  • Bamboo strand board (BSB) was made with Phyllostachys banbusoides growing in Damyang district. Physical and mechanical properties of this BSB were summarized as follows; The specific gravity of BSB was 0.63∼0.79. Specific gravity decreased slightly with the thickness and length of BSB. Moisture content of BSB manufactured was 5.8∼6.9%. The absorption ate of BSB (42∼48%) did not show any relationship with the thickness and length of BSB. The thickness swelling rate of BSB was 13.9∼17.0%, relatively higher than any other panel products. Thickness swelling rate increased with the thickness of BSB, showing the strand thickness influenced much more on the rate of thickness swelling of BSB than the length of strand. The 3-point bending strength of BSB was 98∼126kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Bending strength of showed the tendency of increase with the increased length of BSB, but with the decreased thickness. In particular, the length of BSB showed more effect on the increase of bending strength of BSB than the thickness of BSB. The compression strength perpendicular to BSB surface was 411 ∼ 465 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and the optimal length of strand for the 1mm- and 2mm-thickness of strand was 40mm and 60mm, respectively. Compression strength paralleled to BSD was 160∼221kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the optimal length of strand for the 2mm-thickness of strand appeared to be 60mm. The present work showed that appearance, physical and mechanical strength of BSB appeared quite positive in terms of board qualities, suggesting that bamboo would be appropriate for the production of board materials. In addition, our work showed that the crucial factor for determining the mechanical characteristics of BSB was the dimension of strand.

  • The 21st century is often dubbed as a century of culture. Many eyes are on various cultures including global and national ones. In particular regional cultures have emerged as a major interest. Korea's Jeonnam province which has been regarded as a backward region is not an exception in this regard. Its cultural contents which are still intact due to lagging development are drawing much attention. Growing interests and efforts to develop traditional cultural items like Jeonju's traditional paper, Naju's natural dyeing or Damyang's bamboo are good examples. This study is to focus on Damyang's bamboo relying on scientific approach and develop educational contents which demonstrate connections between science and culture. Thus, the study presents region-oriented educational contents based on regional cultures, which will bring about pride and affection toward regions and cultures.

  • Although the chemical compositions and biological characteristics of some species of garlic have been investigated, data on Koara garlic are currently lacking. In order to investigate the major compounds and antimicrobial activity of Koara garlic, which was registered as a cultivar in 2012, it was cultivated in Seogwipo, Damyang, and Namhae. Analysis of the chemical composition of the cultivated garlic showed that the alliin, pyruvate contents, and antimicrobial activity were high in garlic grown in Seogwipo ($9.44{\pm}0.28mg/g$, $127.52{\pm}5.50{\mu}M/g$, and 0.31-1.25%, respectively). The total phenol content and reducing sugar contents were abundant in garlic grown in Namhae ($82.23{\pm}0.00g\;GAE/100g$ and $28.59{\pm}0.54mg\;GE/g$, respectively), and the total flavonoid content was high in garlic grown in Damyang ($22.41{\pm}0.77g\;QE/100g$). Although garlics grown in different cultivation areas had different chemical compositions, major compound contents and biological activities of Koara garlic were similar to those of other garlic varieties reported so far. These data will be useful for local farmers, distributors, and consumers.

  • This study analyzed the microstructures and chemical composition of three samples of bronze mirrors excavated in the Jeollanam-do region, particularly Goheung and Damyang. Under x-ray irradiation, the analysis results confirmed the broken parts and pores caused by cracks, casting, and corrosion. Major and minor elemental analysis were performed on three mirrors by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) and Inductively coupled plasma mass spe ctrome try (ICP-MS). The re sult shows that the bronze mirrors containe d Cu-Sn-Pb alloys. Alpha phase and eutectic phase were observed in the microstructure, confirming that the casting was performed without additional heat treatment. Notably, Three bronze mirrors were made early Three Kingdoms period in Korea.

  • Objectives : Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen (BCL), a traditional herbal medicine, is a distilled product of condensation from the burning of fresh bamboo stems. We previously identified the anti-oxidant capacity of BCL in hepatocytes and suggested that BCL is a promising therapeutic candidate for treating oxidative stress-induced hepatocellular damage. Despite the importance of the role played by Kupffer cells in liver disease, the efficacy of BCL on Kupffer cells is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether BCL could suppress LPS-induced inflammation and LPS+ATP-induced inflammasomes in Kupffer cells. Methods : We used ImKCs, a murine immortalized Kupffer cell line to examined whether BCL inhibited LPS-induced inflammation response and oxidave stress. And, we prepared a total of 18 L of BCL, purchased from Bamboo Forest Foods Co., Ltd. (648 Samdari, Damyang-eup, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea), was concentrated using a decompression concentrator. Result : The LPS-induced release of inflammatory cytokines was abolished by BCL treatment. Also, BCL treatment suppressed the LPS+ATP-induced expression of inflammasome proteins (NLRP3, IL-1, and IL-18), and inhib β ited the release of IL-1 . BCL decreased LPS-or LPS+ATP-induc β ed reactive oxygen species production. In addition, BCL increased nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and the expression of HO-1 in a time-dependent manner. Conclusion : These results suggest the efficacy of BCL with respect to its anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammasome effects mediated by Nrf2 in Kupffer cells.

  • This research is the semantic study on the nature cognition and lyricism of pavilion builders as reflected in the pavilion tablets in the Damyang poetry culture area built during 16th century. The names of pavilions, pavilion writings and "poetry with given theme" were studied by actual site visits. The view on the nature and aesthetic awareness of the pavilion builders at the time were explored together with surrounding landscapes. Following conclusions were drawn. 1. Pavilion names borrowed phrases from the famous historical events left by the sages. Or, they took the compliment on the beautiful nature surrounding orthe academic achievement of pavilion owners as the theme, then elaborated them with thinking based on Sung Confucianism. 2. The writings of pavilion literature were the idealistic view on the nature. They think the nature and human as "object and ego are one, object and ego communicate each other, object and ego become one". 3. The nature in the 16th century was the "principle of birth-death-grow-wither" for the intellectuals. They thought that the nature is the ultimate place to return for the realization of life with self-respect. 4. The introduction of fairy land among literary activities in the pavilion was the symbolic means healing the frustrated ego. It was confirmed that they temporarily entrusted their depressed feelings by borrowing the fairy land, far from the reality. The pavilion was the space to escape from the reality and soothe the anger and discord in the reality. 5. The pavilion literature in the Damyang poetry culture area during 16th century sang their pleasure of enjoying the beautiful scenery in the rural area using their social status. The literary works also contained their agony due to the frustration of difficulty in the realization of ideal. When the intellectuals, who already mastered literature, history and philosophy, came down to rural area, built pavilions at the location with beautiful scenery, and spent time while composing poetry, it was an escape from the burden that they should take the social responsibility as the model intellectuals of the society. The pavilions in Damyang poetry-culture area during 16th century were the idealized conceptual world and the space of awareness reflecting the philosophy and thinking of the time.
