  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of rubber-filler attachments on inorganic filler contained NR vulcanizatic. The results of this study showed as follows. The reinforcing properties and damping values of the vulcanizates in the elastic region showed strong relation with the filler characteristics and temperture. The vulcanizates filled with nature-activated inorganic filler like silica had higer elastic modulus and damping values than the vulcanizates of nature-nonactivated inorganic filter. The reinforcing effects of differential filler loadings on NR raised the effects with temperature rise, but the damping values varied with the filler characteristics and temperature variations.

  • Most of the theorems of nonlinear stability is based on the Lyapunov stability theory. The Lyapunov function method is most well-known and provides precise and rigorous theoretical backgrounds. However, the conventional approach to direct stability analysis has been performed without taking account of damping effects. For accurate stability analysis of nonlinear systems, the damping effects should be considered. This paper presents a new method to derive a group of Lyapunov functions to reflect the damping effects by considering the integral relationships of the system governing equations.

  • The hydropneumatic suspension units, which have applied to the tracked vehicles, have the spring and damping function in the unit. The nonlinear characteristics such as roadwheel rotation effects, gas behavior changes, hydraulic damping characteristics, hysterisis, and frictional forces have been ignored or simplified to analyze the mathematical models in many areas. This study describes the dynamic characteristics and the nonlinear behaviors of hydropneumatic suspension unit considering the nonlinear effects such as the nonlinear spring and nonlinear damping through the simulation and the experiment. The utility of nonlinear analysis through the higher-order spectral analysis is also presented.

  • A geometrically nonlinear analysis procedure including the damping effects is presented for the investigation of the dynamic post-divergence and post-flutter behavior of a non-conservative system. The dynamic nonlinear analysis of plane frame structure subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is carried out by solving the equations of motion using Newmark method. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effects of the internal and external damping forces in the conservative and non-conservative systems.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic behaviors of KHSR(Korea High-Speed Railway) bridge supported by elastomeric bearings subjected to high-speed vehicles. The effects of damping on the dynamic behaviors are also studied. The train composed of two power cars, two motor cars and eighteen passenger cars are simulated using constant moving forces for simplicity and effectiveness in the analysis. Direct integration method are used to solve the dynamic equation of motion. The bridge analyzed is real bridge with 2@40m span and concrete continuos box girder. The bridge is model led using frame element in three dimensional space. From the results of this study, the effects of elastomeric bearing on the dynamic responses of bridge(especially vertical accelerations) may cause undesirable behaviors. Damping are very important in the dynamic behaviors of the bridge subjected to high-speed railways. And so, dynamic analysis of steel bridge for high-speed railway supported by elastomeric bearings should be performed carefully.

  • In recent work, we reported that a hot-rolled Fe-18wt%Mn alloy exhibited high damping capacity as well as excellent mechanical properties. It was also proposed that damping capacity of the alloy was proportional to the ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ boundary area. In the present study, the effects of homogenization(12hrs at $1100^{\circ}C$) and solution treatment(1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ before air cooling) on damping capacity and mechanical properties were investigated for as-cast and heat treated Fe-18wt%Mn alloy. The specimen subjected to both homogenization and solution treatment was found to show superior damping capacity and mechanical properties to the as-cast state due to removal of segregation and increase in ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ boundary area.

  • In this study, shape memory alloy damper with characteristics of pseudoelastic hysteresis for helicopter rotor blades are investigated. SMAs can be available in damping augmentation of vibrating structures. SMAs show large hysteresis in the process of pseudoelastic austenite-martensite phase transformation which takes place while subjected to loading above the austenite finish temperature. Since SMAs display pseudoelastic hysteresis behavior over large strain ranges, a significant amount of energy dissipation is possible. A damper can be designed with SMA wires prestressed to a baseline level somewhere in the middle of the pseudoelastic stress range. An experimental study of the effects of pre-strain and cyclic strain amplitude as well as frequency on the damping behavior of pseudoelastic shape memory alloy wires are performed. The effects of the shape memory alloy damper on aeroelastic and ground resonance stability of helicopter are studied. In aeroelastic stability, the dynamic characteristics of blades related to pitch angle and the amplitude of lag motion for the rotor equipped with SMA damper were examined. The performance of SMA damper on ground resonance instability are presented through the frequencies and modal damping with respect to rotating speed.

  • The response of tall buildings to gust buffeting is usually evaluated assuming that the structural damping is of a viscous nature. In addition, when dampers are incorporated in the design to mitigate the response, their effect is allowed for increasing the building modal damping ratios by a quantity corresponding to the additional energy dissipation arising from the presence of the devices. Even though straightforward, this procedure has some degree of inaccuracy due to the existence of a memory effect, associated with the damping mechanism, which is neglected by a viscous model. In this paper a more realistic viscoelastic model is used to evaluate the response to gust buffeting of tall buildings provided with energy dissipation devices. Both cases of viscous and hysteretic inherent damping are considered, while for the dampers a generic viscoelastic behaviour is assumed. The Laguerre Polynomial Approximation is used to write the equations of motion and find the frequency response functions. The procedure is applied to a 25-story building to quantify the memory effects, and the inaccuracy arising when the latter is neglected.

  • Acoustical properties of chestnut and paulownia woods have been determined in four film thicknesses of oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing on double surfaces of soundboard to elucidate effects of finishing. Accelerometer was attached to the specimen at one third position from one end, and specimen was hit by the impact hammer at one third position from opposite end. Data were processed by vibration analyzer. The ratio of axial-to-transverse sound velocity of untreated specimens of chestnut and paulownia were 3.25 and 5.34, respectively. Natural frequency, specific Young's modulus, acoustical coefficient, sound velocity, damping of sound radiation(DSR) and acoustical converting efficiency(ACE) decreased by oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing for both species. Damping of internal friction of chestnut decreased by oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing, but that of paulownia increased. Natural frequency. specific Young's modulus, acoustical coefficient, sound velocity, and DSR decreased with increased film thickness of both finishing materials. However, damping of internal friction and ACE showed irregular tendency with increased film thickness. Acoustical properties of cashew varnished chestnut specimen were better than those of oriental lacquered specimen. Acoustical properties of oriental lacquered paulownia specimen were better than those of cashew varnished specimen.

  • In a nonlinear site response analysis which is performed in time domain, small strain damping is modeled as viscous damping through use of various forms of Rayleigh damping formulations. Small strain damping of soil is known to be independent of the loading frequency, but the viscous damping is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. The type of Rayleigh damping formulation has a pronounced influence on the dependence. This paper performs a series of nonlinear analyses to evaluate the degree of influence of the viscous damping formulation on Korean soil profiles. Analyses highlight the strong influence of the viscous damping formulation for soil profiles exceeding 30 m in thickness, commonly used in simplified Rayleigh damping formulation overestimating energy dissipation at high frequencies due to artificially introduced damping. When using the full Rayleigh damping formulation and carefully selecting the optimum modes, the artificial damping is greatly reduced. Results are further compared to equivalent linear analyses. The equivalent linear analyses can overestimate the peak ground acceleration even for shallow profiles less than 20 m in thickness.
