Microbial Diversity Information Facility: Bacteriology Insight Orienting System (BIOS)

  • Global Biodiversity is common interest of humans for better health and sustainable development of the society. To provide access and analysis on microbial diversity information, Bacteriology Insight Orienting System (BIOS) has been developed. BIOS contains 6402 species and subspecies names of bacteria and archaea, 2606 names of cyanobacteria by March 2000. BIOS of which web based analytical tool provides windows to compare the results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequence and the results of cluster analysis on proteome profiling. The sequence data and 2 dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis data were accumulated in BIOS database content for cyanobacteria reclassification and taxonomy. Financial Analysis of Thai Banks: Effectiveness of Augmented Reality Visualization

  • The objective of the study is to examine the acceptance and usability of Augmented Reality (AR) visuals developed for industry analysis of Thai Banks and whether these visuals can outperform the table of numbers in representing financial accounting data. Convenient samples were used and the data were collected with self-assessed questionnaires from 109 users with minimum prior experiences with financial analyses. The results from descriptive statistics indicates that despite having over 80% of respondents with little prior experience in analyzing financial performance of banking industry, the majority of them were able to correctly make prediction (96.4%), identify trend (82.6%) and compare banks' performance (70.6%). Their attitudes and perception towards Bank-AR visuals were above average. Although the overall usability score is average (53%), the respondents rated the Bank-AR visuals to be highly useful and had high intention to use them in the future.

  • Increasing concern for the environment in Korea has led to the demand that major policies and large-scale development projects be subjected to detailed impact assessment. This paper reports on the state of data related to the prediction of the environmental impact (EIA) to emphasize the importance of data quality. Environmental impact statements (EIS) consulted with the Ministry of Environment of Korea were analyzed from 1981 through 1992. Many of assessors used existing data and collected supplementary data from field survey. Most of the results of EIA are presented directly or summarized on maps and as graphics. For the national purpose, large source of quality-controlled data such as atmospheric data have been developed, However, there are the deficiency in data to analyze the impact of human activity, and data gaps and incompatibilities among systems. Consequently, the development of data bank systems including computer database and remotely-sensed satellite data is required to improve the quality of data which are relevant to EIA. The data bank system should be organized meaningfully in minimum time with a least cost, and measurement standards must be made explicit. Geographical information systems (GIS) are applicable to the graphic presentation or to the impact prediction model.

Epidemiology and Outcomes of Traumatic Brain Injury in Elderly Population : A Multicenter Analysis Using Korean Neuro-Trauma Data Bank System 2010-2014

  • Objective : Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs in people of all age groups, the elderly population is at a particular risk. The proportion of elderly population in the society is markedly increasing and Korea is one of the most rapidly aging societies. Here, we analyzed the data from 904 patients older over 65 years who were registered in the Korean Neuro-Trauma Data Bank System (KNTDBS). Methods : The Korean Society of Neurotraumatology recorded data from 20 institutions between September 2010 and March 2014. This retrospective study examined the clinical epidemiology, sex difference, outcome epidemiology, sociodemographic variables, and outcomes in the geriatric population related to TBI based on data from the KNTDBS. Results : The study included 540 men and 364 women. The age distributions in the male and female groups were statistically significantly different. The most common cause of trauma was a fall and diagnosis was acute subdural hematoma. The incidence was the highest in men aged 80-84 years and in women aged 75-79 years. The most common time of arrival to hospital after TBI was within 1 hour and 119 rescue team provided first aid earliest to patients with TBI. The mortality rate stratified according to the cause of trauma was significantly different, with mortality rates of 3.77% in fall and 11.65% in traffic accident. The mortality rates according the severity of brain injury, Glasgow Coma Scale score, and treatment were statistically significant. Conclusion : To our knowledge, this study is the first to focus on elderly patients with TBI in Korea and particularly investigate mortality and characteristics related to TBI-related death based on data from the KNTDBS. Although the study has some limitations, our results may be used to obtain useful information to study targeted prevention and more effective treatment options for older TBI patients and establish novel treatment guidelines and health polish for the geriatric population.

