Recently, new experimental criteria for reinforced concrete frame structures in high seismic regions have been reported in United States. The objective of the criteria is to get more reliable test data which are valid to compare with other test data done by different researchers. The criteria precribe test method of specimens, analysis method of test data, and limiting values needed to specimens like drift angle, energey dissipation ratio, stiffness, and strength. These criteria might be usefel to get objective conclusion. Shear wall structures, which belong to one of earthquake resisting systems, also need this kind of criteria. But, the general response of shear wall structures is a little bit different from that of frame structures since shear wall restrains the horizontal displacement caused by horizontal force and increases the stiffness and strength. The objective of this paper is to propose a criterion for limiting drift and energy dissipation ratio of shear walls based on structural testing. These are the most important values for presenting the capacity of shear walls. Limiting drift and energy dissipation ratios were examined for tests on shear walls having ductile type failures. Test data were analyzed and compared to the results for a suggested acceptance criteria that involve a limiting drift that is a function of aspect ratio and a limiting energy dissipation ratio that is a function of displacement ductility and damping.

A magnetically levitating capsule train, which runs inside the sub-vacuum tube, can reach ultra-fast speeds by dramatically reducing the aerodynamic drag and friction. The capsule train uses the superconductor electrodynamic suspension (SC-EDS) method for levitation. The SC-EDS method has advantages, such as a large levitation gap and free of gap control, which could reduce the infra-construction cost. On the other hand, disadvantages, such as the large variation of the levitation-guidance gap and small damping characteristics in levitation-guidance force, could degrade the running stability and ride comfort of the capsule train. In this study, a dynamic analytical model of a capsule train based on the SC-EDS was developed to analyze the running dynamic characteristics. First, as important factors in the capsule train dynamics, the levitation and guidance stiffness in the SC-EDS system were derived, which depend non-linearly on the velocity and gap variation. A 3D dynamic analysis model for capsule trains was developed based on the derived stiffness. Through the developed model, the effects of the different running speeds on the ride comfort were analyzed. The effects of a disturbance from infrastructure, such as the curve radius, tube sag, and connection joint difference, on the running stability of the capsule train, were also analyzed.

Aircraft can often be exposed to a variety of environments and vibrations such as engine, hydraulic pump, aerodynamic force. These may cause cracking and destruction of the mechanical structure and sub-components by high-cycle fatigue. The axial piston type pump which is usually applied to the aircraft hydraulic pump can be necessarily accompanied by the fluid pulsation by continuous rotation of the axial piston. The fatigue crack was identified at the dampener fitting welding zone to prevent vibration damping during the running of aircraft equipped with this type of pulsation hydraulic pump. In order to understand the root cause of this matter, fracture and component analyses were carried out and also integral type dampener fitting was applied to prevent recurrence of the crack as a subject of design improvements. Structural integrity stress analysis, fatigue analysis, qualification test and aircraft system equipped test was conducted to verify the design validity in application to integral type dampener fitting. The test results were sufficiently satisfactory with the demand lifetime of the material from the various types of test as conducted and the subject of design improvement in this study could be objectively evaluated that shall be applied to the operational aircraft.
A study of the effects of dynamic pile-soil-structure interactions on the response of super- structures, supported by group piles, are presented in this paper. The dynamic impedance functions of single pile generated by soil-pile interactions are obtained and compared among others using the methods proposed by Novak, Gazetas, and Kuhlemeyer, and using the equivalent cantilever method. Group pile effects are also considered by the following approaches : neglecting interaction effects : group efficiency ratio concept : static interaction approach . and dynamic interaction approach. The responses of a nuclear containment structure are obtained by using the elastic half-space analysis, based on the impedance functions mentioned above. Main conclusions drawn from this study are as follows : 1. The numerical results of the impedance functions calculated by each method were quite different : the Novak's was the smallest, and the Kuhlemeyer's the highest. Considering group effects, similar values in each approach were obtained for the stiffness : the difference was very big for the damping. 2. The top displacement of the structure was reduced by 20% or more by pile installations. However, the base shear force, the base moment, and the resonance frequency were increased by more than two times due to stiffening effect of the ground by pile installations. 3. Whether frequency dependant impedence functions or frequency independant functions were used, the responses of the structure were not so much affected by the choice of the impedance functions. 4. The reduction effect of the top displacement increased with the increase of the maximum ground acceleration.

The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.

