Performance Evaluation of Karan Fries and Karan Swiss Cattle under Closed Breeding System

  • The 490 and 380 performance records of Karan Fries and Karan Swiss cows developed through crossbreeding followed by inter-se mating were evaluated for production, reproduction performance and disposal rate. Duration of study (1982-92) was grouped into five periods (1982-83; 1984-85; 1986-87; 1988-89; 1990-92) and each year was divided into four seasons (Winter: Dec.-Jan.; Spring: Feb.-March; Summer: April-June; Rainy: July-Sept.; Autumn: Oct.-Nov). Data were also classified according to sire and level of inbreeding. The least squares means of FLY (first lactation yield -305 days), FLL (first lactation length), FSP (first service period), FDP (first dry period), FCI (first calving interval ), MY/FLL (milk yield per day of first lactation length), MY/FCI (milk yield per day of first calving interval), EBV (expected breeding value) and EBE (expected breeding efficiency) were $3,173{\pm}82$ kg, $34611{\pm}$days, $143{\pm}11$ days, $75{\pm}6$ days, $423{\pm}11$ days, $10.6{\pm}0.2$ kg, $8.9{\pm}0.2$ kg, $3,380{\pm}26$ kg, and $88.2{\pm}1.3$% respectively in Karan Fries. Corresponding estimates in Karan Swiss cows were $2,616{\pm}82$ kg, $328{\pm}8$ days, $148{\pm}12$ days, $103{\pm}9$ days, $435{\pm}13$ days, $8.9{\pm}0.2$ kg, $7.2{\pm}0.3$ kg, $2,924{\pm38}$ kg and $86.0{\pm}3.8$% respectively. The effect of sire was significant on FLY, MY/FLL, MY/FCI and EBV in both the herd (p<0.01). The 10 and 15% sires showed superiority (FLY) over herd average of 11 and 7% in Karan Fries and 32 and 21% in Karan Swiss cattle respectively. Inbreeding has adversely and significantly (p<0.05) affected the FLY, MY/FLL, MY/FCI and survivability of Karan Fries females; FDP and disposal through culling of Karan Swiss heifers. The Karan Fries heifers with inbreeding above 12.5% performed 16% lower FLY to herd average. The effect of season of calving was significant on FLL, FSP and FCI (p<0.05) in Karan Fries. Summer calvers ($361{\pm}12$) were have higher lactation length and autumn calvers ($329{\pm}14$) had minimum. Period of calving significantly influenced the FSP, FCI, MY/FLL and MY/FCI in Karan Fries and FLY, MY/FLL and MY/FCI in Karan Swiss. Production efficiency traits in Karan Fries herd witnessed higher yield in the last two periods whereas, Karan Swiss heifers showed fluctuating performance. The findings suggested judicious use of available genetic variability, keeping of inbreeding under safer level and managemental interventions for the consistent improvement of both herds.

21세기 한반도 기후변화 전망: WRF를 이용한 RCP 4.5와 8.5 시나리오 기온과 강수 (Projection of 21st Century Climate over Korean Peninsula: Temperature and Precipitation Simulated by WRFV3.4 Based on RCP4.5 and 8.5 Scenarios)

  • Historical, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios from HadGEM2-AO are dynamically downscaled over the northeast East Asia with WRFV3.4. The horizontal resolution of the produced data is 12.5 km and the periods of integration are 1979~2010 for historical and 2019~2100 for both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. We analyze the time series, climatology, EOF and extreme climate in terms of 2 m-temperature and precipitation during 30-year for the Historical (1981~2010) and RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 (2071~2100) scenarios. According to the result, the temperature of the northeast Asia centered at the Korean Peninsula increase 2.9 and $4.6^{\circ}C$ in the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively, by the end of the 21st century. The temperature increases with latitude and the increase is larger in winter rather than in summer. The annual mean precipitation is expected to increase by about $0.3mm\;day^{-1}$ in RCP4.5 scenario and $0.5mm\;day^{-1}$ in RCP8.5 scenario. The EOF analysis is also performed for both temperature and precipitation. For temperature, the EOF $1^{st}$ modes of all scenarios in summer and winter show that temperature increase with latitude. The $2^{nd}$ mode of EOF of each scenario shows the natural variability, exclusive of the global warming. The summer precipitation over the Korean Peninsula projected increases in EOF $1^{st}$ modes of all scenarios. For extreme climate, the increment of the number of days with daily maximum temperature above $30^{\circ}C$ per year ($DAY_{TX30}$) is 25.3 and 49.7 days in RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 respectively over the Korean Peninsula. The number of days with daily precipitation above $20mm\;day^{-1}$ per year ($DAY_{PR20}$) also increases 3.1 and 3.5 days in RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 respectively.

