Purpose: Aging society was realized after persons over 65 was rated above 7% in 2000. It is inevitable fact that society gets older. Few study about facial bone fracture in elderly was reported until now. This study provides a retrospective statistical analysis of facial bone fracture and reports of some demographical information from medical records. Methods: From January 2000 to December 2005, 123 cases of facial bone fracture in above 55 year-old persons were reviewed and analysed. Statistic data was related to distribution, age, sex, causes, occupations, occurrence, time, incidence of facial bone fracture, treatment and it's complications. Results: Facial bone fractures in elderly tend to increase and rated to 4.7%. Facial bone fractures in elderly were most frequently occurred in farmers, cultivator accidents and zygoma fractures. A few minor complications were checked, but easily improved. Conclusion: Facial bone fractures in elderly have small proportion of the whole facial bone fractures, but gradually have been increased. This study was observed trends in changes of facial bone fracture in elderly for 5 years and expected to provide statistical index to prevent facial bone fracture in elderly.
Bone mass accretion during puberty appears to be critical in the development of peak bone mass. Although bone density of females in Korea has been studied, only a few studies have related bone mass with anthropometric patterns or puberty in the pubescent girls. This study was conducted as part of a study of major determinants of bone development during puberty. Subjects were aged 14∼16 yr(mean 14.97), and had no history of disorders or dedication use likely to influence bone or calcium metabolism. Bone mineral density and content were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry using a Lunar DPX+Scanner (Lunar Madison, WI). Also, total body fat, and total lean body mass were assessed using a Lunar DPX dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer, Pubertal status was assessed according to the Marshall and Tanner guidelines. Serum levels of osteocalcin was measured by RIA using a commercial kit assay. Skinfold measurements were taken with a skinfold caliper(Lange Caliper, USA). Data were analyzed using the regression and GLM procedure of the statistical package SAS. The results indicated that the observed means for lumbar spine BMD and femoral BMD correspond to approximately 91% and 96% of the means for young adult females, respec tively. All subjects were menarchal, with the majority being in the middle to end stages of pubertal development. Total body BMD was positively related to fat mass(P<0.001), lean body mass and time since menarche, and negatively related to urine pyridinoline, serum alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin. The data indicate that girls who reported lower age for menarche had significantly higher bone densities than girls who reported higher age for menarche. Attaining peak skeletal bone mass during puberty may reduce the incidence of osteoporosis in later life. this finding suggests that early menarche may augment peak bone mass, influencing the extent of bone loss later in adulthood. The results suggest that good nutrition in childhood appears to be needed not for growth and development, but possibly also to assure an optimal peak of bone mass and thus greater latitude for the maintenance or skeletal integrity in the face of bone losses. Troeps skinfold thickness was a better predictor of total BMD and total BMC than was any other skinfold thickness. The study did not find a relationship between total BMD and body fat %, but total fat was significantly positively related to total BMD(r=0.49) and total BMC(r=0.60). It supports earlier report that there was a significant correlation between TBMD and body weight. Conclusively, total fat, lean body mass and pubertal development could influence BMD in pubescent girls. Clearly, longitudinal studies are required to assess the effect of puberty on peak bone mass, and to define further the potential determinants of peak bone mass.
Abnormal intraosseous flow and pressure in trabecular bone could cause various pathological conditions such as osteonecrosis and osteoarthritis. Characteristics of intraosseous fluid flow and pressure generation in porous trabecular bone can be significantly affected by the permeability. Factors which determine the permeability could be the porosity and apparent density of trabecular bone. However, there is little data on the permeability and the relationship among the permeability. porosity, and apparent density of trabecular bone. In this study. the permeability. porosity, and apparent density of human lumbar vertebral trabecular bone were experimentally measured. Also, a power relationship among the permeability, porosity, and apparent density was investigated to understand effects of the porosity and apparent density variations on the permeability of trabecular bone based on Kozeny-Carman equation. A near linear relationship between intraosseous fluid flow and time indicated that the fluid phase flowed through the pores in trabecular bone is governed by the permeability. The permeability of trybecular bone was found to have a significant power relationship with the porosity and apparent density (r: 0.84 and $\textit{p}$< 0.0005). The power relationship could be useful to determine the permeability of trybecular bone after measuring the apparent density and porosity.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the factors affecting the bone density and the relationship between bone density and remaining teeth by using data from 2007 to 2009 of the 4th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). Methods : The subjects were 1,829 postmenopausal women over 50 years old from the data of the 4th KNHANES. Results : The bone density had the significant difference in 'age' and 'level of education' and remaining teeth had the significant difference in age, monthly income and level of education. The bone mineral density and remaining teeth had the significantly different from subjective general health, smoking, drinking, physical activity. The oral health behaviors and remaining teeth had the significantly associated in subjective oral health status, frequency of tooth brushing, use of auxiliary oral hygiene product, and recent oral examination. Conclusions : The number of remaining teeth is below 9.27 compared with the normal group.