A capsule train runs inside a sub-vacuum tube and can reach very high speed due to the low air resistance. A capsule train uses a superconducting electrodynamic suspension (SC-EDS) method for levitation, which allows for a large levitation gap and does not require gap control. However, SC-EDS has inherent characteristics such as the large gap variation and a small damping effect in the levitation force, which can degrade the running stability and ride comfort. To overcome this, a stability improvement device should be designed and applied based on dynamic analysis. In this study, a 1/10 small-scale testbed was developed to replicate the dynamic characteristics of a capsule train and investigate the performance of stability improvement devices. The testbed is composed of a 6-degree-of-freedom Stewart platform for the realization of bogie motion, a secondary suspension with a running stabilization device, and a carbody. Based on the dynamic similarity law proposed by Jaschinski, the small-scale testbed was manufactured, and a bogie motion algorithm was applied with the consideration of guideway irregularity and levitation stiffness. The experimental results from the testbed were compared with simulation results to investigate the performance of the testbed.

The goal of this study is to perform several bending tests on a shape memory alloy bar and to analyze the characteristics of the bending behavior. The other goal is to verify the seismic performance of an SMA bar bending application. Single and double bending tests were conducted with varying loading speeds and maximum displacement. The loading and the unloading stiffness were estimated from the force-displacement curves and the equivalent damping ratio of each test was also assessed. In single bending, the SMA bar showed the stiffness hardening after the displacement of 32 mm. It is assumed that this phenomenon is due to the stress-induced-martensite hardening. The increasing loading speed did not influence on the stiffness of the single bending SMA bar. The stiffness of the double bending bar is about 5 times of that of the single bending. This study introduced a seismic application of SMA bending bars as seismic restrainers for bridges and showed its practicality. SMA bars in bending are used for seismic restrainers in a three-span-simply-supported bridge. They showed the effectiveness to reduce the responses of the bridge and the applicability for a seismic restrainer. The significance of this study is to provide basic knowledge of SMA bending and its seismic applications.

The present study aims to design an optimized hull shape of a floating pendulum-type wave energy converter(WEC). The purpose of these structure is to improve the performance and stability of the WEC by reducing its motion under operating and survival wave conditions. In this study, motion reduction structures, like restoring and dampling plates were installed on a floating pendulum WEC that has been the subject of previous studies. Restoring plates were installed to increase the restoring force and shift the natural period to a shorter period. Damping plates were installed to shift the natural period to a longer period by increasing the added mass. The effects of the structures were then analyzed under different incident wave conditions. The design parameters for the motion reduction structures were size, shape, and installed position. The wave-induced motion characteristics and performance of the floating pendulum WEC were also investigated numerically. Based on the simulation results, we are able to optimize the motion reduction structure of the WEC, thus improving its efficiency and durability.
The excessive wind-induced motion of tall buildings most frequently result from vortex-shedding-induced across-wind oscillations. This form of excitation is most pronounced for relatively flexible, lightweight, and lightly damped high-rise buildings with constant cross-sections. This paper discusses the aerodynamic means ofmitigating the across-wind vortex shedding induced in such situations. Openings are added in both the drag and lift directions in the buildings to provide pressure equalization. Theytend to reduce the effectiveness of across-wind forces by reducing their magnitudes and disrupting their spatial correlation. The effects of buildings with several geometries of openings on aerodynamic excitations and displacement responses have been studied for high-rise buildings with square cross-sections and an aspect ratio of 8:1 in a wind tunnel. High-frequency force balance testshave been carried out at the Kumoh National University of Technology using rigid models with 24 kinds of opening shapes. The measured model's aerodynamic excitations and displacement were compared withthose of a square cylinder with no openings to estimate the effectiveness of openings for wind-induced oscillations. From these results, theopening shape, size, and location of buildings to reduce wind-induced vortex shedding and responses were pointed out.

Earthquakes over 5.0 on the Richter scale have recently occurred in Korea, which has led to interest in the seismic safety of structures. If a water storage facility is damaged by an earthquake, the water could leak, and the insufficient water would make fire suppression difficult. Therefore, a water storage facility should satisfy safety requirements for earthquakes. In this study, the seismic performance of a water tank was improved by installing a lead rubber bearing between the foundation and the tank. It designed the lead rubber bearing available to the existed concrete foundation. ANSYS was used for modeling to consider the interaction between the fluid and structure of the tank and the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure using four seismic waves. In the case of hydrostatic pressure at 2.5 water level, full level, the same stress appeared irrespective of whether the seismic isolation was installed. When hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressures are applied at the same time, the seismic-isolated water tank showed less seismic force, and the damping ratio was lower than that of general seismic isolation. This occurred because the weight of the water tank is much smaller than the stiffness of the seismic isolation. The result is expected to be used for further research on seismic capacity evaluation for water tanks.
