviously, accurately predicted daylighting performance data are needed not only for daylighting design but for artificial lighting system design. Scale models of 12 sets of unit partitioned spaces are constructed and extensive scale model measurements of both daylight and reflected sunlight have been performed within an artificial sky simulator. The prototype-building interior is modeled with different partition configurations, each of which is modeled using the different envelope geometry and exterior configurations, and then the variations in interior light levels are estimated. The result indicates that partitioned spaces employed in an open plan of modern offices still offer a large potential for daylighting and energy saving as well. Much of the savings may derive from the cumulative effect of reflected sunlight. Optimal design for building envelope geometry and exterior configuration promises additional savings.

  • Though they have advantages in terms of aesthetic in modern architecture, however, rectangular-shaped towers causes being short of natural light due to deep interior space. There are compromised attempts to take advantages of each building shape selectively. As a result, we now witness the advent of Y-shaped, T-shaped, V-shaped and ㅈ-shaped buildings on the market. The mutative type of apartment houses usually faces southwest or southeast, which has lot of daylighting availability but anyhow, the proportion of the apartment houses which have a full south aspect. The need to verify the potential of daylighting in new building-block shapes exists. At the same time, the expansion of balcony area was legalized and thus, a visual buffer area does not exist any more. All-glass window wall on apartment houses without a balcony produces pretty harmful area with direct sunbeam. Recently, the refurbished version of conventional windows has been developed for the purposed of minimizing energy loss occurred around windows. This research initialized a series of research to deal with almost all on window wall for apartment houses. First of all, huge amount of already-designed examples of apartment houses have been analyzed in terms of floor plan, elevation, orientation and glazing materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the design guideline for an effective application of light shelf in office building. For this, the computer simulation using Daylighting System of 3Ds Studio Max was performed, and the optimal values related to design factors such as a depth, a surface reflectance and a installation angle of light shelf were obtained. Then daylighting performance of light shelf using the optimal values was analyzed, and the simulation results show that the installation of the optimal light shelf can improve a indoor lighting environment in office building.

  • The purpose of this paper was development of modified horizontal daylight duct for reflector of light intake, location of outlet diffuser and size as applicable daylighting system for buildings and, verified applicable possibility base on analysis of daylighting performance through full-scale model test. Experimental result showed that ratio of illumination for light duct was measured 0.3∼0.4% in interior of a room on clear sky. Also, light duct had wide distribution of illumination than duct about 150[cm] and was decided efficient lighting energy saving because of high daylight performance in case of application actual building during daytime.

  • There is something valuable in Korean traditional architecture that does not change even after more than a number of years. Each design element of traditional houses has its own role to embody natural, healthy, and environment-friendly architectural planning. With traditional already-built examples located in the northern area of Gyeongbuk province, this study attempts to untangle some of the daylighting control issues in opening design. By looking at more than just photometric materials, at some threshold level, the whole of daylighting control characteristics of their openings is being surveyed from the viewpoint of geometric relationship between their roof structures and windows. As a glazing material, in addition, Korean traditional window covering paper, Changhoji, is evaluated for its transmittal performance under artificial and real skies as well.
