Prediction of moisture contents in green peppers using hyperspectral imaging based on a polarized lighting system

  • In this study, a multivariate analysis model of partial least square regression (PLSR) was developed to predict the moisture content of green peppers using hyperspectral imaging (HSI). In HSI, illumination is essential for high-quality image acquisition and directly affects the analytical performance of the visible near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (VIS/NIR-HSI) system. When green pepper images were acquired using a direct lighting system, the specular reflection from the surface of the objects and their intensities fluctuated with time. The images include artifacts on the surface of the materials, thereby increasing the variability of data and affecting the obtained accuracy by generating false-positive results. Therefore, images without glare on the surface of the green peppers were created using a polarization filter at the front of the camera lens and by exposing the polarizer sheet at the front of the lighting systems simultaneously. The results obtained from the PLSR analysis yielded a high determination coefficient of 0.89 value. The regression coefficients yielded by the best PLSR model were further developed for moisture content mapping in green peppers based on the selected wavelengths. Accordingly, the polarization filter helped achieve an uniform illumination and the removal of gloss and artifact glare from the green pepper images. These results demonstrate that the HSI technique with a polarized lighting system combined with chemometrics can be effectively used for high-throughput prediction of moisture content and image-based visualization.

High-Throughput Development of Polymorphic Simple Sequence Repeat Markers Using Two Whole Genome Sequence Data in Peucedanum japonicum

  • Resource plants are important and have strong potential for a variety of utilities as crops or pharmaceutical materials. However, most resource plants remain wild and thus their utility for breeding and biotechnology is limited. Molecular markers are useful to initiate genetic study and molecular breeding for these understudied resource plants. We collected various wild collections of Peucedanum japonicum which is indigenous resource plants utilized as oriental medicine and leafy vegetables in Korea. In this study, we produced two independent whole genome sequences (WGSs) from two collections and identified large scale polymorphic simple sequence repeat (pSSR) based on our pipeline to develop SSR markers based on comparison of two WGSs. We identified a total of 452 candidate pSSR contigs. To confirm the accuracy and utility of pSSR, we designed ten SSR primer pairs and successfully applied those to seven collections of P. japonicum. The WGS and pSSR candidates identified in this study will be useful resource for genetic research and breeding purpose for the valuable resource plant, P. japonicum.

Adult Trauma Patients with Isolated Thoracolumbar Spinous and Transverse Process Fractures May be Managed Conservatively to Improve Emergency Department Throughput

  • Purpose: Traumatic vertebral injuries have a prevalence of 4-5% at level I centers. Studies have demonstrated that isolated thoracolumbar transverse process fractures (iTPF) rarely require brace or surgical interventions. We hypothesized that similarly isolated thoracolumbar spinous process fractures (iSPF) would have less need for bracing and operative interventions than SPFs with associated vertebral body (VB) fractures (SPF+VB). We performed a similar analysis for iTPF compared to transverse process fractures associated with VB injury (TPF+VB). Methods: In this single-center, retrospective study from 2012 to 2016, patients were classified into iSPF, SPF+VB, iTPF, and TPF+VB groups. Data including the fracture pattern, neurologic deficits, and operative intervention were obtained. The primary outcome studied was the need for bracing and/or surgery. A statistical analysis was conducted. Results: Of 98 patients with spinous process fractures, 21 had iSPF and 77 had SPF+VB. No iSPF patients underwent surgery, whereas 24 (31.17%) SPF+VB patients did undergo surgery (p=0.012). In the iSPF group, three patients (15%) received braces only for comfort, whereas 37 (48.68%) of the SPF+VB group required bracing (p=0.058). Of 474 patients with transverse process fractures, 335 had iTPF and 139 had TPF+VB. No iTPF patients underwent surgery, whereas 28 (20.14%) TPF+VB patients did (p≤0.001). Of the iTPF patients, six (1.86%) were recommended to receive braces only for comfort, while 68 (50.75%) of the TPF+VB patients required bracing (p<0.001). Conclusions: No patients with iSPF or iTPF required surgical intervention, and bracing was recommended to patients in these groups for comfort only. It appears that these injures may be safely managed without interventions, calling into question the need for spine consultation.

QLGR: A Q-learning-based Geographic FANET Routing Algorithm Based on Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning

  • The utilization of UAVs in various fields has led to the development of flying ad hoc network (FANET) technology. In a network environment with highly dynamic topology and frequent link changes, the traditional routing technology of FANET cannot satisfy the new communication demands. Traditional routing algorithm, based on geographic location, can "fall" into a routing hole. In view of this problem, we propose a geolocation routing protocol based on multi-agent reinforcement learning, which decreases the packet loss rate and routing cost of the routing protocol. The protocol views each node as an intelligent agent and evaluates the value of its neighbor nodes through the local information. In the value function, nodes consider information such as link quality, residual energy and queue length, which reduces the possibility of a routing hole. The protocol uses global rewards to enable individual nodes to collaborate in transmitting data. The performance of the protocol is experimentally analyzed for UAVs under extreme conditions such as topology changes and energy constraints. Simulation results show that our proposed QLGR-S protocol has advantages in performance parameters such as throughput, end-to-end delay, and energy consumption compared with the traditional GPSR protocol. QLGR-S provides more reliable connectivity for UAV networking technology, safeguards the communication requirements between UAVs, and further promotes the development of UAV technology.