To examine the bone-protective effects of Puerariae Radix (PR) in an estrogen-deficient animal model, we treated ovariectomized rats with PR at a dose of 10.0 mg/kg 3 times a week for 16 weeks. Our results showed that PR increased mineral content and density of the trabecular bone at the neck of the left femur. Moreover, biochemical data indicated that PR had a positive effect on bone turnover. No endometrial hyperplasia was detected in the PR group. The present data suggest that PR should be considered for use in the treatment of bone loss in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
The author studied the vertical height of tooth crown and the amounts of alveolar bone resorption with age. All 84 subjects(44 male, 40female) who visited Dental hospital of Wonkwang University with no history of sever periodontal disease and no experience of periodontal surgery. 84 subject were divided into 3 groups by age, that is, group I(28-32yrs), group II(38-42yrs), and group III(48-52yrs). Informal radiogram with bite wing film(horizontal angulation : $0^{\circ}$, vertical angulation : $+5^{\circ}~+10^{\circ}$) were taken on premolar and molar area. The distances from cusp tip to cementoenamel junction (vertical height of tooth crown) and from cementoenamel junction alveolar crest(amount of alveolar bone resorption) were measured, and then recorded data from 946 teeth were statistically analysed. This study was undertaken to obtain the data for age estimation by the changes of tooth crown height and alveolar bone resorption in the point of forensic odontology. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The average crown height of mandibular right 1st. molar was 7.1mm in group I, 6.7mm in group II, and 6.6mm group III, and the average amount of alveolar bone resorption on mandibular right 1st. molar were 1.8mm in group I, 2.5mm in group II, and 3.0mm in group III. Ratio of tooth crown height to amount of alveolar bone resorption was 4.0:1 in groupI, 2.7:1 in group II, and 2.2:1 in group III, the ratio was decreased with age. 2. In comparison with upper teeth and lower teeth in ipsilateral side, the average value of tooth crown height and amount of alveolar bone resorption were slightly higher in upper arch than those in lower arch, but there was not a statistically significant difference. 3. The ratio of height of tooth crown to amount of alveolar bone resorption was decreased with age, and which depended mainly upon the change of amount of alveolar bone resorption rather than the change of tooth crown height.
Many authors issued the feature-preserving averaging technique according to positioning and scaling process using landmarks, which represent the geometric characteristics of three dimensional surface models. Such a technique should be done by manual procedure, choosing and marking the landmarks on each bone surface before averaging process. In this study, we produced another averaging technique without having to use such manual procedure, and made averaging models from three dimensional surface data that were reconstructed from computerized tomography images of Digital Korean Project. The bone models were subjected to orthogonal coordinator system. These models were transformed to coincide mass center and to align principal axis. Then, bone models were scaled according to average length data of sample bone models on all axis(x, y, z). After establishing voxellar hexahedron space which contain all sample bone models, we counted the number of overlapping for each voxel. We generated the three dimensional average surface by displaying the yokels that have more overlapping number than boundary number. The boundary number was decided when the average volume of each bone equal to the volume of bone that would be averaged. Using this technique, we can make a feature-preserving averaging volume of bones.

Background and Objectives: The present study aimed to compare thresholds of direct bone-conduction (BC direct) with those of behaviorally measured BC pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and objectively measured BC auditory brainstem response (ABR) to confirm the clinical feasibility of their relationships. Subjects and Methods: Young adults with normal hearing participated in the study to determine the thresholds from three measurements at four testing frequencies. In the BC direct, the vibrator of a bone-anchored hearing aid softband was placed on the right mastoid of each subject. In both PTA and ABR, a B71 bone oscillator was placed on the subject's right mastoid. While the subject's thresholds of BC direct and BC PTA were determined with a clinically routine 5-dB step procedure, BC ABR was conducted to determine the individual's hearing sensitivity by a peak V of the waveform using tone-burst and click stimuli. Results: The BC direct showed a different pattern between low and high frequencies. Precisely, its thresholds were 13.25 and 12.25 dB HL at 0.5 and 1 kHz, respectively, but 19 and 19.75 dB HL at 2 and 4 kHz, respectively. A significant positive correlation existed between BC direct and PTA at 1 kHz, which was also correlated with ABR. Conclusions: Based on the current data, the thresholds of BC direct were similar to BC PTA at low frequencies and BC ABR at high frequencies. The thresholds of BC direct might be predictable at approximately 5 dB higher (or lower) than that in PTA, although a large data set is required for standardization.

Purpose: This study was to identify the influencing factors of the compliance level to a therapeutic regimen after a bone mineral densitometry test. Method: The sample for the study was 95 people who took the bone mineral densitometry test from March, 2002 to July, 2002. Data was collected by mail using aself reporting questionnaire on the selected variables such as the compliance level, self efficacy, health locus of control, susceptibility, severity, usefulness, barrier, and self esteem. Results: The average compliance level was 63.93. Through multiple regression, three independent variables including chance health locus of control on personality, the result of bone mineral density and self-efficacy were entered in the model as the significant determinants of the compliance level after a bone mineral densitometry test. The coefficients of determination of each variable were 10.9%, 8.3% and 8.1% respectively. Conclusion: The identification of the determinants of the compliance level to the therapeutic regimen after bone mineral densitometry is expected to contribute to the development of an intervention program to improve the compliance level to the therapeutic regimen in osteoporosis patients.