일회성 호흡훈련 피드백이 중년여성의 HRV-자율신경시스템 변화에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Acute Respiratory Training Feedback upon a Change on HRV-Autonomic Nervous System in Middle-aged Women)

  • 본 연구는 일회성 호흡훈련 피드백이 중년여성의 HRV-자율신경시스템 변화에 미치는 영향을 분석고자 하였다. 연구대상자는 중년여성(40-60세) 총 24명을 호흡군 12명, 통제군 12명으로 무선할당하여 일회성 호흡 훈련을 실시하였다. 호흡군의 피드백 훈련은 총 15분 동안 실시되었으며, 10분 간 전문가 지도에 따른 호흡 자각 훈련 후 5분 간 자율호흡 훈련을 실시하였다. 자료의 분석은 SPSS WIN 20.0으로 반복측정 변량분석(Repeated Measures ANOVA)을 실시하였으며, 이를 통해 얻어진 결론은 다음과 같다. 중년여성들은 일회성 호흡 훈련 후 SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF가 유의하게 높아졌으며, 호흡군이 통제군보다 SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF이 유의하게 높아진 것으로 나타났고, Mean HR과 LF/HF는 집단과 시기의 주효과, 집단과 시기의 상호작용효과 모두 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 이상의 결과로 일회성 호흡훈련 피드백은 중년여성들의 SDNN, RMSSD, 교감활성, 부교감활성에 효과적이며, 이러한 호흡 훈련 프로그램은 자율신경계 균형 능력을 향상시켜 중년여성들의 스트레스 완화 및 자율신경실조증을 회복할 수 있는 운동중재의 효용 가치를 기대할 수 있다고 사료된다.

Optimization of Reference Genes for Normalization of the Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction in Tissue Samples of Gastric Cancer

  • For an exact comparison of mRNA transcription in different samples or tissues with real time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), it is crucial to select a suitable internal reference gene. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and beta-actin (ACTB) have been frequently considered as house-keeping genes to normalize for changes in specific gene expression. However, it has been reported that these genes are unsuitable references in some cases, because their transcription is significantly variable under particular experimental conditions and among tissues. The present study was aimed to investigate which reference genes are most suitable for the study of gastric cancer tissues using qRT-PCR. 50 pairs of gastric cancer and corresponding peritumoral tissues were obtained from patients with gastric cancer. Absolute qRT-PCR was employed to detect the expression of GAPDH, ACTB, RPII and 18sRNA in the gastric cancer samples. Comparing gastric cancer with corresponding peritumoral tissues, GAPDH, ACTB and RPII were obviously upregulated 6.49, 5.0 and 3.68 fold, respectively. Yet 18sRNA had no obvious expression change in gastric cancer tissues and the corresponding peritumoral tissues. The expression of GAPDH, ${\beta}$-actin, RPII and 18sRNA showed no obvious changes in normal gastric epithelial cells compared with gastric cancer cell lines. The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a widely used clinical tumor marker, was used as a validation gene. Only when 18sRNA was used as the normalizing gene was CEA obviously elevated in gastric cancer tissues compared with peritumoral tissues. Our data show that 18sRNA is stably expressed in gastric cancer samples and corresponding peritumoral tissues. These observations confirm that there is no universal reference gene and underline the importance of specific optimization of potential reference genes for any experimental condition.

위성기반 토양수분 자료의 한반도 지역 적용성 평가: AMSR2 LPRM 알고리즘과 지점관측 자료를 이용하여 (Evaluation of satellite-based soil moisture retrieval over the korean peninsula : using AMSR2 LPRM algorithm and ground measurement data)

  • 본 연구에서는 GCOM-W1 위성에 탑재된 Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) 센서의 토양수분 자료를 Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) 알고리즘을 통해 전처리하여 2014년도 한반도 지점관측 자료와의 비교 분석을 수행, 위성 토양수분 자료의 적합성을 평가하였다. 통계 분석 결과 AMSR2 X-band의 토양수분 자료는 38개의 지점관측 자료와 비교해 0.03의 평균 bias, 0.16의 평균 RMSE의 낮은 오차 수준을 보였으며, 최대상관계수는 0.67로 나타났다. 또한 AMSR2 센서의 ascending, descending 시간대별 위성 토양수분자료 분석과 X, C1, C2-band의 주파수 영역별 위성 토양수분 자료 분석 결과, ascending overpass time 시간대와, X-band 주파수의 토양수분자료가 지점 관측 자료와 더 좋은 상관관계를 보였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과는 한반도에서 최근 문제가 되고 있는 가뭄을 비롯한 각종 재해 분석 시 토양수분의 공간적 분포를 연구하는데 활용 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