멀티 클라우드 렌더링을 위한 분산 파일 시스템 개발 (Development of a Distributed File System for Multi-Cloud Rendering)

  • 최근 렌더링을 위한 플랫폼으로 멀티 클라우드 환경이 주목받고 있다. 이는 렌더링의 연산량이 시간에 따라 변동 폭이 큰 반면 각 렌더링 작업은 독립적으로 수행될 수 있기 때문이다. 그러나, 멀티 클라우드 렌더링은 대용량의 렌더링 입력 데이터에 대한 일관성을 유지하면서 실시간으로 데이터를 전송해야 하는 어려운 점이 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 멀티 클라우드 렌더링을 위한 새로운 분산 파일 시스템을 개발하였다. 개발된 파일 시스템은 로컬 머신에 파일 서버를 두어 렌더링 입력 파일에 대한 버전을 관리하고, 클라우드에 캐쉬 관리자를 두어 파일의 버전을 고려한 분산 협력 캐슁을 수행한다. 렌더링 워크로드를 이용한 실측 실험을 통해 개발된 파일 시스템이 NFS 대비 745%의 I/O 처리율을 나타내는 것을 확인했으며, 업로드 방식과 비교할 때 평균 56%의 실행시간 개선이 있는 것으로 확인되었다.

인지무선 에드혹 네트워크를 위한 강화학습기반의 멀티채널 MAC 프로토콜 (Reinforcement Learning based Multi-Channel MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Ad-hoc Networks)

  • 인지무선 에드혹 네트워크 (CRAHN : Cognitive Radio Ad-Hoc Networks)는 무선 서비스의 증가에 따른 주파수 자원부족을 극복할 수 있는 네트워크 기술이다. CRANH에서 주 사용자에 대한 간섭을 회피하기 위해 유휴채널을 확인하는 채널센싱이 필요하며, 주 사용자 출현시 빠른 유휴 채널선택을 통해 핸드오버로 인한 시간지연을 최소화 해야한다. 본 연구에서는 강화학습을 이용하여 CRANH에서 부 사용자의 채널 센싱의 대상을 축소하고 유휴채널의 가능성이 높은 채널을 우선적으로 센싱하도록함으로써 전송효율을 개선하였다. 또한 주기적인 센싱을 수행하지 않고 데이터의 전송시점에 채널을 센싱함으로써 센싱시점과 데이터 전송시점간의 차이로 인한 주 사용자와의 충돌가능성을 최소화할 수 있는 멀티채널 매체접근제어(MAC: Medium Access Control) 프로토콜을 제안하고 시뮬레이션을 통해 그 성능을 분석하였다.

PCA-DEA 모델을 이용한 국내 주요항만의 효율성과 생산성 분석에 관한 연구 (Analysis of Efficiency and Productivity for Major Korean Seaports using PCA-DEA model)

  • 우리나라는 동북아지역에서 아시아 허브항만의 위상을 유지하기 위해 항만시스템의 업그레이드에 막대한 예산을 투입하고 있다. 그 결과로 우리나라 대표항만인 부산항은 세계 5위 수준의 컨테이너 물동량 처리 수준을 보이고 있다. 그러나 부산항을 제외한 다른 항만은 낮은 순위에 자리하고 있다. 이 연구는 자료포락분석(DEA) 모델과 Malmquist 생산성지수(MPI)를 이용하여 국내 주요 항만의 효율성과 생산성을 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 특히 변수의 수가 의사결정단위(DMU) 수를 초과할 경우 판별력이 약해지는 DEA모델을 보완하기 주성분분석(PCA, Principal Component Analysis)을 DEA모델에 결합한 PCA-DEA모델을 이용하였다. 그리고 MPI는 다년간의 항만의 생산성을 측정하기 위하여 적용하였다. 그 결과로 우리나라 주요항만의 효율성과 생산성 순위를 결정할 수 있었으며, 광양항과 울산항 2010년과 2018년 비교시 효율성 측면에서 상위권을 보였으며, 생산성 분석 결과에 있어서 대산항과 목포항이 다른 항만에 비해 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 이 연구결과는 항만별 경쟁력을 객관적으로 평가하고 전략을 마련하는데 활용될 수 있다.

