  • Based on a weakly non-Gaussian theory the occurrence probability of freak waves is formulated in terms of the number of waves in a time series and the surface elevation kurtosis. Finite kurtosis gives rise to a significant enhancement of freak wave generation in comparison with the linear narrow banded wave theory. For fixed number of waves, the estimated amplification ratio of freak wave occurrence due to the deviation from the Gaussian theory is 50% - 300%. The results of the theory are compared with laboratory and field data.

  • A micro-computer based system has been designed to evaluate the performance of infant incubators. The measurement system used a hybrid of analog electronics for amplification, integration and switches and micro-computer for data storage, data display, and control of relay. This approach has been applied to measure the warm-up time, temperature stability, temperature change due to open/close of door and portholes, and temperature distribution on the mattress. The micro-computer provides on-line access of multi-point temperature data.

Processing parallel-disk viscometry data in the presence of wall slip

  • This paper describes a two-step Tikhonov regularization procedure for converting the steady shear data generated by parallel-disk viscometers, in the presence of wall slip, into a shear stress-shear rate function and a wall shear stress-slip velocity functions. If the material under test has a yield stress or a critical wall shear stress below which no slip is observed the method will also provide an estimate of these stresses. Amplification of measurement noise is kept under control by the introduction of two separate regularization parameters and Generalized Cross Validation is used to guide the selection of these parameters. The performance of this procedure is demonstrated by applying it to the parallel disk data of an oil-in-water emulsion, of a foam and of a mayonnaise.

  • A micro- computer system has been designed to evaluate the performance of commercial infant incubator and to develope the temperature controller of new incubator. The measure- ment system used a hybrid of analog electronics for amplification, integration, and switches and micro-computer for data storage, data display, and control of relay. This approach has been applied to measure the warm-up time, temperature stability, open/close door and port- holes, and temperature distribution on the mattress. The micro-computer provides on-line ac cess of multi-point temperature data, simplifies the analog part of the circuit and gives the flexibility.

  • Noise reduction and a simplification of a precision measurement system has been performed by changing analog output mode of a load cell into digital output mode. Usually, analog output signal of a few $\mu V$ from a load cell are amplified by amp and acquired by A/D converter. If the distance from a load cell to a DAS(Data Acquisition System) increases, more noise signals are mixed. So, a microprocessor has been integrated into a load cell so that the amplification and A/D conversion of output signals could be done in close proximity to the lode cell for the reduction in mixing of noise. Obtained data from the load cell like this manner are transferred to a computer with digital values(of TTL level). To simplify the configuration of a multi-channel DAS, RS-485 communication system has used for data transfer.

HExDB: Human EXon DataBase for Alternative Splicing Pattern Analysis

  • HExDB is a database for analyzing exon and splicing pattern information in Homo sapiens. HExDB is useful for specific purposes: 1) to design primers for exon amplification from cDNA and 2) to understand the change of ORFs by alternative splicing. HExDB was constructed by integrating data from AltExtron which is the computationally predicted exon database, Ensemble cDNA annotation, and Affymetrix genome tile published recently. Although it may contain false positive data, HExDB is good starting point due to its sensitivity. At present, there areas many as 2,046,519 exons stored in the HExDB. We found that $16.8\%$ of the exons in the database was constitutive exons and $83.1\%$ were novel gene exons.

MushBase: A Mushroom Information Database Application

  • A database application, namely MushBase, has been built based on Microsoft Access in order to store and manage different kinds of data about mushroom biological information of species, strains and their physiological characteristics such as geometries and growth condition(s). In addition, it is also designed to store another group of information that is experimental data about mushroom classification by Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). These two groups of information are stored and managed in the way so that it is convenient to retrieve each group of data and to cross-refer between them as well.

Data analysis of simulated fuel-loaded sea transportation tests under normal conditions of transport

  • In this study, to evaluate the shock and vibration load characteristics of used fuel, a sea transportation test was conducted using simulated fuel assemblies under normal transport conditions. An overall test data analysis was performed based on the measured strain and acceleration data obtained from cruise, rotation, acceleration, braking, depth of water, and rolling tests. In addition, shock response spectrum and power spectral densities were obtained for each test case. Amplification and attenuation characteristics were investigated based on the load path. The load was amplified as it passed from the overpack to the simulated used fuel-assembly. As a result of the RMS trend analysis, the fuel-loading position of the transportation package affected the measured strain in the fuel rod, and the maximum strains were obtained at the spans with large spacing. However, even these maximum strains were very small compared to the fatigue strength and the cladding yield strength. Moreover, the fuel rods located on the side exhibited a larger strain value than those at the center.

Basic Physiological Research on the Wing Flapping of the Sweet Potato Hawkmoth Using Multimedia

  • We have developed a device for recording biological data by inserting three electrodes and a needle with an angular velocity sensor into the moth for the purpose of measuring the electromyogram of the flapping and the corresponding lift force. With this measurement, it is possible to evaluate the moth-physiological function of moths, and the amount of pesticides that insects are exposed to (currently LD50-based standards), especially the amount of chronic low-concentration exposure, can be reduced the dose. We measured and recorded 2-channel electromyography (EMG) and angular velocity corresponding to pitch angle (pitch-like angle) associated with wing flapping for 100 sweet potato hawkmoths (50 females and 50 males) with the animals suspended and constrained in air. Overall, the angular velocity and amplitude of EMG signals demonstrated high correlation, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.792. In contrast, the results of analysis performed on the peak-to-peak (PP) EMG intervals, which correspond to the RR intervals of ECG signals, indicated a correlation between ΔF fluctuation and angular velocity of R = 0.379. Thus, the accuracy of the regression curve was relatively poor. Using a DC amplification circuit without capacitive coupling as the EMG amplification circuit, we confirmed that the baseline changes at the gear change point of wing flapping. The following formula gives the lift provided by the wing: angular velocity × thoracic weight - air resistance - (eddy resistance due to turbulence). In future studies, we plan to attach a micro radio transmitter to the moths to gather data on potential energy, kinetic energy, and displacement during free flight for analysis. Such physiological functional evaluations of moths may alleviate damage to insect health due to repeated exposure to multiple agrochemicals and may lead to significant changes in the toxicity standards, which are currently based on LD50 values.

죽변항 수역의 장주기 수면진동 특성 (Characteristics of Long Period Resonant Oscillations around Chukpyon Harbor)

  • 죽변항 내외의 2개 정점에 수압식 파고계를 설치하여 동계의 악천후시 현장관측을 실시하고 장주기 부진동 특성을 파악하였다. 관측자료 분석에 의한 공진주기 해석시 기존의 항내 정점에서 스펙트럼 에너지가 최대인 주기 및 그 분포 형태를 기준한 방법외에 항외에 대한 항내 정점에서의 상대 증폭비를 기준한 방법을 도입하였다. 자료 분석과 수치실험 결과 죽변항 수역의 제1 공진 모드는 약 12분에서 약 7배의 증폭비를 가지며 제2 공진 모드는 약 6분인 것으로 나타났다. 관측기간중 항내에서의 수면진동폭은 약 10-20 cm로 나타났으며 황천시 항내 정점에서 단주기파의 군파 효과 또는 이 성분이 장주기파에 중첩된 영향에 의한 것으로 생각되는 2-3분 부근의 부진동이 출현하였다. 단주기파와 장주기파에서 통상적으로 사용되는 반사율을 선형적으로 연결시킨 수치실험을 통하여 3분 이하 부진동에서의 증폭비를 비교적 잘 재현하였다.