안동댐 유역 기상인자의 시공간분포 추정 (Estimating Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Climate Factors in Andong Dam Basin)

  • 본 연구는 안동댐 유역을 대상으로 수문기상 정보의 조밀한 시공간분포를 추정하여 수문기상에서 나타나는 시계열적 공간분포 특성을 규명하고자 한다. 국립기상과학원에서 설치 운영하고 있는 낙동강 상류 안동댐 유역의 수문 기상 관측소 7곳의 기상정보와 인근 두 곳의 종관기상관측소(ASOS) 정보를 활용하여 분석을 실시하였으며, 공간적 자기상관성에 기반한 Semi-Variogram을 추정하여 시공간분포를 확인하였다. 유역에서 변이성을 관찰할 수 있는 기상요소인 온도와 습도를 시간과 각 월에 따라 분석하였다. 계절에 관계없이 온도의 경우 14시, 습도의 경우 10시에 가장 균일한 공간분포를 나타내고, 18시에 온도와 습도 모두 가장 불균일성이 높게 확인되었다. 월별 공간 분포에서는 온도의 경우 1월에 가장 불균일하였고, 9월에 가장 균일한 것으로 확인되었으며, 습도의 경우 5월에 가장 불균일하고, 1월에 가장 균일한 것으로 나타났다. 수문기상에서는 일반 산림에서와 달리 계절적 공간분포특성이 적게 나타나며, 온도와 습도가 각각의 특성을 보이는 차이가 있었다.

히말라야산맥의 만년설 경년변화 연구 (Inter-Annual Variability of Ice Cap in Himalaya)

  • 온난화는 오늘날 발생하는 다양한 기상재해와 이변의 원인으로 전 세계적으로 중요한 문제점 중에 하나이다. 눈과 빙하는 지구온난화의 영향을 가장 쉽게 보여주는 예이며, 이것들은 높은 반사도 특성으로 지구 냉각에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)센서의 자료를 이용하여 히말라야 산맥내의 만년설 모니터링을 수행하였다. 만년설 감시를 위해서 NDSI(Normalized Differenced Snow Index)를 사용하였으며, NDSI는 위성 영상내에 눈을 감지하기 위해 가시와 단파적외 영역에서 눈의 반사도 특성 차이를 이용한 밴드비율이다. 본 연구에서는 2001년, 2003년, 2006년, 2007년의 9월부터 12월까지의 NDSI를 산출하여 만년설을 감시하였으며, 막연하게 알고 있던 고산지대 만년설에 대한 온난화의 영향을 정량적으로 검증하였다. 검증 결과 2007년이 비해 2001년에 잔설지역이 9월 $71,481km^2$, 10월 $92,760km^2$, 11월 $333,916km^2$ 각각 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

국내 반려견의 품종에 따른 혈구 및 생화학 수치 비교 연구 (Comparison of hematological and serum biochemical parameters among small breed dogs)

  • Hematological and serum biochemical analyses are routinely used to screen dogs for disease and monitor their clinical progression. These values in dogs may be affected by internal factors, such as breed and age, and external factors like environment, diet, and lifestyle. Apparently, subclinical breed-related variations in hematologic and serum biochemical results have been characterized for Bernese Mountain dogs, Alaskan Malamutes, English Setters, and Golden Retrievers. It is possible that some breed-related differences in clinical pathology analyses may reflect evidence of underlying disease and impact clinical decision plan. In this study, we estimated hematologic and serum biochemical parameters in small breed dogs and compared among four different breed dogs. Blood samples were collected from 38 domestic dogs that were 10 Beagles, 9 Malteses, 10 Poodles, and 9 Miniature Schnauzers. In terms of RBC count, Beagle ($7.2{\pm}0.24{\times}10^3cells/{\mu}L$) showed significantly (P<0.05) higher count than other breeds (Maltese, $6.51{\pm}0.25{\times}10^3cells/{\mu}L$; Poodle, $6.35{\pm}0.24{\times}10^3cells/{\mu}L$; and Miniature Schnauzer, $6.35{\pm}0.25{\times}10^3cells/{\mu}L$). For MCV, Miniature Schnauzer ($67.05{\pm}0.84fl$) results were significantly (P<0.05) higher than Beagle with $64.33{\pm}0.8fl$. For cholesterol value, Beagle ($163.3{\pm}9.15mg/dl$) had significantly (P<0.05) higher values than Miniature Schnauzer with $119.12{\pm}9.64mg/dl$. There was no statistically difference among breeds in terms of enzyme markers of liver diseases. In conclusion, data obtained from this study may be valuable as breed-related variability for interpretation of the results in hematologic and serum biochemical analysis among four small breed dogs.

