Densification behavior of nanocrystalline titania powder was investigated under cold compaction. Experimental data were obtained under triaxial compression with various loading conditions. Lee and Kim proposed the Cap model by developing the parameters involved in the yield function of general Cap model and volumetric strain evolution under cold isostatic pressing. The parameters in the Drucker/Prager Cap model and the proposed model were obtained from experimental data under triaxial compression. Finite element results from the models were compared with experimental data for densification behavior of nanocystalline ceramic powder under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction. The proposed model agreed well with experimental data under cold compaction, but the Drucker/Prager Cap model underestimated at the low density range. Finite element results, also, show the relative density distribution of nanocystalline ceramic powder compacts is severe compared to conventional micron powder compacts with the same averaged relative density.

XML schema matching is the task of finding semantic correspondences between elements of two schemas. XML schema matching plays an important role in many application, such as schema integration, data integration, data warehousing, data transformation, peer-to-peer data management, semantic web etc. In this paper, we propose an XML element matching algorithm based on rules and structural properties. The proposed algorithm involves classifying elements as unique or non-unique elements according to the structural properties of XML documents and deciding on element matching in accordance with rules. We present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Severe element distortion problem is observed in finite element mesh while performing numerical simulations of high velocity steel projectiles penetration/perforation of concrete targets using finite element method (FEM). This problem of element distortion in Lagrangian formulation of FEM can be resolved by using element erosion methodology. Element erosion approach is applied in the finite element program by defining failure parameters as a condition for element elimination. In this study strain parameters for both compression and tension at failure are used as failure criteria. Since no direct method exists to determine these values, a calibration approach is used to establish suitable failure strain values while performing numerical simulations of ogive-nose steel projectile penetration/perforation into concrete target. A range of erosion parameters is suggested and adopted in concrete penetration/perforation tests to validate the suggested values. Good agreement between the numerical and field data is observed.
In the finite element modelling of long-span cable-stayed bridges, there are a lot of uncertainties brought about by the complex structural configuration, material behaviour, boundary conditions, structural connections, etc. In order to reduce the discrepancies between the theoretical finite element model and the actual static and dynamic behaviour, updating is indispensable after establishment of the finite element model to provide a reliable baseline version for further analysis. Traditional sensitivity-based updating methods cannot support updating based on static and dynamic measurement data at the same time. The finite element model is required in every optimization iteration which limits the efficiency greatly. A convenient but accurate Kriging surrogate model for updating of the finite element model of cable-stayed bridge is proposed. First, a simple cable-stayed bridge is used to verify the method and the updating results of Kriging model are compared with those using the response surface model. Results show that Kriging model has higher accuracy than the response surface model. Then the method is utilized to update the model of a long-span cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong. The natural frequencies are extracted using various methods from the ambient data collected by the Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System installed on the bridge. The maximum deflection records at two specific locations in the load test form the updating objective function. Finally, the fatigue lives of the structure at two cross sections are calculated with the finite element models before and after updating considering the mean stress effect. Results are compared with those calculated from the strain gauge data for verification.

The effects of friction between powder and a mandrel on densification behavior of metal powder were investigated under cold isostatic pressing. The elastoplastic constitutive equations based on the yield function of Shima and Oyane were implemented into finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate compaction responses of metal powders during cold isostatic pressing. The friction coefficients between powder and mandrels with different roughness were determined by comparing experimental data and finite element results. Density distributions in the powder compacts were also studied for different friction coefficients. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for pure iron powder under cold isostatic pressing.

The stage 1 compaction behavior of tool steel powder under die pressing was studied. The friction effects between the powder and the die wall under different die pressing modes were also investigated. The elastoplastic constitutive equations based on the yield functions by Fleck et al. and by Shima and Oyane were implemented into a finite element program to simulate die compaction processes. Finite element calculations were compared with experimental data for densification and density distribution of tool steel powder under single and double action die pressing. Finite element calculations using the yield function by Fleck et al. agreed better with experimental data than by Shima and Oyane.

Traumatic loading during car accidents or sports activities can lead to cervical spinal cord injury. Experiments in spinal cord injury research are mainly carried out on rabbit or rat. Finite element models that include the rat cervical spinal cord and adjacent soft tissues should be developed for efficient studies of mechanisms of spinal cord injury. Images of a rat were obtained from high resolution MRI scanner. Polygonal surfaces were extracted structure by structure from the MRI data using the ITK-SNAP volume segmentation software. These surfaces were converted to Non-uniform Rational B-spline surfaces by the INUS Rapidform rapid prototyping software. Rapidform was also used to generate a thin shell surface model for the dura mater which sheathes the spinal cord. Altair's Hypermesh pre-processor was used to generate finite element meshes for each structure. These processes in this study can be utilized in modeling of other biomedical tissues and can be one of examples for reverse engineering on biomechanics.
Finite element analysis(FEA) is the most popular numerical method to simulate plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure and can predict fatigue crack closure behavior. Finite element analysis under plane stress state using 4-node isoparametric elements is performed to investigate the detailed closure behavior of fatigue cracks and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The mesh of constant size elements on the crack surface can not correctly predict the opening level for fatigue crack as shown in the previous works. The crack opening behavior for the size mesh with a linear change shows almost flat stress level after a crack tip has passed by the monotonic plastic zone. The prediction of crack opening level presents a good agreement with published experimental data regardless of stress ratios, which are using the mesh of the elements that are in proportion to the reversed plastic zone size considering the opening stress intensity factors. Numerical interpolation results of finite element analysis can precisely predict the crack opening level. This method shows a good agreement with the experimental data regardless of the stress ratios and kinds of materials.
This paper summarizes a study for the modal analysis and model updating conducted using the monitoring data obtained from the Canton Tower of 610 m tall, which was established as an international benchmark problem by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Modal properties of the tower were successfully identified using frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification methods. Finite element model updating using the measurement data was further performed to reduce the modal property differences between the measurements and those of the finite element model. Over-fitting during the model updating was avoided by using an optimization scheme with a regularization term.

Nondestructive evaluation using surface waves needs an analytical solution for the reference value to compare with experimental data. Finite element analysis is very powerful tool to simulate the wave propagation, but has some defects. It is very expensive and high time-complexity for the required high resolution. For those reasons, it is hard to implement an optimization problem in the actual situation. The developed engine in this paper can substitute for the finite element analysis of surface waves propagation, and it accomplishes the fast analysis possible to be used in optimization. Including this artificial intelligence engine, most of soft computing algorithms can be applied on the special database. The database of surface waves propagation is easily constructed with the results of finite element analysis after reducing the dimensions of data. The principal wavelet-component analysis is an efficient method to simplify the transient wave signal into some representative peaks. At the end, artificial neural network based on the database make it possible to invent the artificial intelligence engine.