Integrating Resilient Tier N+1 Networks with Distributed Non-Recursive Cloud Model for Cyber-Physical Applications

  • Cyber-physical systems (CPS) have been growing exponentially due to improved cloud-datacenter infrastructure-as-a-service (CDIaaS). Incremental expandability (scalability), Quality of Service (QoS) performance, and reliability are currently the automation focus on healthy Tier 4 CDIaaS. However, stable QoS is yet to be fully addressed in Cyber-physical data centers (CP-DCS). Also, balanced agility and flexibility for the application workloads need urgent attention. There is a need for a resilient and fault-tolerance scheme in terms of CPS routing service including Pod cluster reliability analytics that meets QoS requirements. Motivated by these concerns, our contributions are fourfold. First, a Distributed Non-Recursive Cloud Model (DNRCM) is proposed to support cyber-physical workloads for remote lab activities. Second, an efficient QoS stability model with Routh-Hurwitz criteria is established. Third, an evaluation of the CDIaaS DCN topology is validated for handling large-scale, traffic workloads. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) with Floodlight SDN controllers was adopted for the implementation of DNRCM with embedded rule-base in Open vSwitch engines. Fourth, QoS evaluation is carried out experimentally. Considering the non-recursive queuing delays with SDN isolation (logical), a lower queuing delay (19.65%) is observed. Without logical isolation, the average queuing delay is 80.34%. Without logical resource isolation, the fault tolerance yields 33.55%, while with logical isolation, it yields 66.44%. In terms of throughput, DNRCM, recursive BCube, and DCell offered 38.30%, 36.37%, and 25.53% respectively. Similarly, the DNRCM had an improved incremental scalability profile of 40.00%, while BCube and Recursive DCell had 33.33%, and 26.67% respectively. In terms of service availability, the DNRCM offered 52.10% compared with recursive BCube and DCell which yielded 34.72% and 13.18% respectively. The average delays obtained for DNRCM, recursive BCube, and DCell are 32.81%, 33.44%, and 33.75% respectively. Finally, workload utilization for DNRCM, recursive BCube, and DCell yielded 50.28%, 27.93%, and 21.79% respectively.

Relaying of 4G Signal over 5G Suitable for Disaster Management following 3GPP Release 18 Standard

  • Technologies for disaster management are highly sought areas for research and commercial deployment. Landslides, Flood, cyclones, earthquakes, forest fires and road/train accidents are some causes of disasters. Capturing video and accessing data in real time from the disaster site can help first responders make split second decisions which may save human lives and valuable resource destructions. In this context the communication technologies performing the task should have high bandwidth and low latency which only 5G can deliver. But unfortunately in India, deployment of the 5G mobile communication systems is yet to give a shape and again in remote areas unavailability of 4G signals is still severe. In this situation the authors have proposed, simulated and experimented a 4G-5G communication scheme where from the disaster site the signals will be transmitted by a 5G terminal to a nearby 4G-5G gateway installed in a mobile vehicle. The received 5G signal will be further relayed by the 4G-5G gateway to the fixed 4G base station for onward transmission towards the disaster management station for decision making, deployment and relief monitoring. The 4G-5G gateway acts as a relay and converter of 5G signal to 4G signal and vice versa. This relayed system can be further mounted on a vehicle mounted relay (VMR) as proposed by 3GPP in Release 18. The scheme is also in the same line of context with Verizon's, "Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response" (THOR) vehicle concept. The performance of the link is studied in different channel conditions, the throughput achieved is superb. The authors have implemented the above mentioned system towards smart campus networking and monitoring landslides activities which are common in their regions.

Transcriptome Analysis of Antrodia cinnamomea Mycelia from Different Wood Substrates

  • Antrodia cinnamomea, an edible and medicinal fungus with significant economic value and application prospects, is rich in terpenoids, benzenoids, lignans, polysaccharides, and benzoquinone, succinic and maleic derivatives. In this study, the transcriptome of A. cinnamomea cultured on the wood substrates of Cinnamomum glanduliferum (YZM), C. camphora (XZM), and C. kanehirae (NZM) was sequenced using the high-throughput sequencing technology Illumina HiSeq 2000, and the data were assembled by de novo strategy to obtain 78,729 Unigenes with an N50 of 4,463 bp. Compared with public databases, about 11,435, 6,947, and 5,994 Unigenes were annotated to the Non-Redundant (NR), Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG), respectively. The comprehensive analysis of the mycelium terpene biosynthesis-related genes in A. cinnamomea revealed that the expression of acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase (AACT), acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA), mevalonate pyrophosphate decarboxylase (MVD), and isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase (IDI) was significantly higher on NZM compared to the other two wood substrates. Similarly, the expression of geranylgeranyltransferase (GGT) was significantly higher on YZM compared to NZM and XZM, and the expression of farnesyl transferase (FTase) was significantly higher on XZM. Furthermore, the expressions of 2,3-oxidized squalene cyclase (OCS), squalene synthase (SQS), and squalene epoxidase (SE) were significantly higher on NZM. Overall, this study provides a potential approach to explore the molecular regulation mechanism of terpenoid biosynthesis in A. cinnamomea.