하절기의 집중강우가 남한강 상류수계 수질에 미치는 영향 (The Impact of Monsoon Rainfall on the Water Quality in the Upstream Watershed of Southern Han River)

  • 하절기 집중 강우가 남한강 상류수계 수질에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 2008~2009년 4차례 현장조사를 시행하였고 1998~2007년까지 10년간 측정된 환경부 수질자료를 분석하였다. 남한강 상류수계 내에서의 전기전도도는 하절기 강우에 의해 희석되는 효과로 집중 강우 시기에 농도가 급격히 감소하고, 질소도 집중 강우기에 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 총인, 생물학적 산소요구량과 화학적 산소요구량 등은 8월에 최대가 되는 등 대부분의 이화학적 특성이 7~8월에 집중되는 하절기 몬순강우에 의해 조절되는 것으로 사료된다. 강우와 총인, 화학적 산소요구량, 총부유물의 상관지수는 0.40 이상 (p<0.01, n=120)의 상관성을 보였으며, 용존산소는 역의 상관성 (r=-0.542, p<0.01)을 보여 강우가 수질의 이화학적 변이에 중요한 요소임을 확인하였다. 본 연구 지역의 하절기 집중 강우는 비점오염원으로부터 총인 및 총부유물 농도를 증가시키는 것으로 판단되며 상류지역에 위치한 고랭지 밭 및 축산농가 등에서 배출되는 수질 오염물질과 도심 지역의 오염부하 등에 의한 하천으로의 유입을 최소화하고 오염부하 저감을 통한 효율적인 수질관리가 요구된다.

BIOLOGICALLY-BASED DOSE-RESPONSE MODEL FOR NEUROTOXICITY RISK ASSESSMENT

  • The regulation of neurotoxicants has usually been based upon setting reference doses by dividing a no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) by uncertainty factors that theoretically account for interspecies and intraspecies extraploation of experimental results in animals to humans. Recently, we have proposed a four-step alternative procedure which provides quantitative estimates of risk as a function of dose. The first step is to establish a mathematical relationship between a biological effect or biomarker and the dose of chemical administered. The second step is to determine the distribution (variability) of individual measurements of biological effects or their biomarkers about the dose response curve. The third step is to define an adverse or abnormal level of a biological effect or biomarker in an untreated population. The fourth and final step is to combine the information from the first three steps to estimate the risk (proportion of individuals exceeding on adverse or abnormal level of a biological effect or biomarker) as a function of dose. The primary purpose of this report is to enhance the certainty of the first step of this procedure by improving our understanding of the relationship between a biomarker and dose of administered chemical. Several factors which need to be considered include: 1) the pharmacokinetics of the parent chemical, 2) the target tissue concentrations of the parent chemical or its bioactivated proximate toxicant, 3) the uptake kinetics of the parent chemical or metabolite into the target cell(s) and/or membrane interactions, and 4) the interaction of the chemical or metabolite with presumed receptor site(s). Because these theoretical factors each contain a saturable step due to definitive amounts of required enzyme, reuptake or receptor site(s), a nonlinear, saturable dose-response curve would be predicted. In order to exemplify this process, effects of the neurotoxicant, methlenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), were reviewed and analyzed. Our results and those of others indicate that: 1) peak concentrations of MDMA and metabolites are ochieved in rat brain by 30 min and are negligible by 24 hr, 2) a metabolite of MDMA is probably responsible for its neurotoxic effects, and 3) pretreatment with monoamine uptake blockers prevents MDMA neurotoxicity. When data generated from rats administerde MDMA were plotted as bilolgical effect (decreases in hippocampal serotonin concentrations) versus dose, a saturation curve best described the observed relationship. These results support the hypothesis that at least one saturable step is involved in MDMA neurotoxicity. We conclude that the mathematical relationship between biological effect and dose of MDMA, the first step of our quantitative neurotoxicity risk assessment procedure, should reflect this biological model information generated from the whole of the dose-response curve.