  • Previous research on data extraction and integration for data warehousing has concentrated mainly on the relational DBMS or partly on the object-oriented DBMS. Mostly, it describes issues related with the change data (deltas) capture and the incremental update by using the triggering technique of active database systems. But, little attention has been paid to data extraction approaches from other types of source systems like hierarchical DBMS, etc. and from source systems without triggering capability. This paper argues, from the practical point of view, that we need to consider not only the types of information sources and capabilities of ETT tools but also other factors of source systems such as operational characteristics (i.e., whether they support DBMS log, user log or no log, timestamp), and DBMS characteristics (i.e., whether they have the triggering capability or not, etc), in order to find out appropriate data extraction techniques that could be applied to different source systems. Having applied several different data extraction techniques (e.g., DBMS log, user log, triggering, timestamp-based extraction, file comparison) to S bank's source systems (e.g., IMS, DB2, ORACLE, and SAM file), we discovered that data extraction techniques available in a commercial ETT tool do not completely support data extraction from the DBMS log of IMS system. For such IMS systems, a new date extraction technique is proposed which first creates Index database and then updates the data warehouse using the Index database. We illustrates this technique using an example application.

  • As digital transformation accelerates, the proportion of non-face-to-face services in financial services is also increasing. Recently, user experience has emerged to secure competitiveness in mobile services, and analysis techniques to improve user experience have emerged. User review data, one of the data used for quantitative evaluation, contains a lot of unnecessary information, which is time-consuming to derive improvement directions. Therefore, this study aims to develop a UX analysis system based on the hierarchy of UX needs by using a cosine similarity algorithm and analyze user review data of Kookmin Bank, Woori Bank, Kakao Bank, and Toss for verification. This study proved that the developed UX analysis system is a system that can effectively analyze UX through the analysis of user review data. The system of this study is expected to be easily used to identify improvement plans for the hierarchy of UX needs in an agile organization that needs to quickly reflect customer feedback.

  • This study aims to find out the legalization status of a central Shariah regulatory authority for the Islamic banks in Bangladesh. In this regard, the central bank can legalize the existing Centralized Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh (CSBIB) or form a new Centralized Shariah Supervisory Board (CSBB) under the management of the central bank in Bangladesh. Based on the data obtained by the semi-structured interviews, this research finds diversified opinions regarding the legalization of CSBIB or the formation of a new CSBB. Initially, without the law, it would be difficult to form CSSB under the central bank as the Islamic banks and banking environment are still not ready. In addition, it is difficult to legalize the existing CSBIB because the format of its structure is different from the CSSB structure in Malaysia and Bahrain. The existing banking company act authorizes the central bank to provide circulars regarding banking issues and it will be considered as an act. The central bank can legalize the existing CSBIB or form a new CSSB through a circular which will be helpful to monitor the overall Shariah issues. The presence of a CSSB will fulfill the expectations of all Islamic banks, and the concerned stakeholders.

Factors Affecting Intentions to Use Internet-Only Bank in South Korea: Implications of Service Convenience and Social Influence (인터넷전문은행의 이용의도에 미치는 영향 요인: 편리성과 사회적 영향의 함의)

  • Internet-only bank is one of the promising areas of Fintech industry. Kbank and Kakaobank launched services since 2017 in Korea. Experts estimated the younger generation including undergraduate students as target customers in the initial stage of the Internet-only bank in Korea. Thus, it is necessary to investigate factors influencing intention to use the Internet-only bank. Data were collected from undergraduate students studying in Seoul, Pusan, and Gyeongbuk province. The empirical study showed the evidence that four factors such as convenience, social influence, perceived privacy, and unverified risk had a significant influence on intention to use the Internet-only bank. However, economic benefit has no significantly influence on the intention. The present study focused on the influence of convenience and social influence and discussed the issues regarding convenience and social influence in more detail.

  • Tree algorithms have been widely developed for regression problems. One of the good features of a regression tree is the flexibility of fitting because it can correctly capture the nonlinearity of data well. Especially, data with sudden structural breaks such as the price of oil and exchange rates could be fitted well with a simple mixture of a few piecewise linear regression models. Now that split points are determined by chi-squared statistics related with residuals from fitting piecewise linear models and the split variable is chosen by an objective criterion, we can get a quite reasonable fitting result which goes in line with the visual interpretation of data. The piecewise linear regression by a regression tree can be used as a good fitting method, and can be applied to a dataset with much fluctuation.

  • In this paper, we proposed new speech feature parameter through parts-based feature extraction of speech spectrum using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF). NMF can effectively reduce dimension for multi-dimensional data through matrix factorization under the non-negativity constraints, and dimensionally reduced data should be presented parts-based features of input data. For speech feature extraction, we applied Mel-scaled filter bank outputs to inputs of NMF, than used outputs of NMF for inputs of speech recognizer. From recognition experiment result, we could confirm that proposed feature parameter is superior in recognition performance than mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) that is used generally.
