  • An understanding of performance of database driven network applications is critical in combating slow performance of e-commerce web sites, besides efficient web page design, and high quality and well-maintained web server equipment. This paper describes a method of measuring performance from the user viewpoint, which can help enormously in making realistic assessment of true performance of database driven applications. The performance measurements were taken at user locations by using several specially designed JavaScript functions along with ASP scripts. A performance study is presented in this paper, comparing performance of data access using stored procedures with the traditional way of querying a database. It is generally believed that stored procedures have performance benefits as they are pre-compiled. However, our study shows that the data access approach using stored procedures provides significant benefits(by about 30%) over the traditional approach for querying a commercial MySQL database, only when retrieving a substantial amount of data(at least 10,000 rows of data).

  • Traditional physical methods for measuring solubility were often affected by viscosity, density, and surface tension. In this study, we selected appropriate electrolytes to determine the solubility of impurities in the lead-bismuth circuit at reactor operating temperatures using electrochemical methods. Taking the measurement of the solubility of impurity Ce in liquid Bi as an example, we demonstrated that electrochemical methods can accurately determine its solubility in the LiCl-KCl molten salt. Furthermore, the successful measurement of other impurities such as La, Ce, U, and Mn in lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) using the designed system has confirmed the universality of this method.

  • We propose a data-driven kinematic control method for a robotic spatial augmented reality (RSAR) system. We assume a scenario where a robotic device and a projector-camera unit (PCU) are assembled in an ad hoc manner with loose kinematic specifications, which hinders the application of a conventional kinematic control method based on the exact link and joint specifications. In the proposed method, the kinematic relation between a PCU and joints is represented as a set of B-spline surfaces based on sample data rather than analytic or differential equations. The sampling process, which automatically records the values of joint angles and the corresponding external parameters of a PCU, is performed as an off-line process when an RSAR system is installed. In an on-line process, an external parameter of a PCU at a certain joint configuration, which is directly readable from motors, can be computed by evaluating the pre-built B-spline surfaces. We provide details of the proposed method and validate the model through a comparison with an analytic RSAR model with synthetic noises to simulate assembly errors.

  • Storage services integration can be done for achieving high availability, improving data access performance and scalability while preventing vendor lock-in. However, multiple services environment management and interoperability have become a critical issue as a result of service architectures and communication interfaces heterogeneity. Storage federation model provides the integration of multiple heterogeneous and self-sufficient storage systems with a single control point and automated decision making about data distribution. In order to integrate diverse heterogeneous storage services into a single storage pool, we are proposing a storage service federation framework named BoxBroker. Moreover, an automated decision model based on a policy-driven data distribution algorithm and a service evaluation method is proposed enabling BoxBroker to make optimal decisions. Finally, a demonstration of our proposal capabilities is presented and discussed.

  • This paper presents a novel harmony search (HS)-based data-driven single input rule modules (SIRMs)-connected fuzzy inference system (FIS) for the prediction of stress in externally prestressed tendon. The proposed method attempts to extract causal relationship of a system from an input-output pairs of data even without knowing the complete physical knowledge of the system. The monotonicity property is then exploited as an additional qualitative information to obtain a meaningful SIRMs-connected FIS model. This method is then validated using results from test data of the literature. Several parameters, such as initial tendon depth to beam ratio; deviators spacing to the initial tendon depth ratio; and distance of a concentrated load from the nearest support to the effective beam span are considered. A computer simulation for estimating the stress increase in externally prestressed tendon, ${\Delta}f_{ps}$, is then reported. The contributions of this paper is two folds; (i) it contributes towards a new monotonicity-preserving data-driven FIS model in fuzzy modeling and (ii) it provides a novel solution for estimating the ${\Delta}f_{ps}$ even without a complete physical knowledge of unbonded tendons.

  • In this paper, anew parallel event-driven logic simulation is proposed. As the proposed prediction-based parallel event-driven simulation method uses both prediction data and actual data for the input and output values of local simulations executed in parallel, the synchronization overhead and the communication overhead, the major bottleneck of the performance improvement, are greatly reduced. Through the experimentation with multiple designs, we have observed the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • Bridge scour is one of the predominant causes of bridge failure. Current climate deterioration leads to increase of flooding frequency and severity and thus poses a higher risk of bridge scour failure than before. Recent studies have explored extensively the vibration-based scour monitoring technique by analyzing the structural modal properties before and after damage. However, the state-of-art of this area lacks a systematic approach with sufficient robustness and credibility for practical decision making. This paper attempts to develop a data-driven methodology for bridge scour monitoring using support vector machines. This study extracts features from the bridge dynamic responses based on a generic sensitivity study on the bridge's modal properties and selects the features that are significantly contributive to bridge scour detection. Results indicate that the proposed data-driven method can quantify the bridge scour damage with satisfactory accuracy for most cases. This paper provides an alternative methodology for bridge scour evaluation using the machine learning method. It has the potential to be practically applied for bridge safety assessment in case that scour happens.

  • We propose an inter-leg collision avoidance method that compensates the disadvantage of the data-driven biped control method. The data-driven biped control technique proposed by Lee et. al [1] sometimes generates the movement that the two legs intersect with each other while walking, which can not be realized in walking of a real person or a biped robot. The proposed method changes the angle of the swing hip so that the swing foot can move inward only after passing the stance foot. This process introduces an additional angle adjustment algorithm to avoid collisions with the stance leg to the original feedback rule of the stance hip. It generates a stable walking simulation without any inter-leg collisions, by adding minimal changes and additional calculations to the existing controller behavior.

  • There are various methods to evaluate performance of a internal combustion engine. However, there have been several limitations for each methods. In this study, to overcome such limitations of a previous method, a data-driven model and physics based model linked simulation model is developed. The representative components of turbocharged engine which participate in running loop of an engine are sorted out. Sorted out components are modeled either by data-driven method or by physics based method. The engine simulator is developed by combining component model using C++ and Python. The convergence of several variables is tested to verify a simulator. Finally, as most variables has shown less than 5% error in comparison between the simulation result and the real engine test result, it is concluded that the simulator is validated. It is expected that the developed simulator could evaluate performance of various engine models with small effort. In addition, it is expected that the developed simulator would play a key role in developing an engine digital twin.

  • The amount and continuity of precipitation data used in a hydrological analysis may exert a big influence on the reliability of the analysis. It is a fundamental process to estimate the missing data caused by such as a breakdown of the rainfall recording machine or to expand a short period of rainfall data. In this study a linear programming method treated as a data-driven approach for estimating the missing rainfall data is compared with seven other methods widely used and its superiority is certified. The data used in this research are annual precipitation ones during 17 years at the Cheolwon station including an ungauged period of 15 years and its five surrounding stations. By use of this certified method the ungauged precipitation values at the Cheolweon station are estimated and the areal averages of annual precipitation data for 32 years at the Han River basin are calculated.
