Vibration and Damping Characteristics of Composite Structures with Piezo Ceramics (압전 세라믹이 부착된 복합재 구조물의 진동 및 감쇠 특성)

  • A numerical computation and experimental test have been performed for the investigation of dynamic behavior of composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The present finite element method based on layerwise approach can effectively evaluate the characteristics of the composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The natural frequencies and damping values were measured by fitting the frequency response function obtained from FFT analyzer. The frequency-dependent damping properties of composite material were measured to utilize them for the finite element analysis of the composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of finite element analysis.

  • Possibility of passive piezoelectric damping based on a new shunting parameter estimation method is studied using finite element analysis. The adopted tuning method is based electrical impedance that is found at piezoelectric device and the optimal criterion for maximizing dissipated energy at the shunt circuit. Full three dimensional finite element model is used for piezoelectric devices with cantilever plate structure and shunt electronic circuit is taken into account in the model. Electrical impedance is calculated at the piezoelectric device, which represents the structural behavior in terms of electrical field, and equivalent electrical circuit parameters for the first mode are extracted using PRAP (Piezoelectric Resonance Analysis Program). After the shunt circuit is connected to the equivalent circuit for the first mode, the shunt parameters are optimally decided based on the maximizing dissipated energy criterion. Since this tuning method is based on electrical impedance calculated at piezoelectric device, multi-mode passive piezoelectric damping can be implemented for arbitrary shaped structures.

Evaluation of the Vibration Reduction Performance of a Cushioning Layer between Metal Blocks (금속 블록에 삽입된 감쇠층의 진동저감 성능 평가)

  • This study describes an evaluation of the vibration-level reduction effect of natural rubber inserted between two aluminum blocks, in which the modal parameters are predicted using two different damping systems. A numerical model with two degrees of freedom was established for both the cases. One was an eigenvalue problem analysis using a state space method and general viscous damping, whereas the other was a method using hysteretic damping. The modal parameters obtained from these two approaches were compared with those obtained from the finite element method using a commercial package. As a result, the natural frequencies observed in the complex frequency response curve were consistently less than the average of four percents. The damping ratios also showed good agreement within a reasonable range. However, the hysteretic damping system showed a relatively larger difference for all modal parameters. This suggests that the analysis procedure makes it easier to predict the vibration transmission characteristics of the shape and configuration of any cushioning layer.

  • In this study, a simplified approach to modeling the dynamic characteristics of passive constrained layer damping treatments in finite element models is presented. The basic concept is to represent multi-layered composite structures using an equivalent single layer. The equivalent properties are obtained by using the RKU (Ross, Kerwin and Ungar) equations. Comparisons are given between results obtained by the dynamic analysis of the simple models implemented in MSC/NASTRAN and by test measurements. Surface damping treatments are applied to automotive panels as well as simple structures. Using the proposed equivalent modeling technique, higher computational efficiency for the damped composite structures has been obtained.

Vibration Control Characteristics of Laminated Composite ER Beams with Electric Field Dependence (전기장에 따른 복합재 ER Beam의 진동제어 특성)

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.

  • A new concept wave absorber is proposed. It is a net type wave absorber. Its efficiency was reported in another publication. Since it is based on new concept, the traditional wave absorber theory is not applicable. It is modeled by introducing damping terms in linearized free surface boundary conditions in this study. The length and the thickness of the wave absorber are modeled by the length and the coefficient of the damping terms. Series of experiments are carried out to get the data for the coefficients of the damping term. The boundary element method is adopted to solve the system. The predicted wave heights show excellent agreement with those of experiments when the lengths of the incoming waves are within the length of the wave absorber.

  • The blade is an important part of rotating turbomachinery. The blade dynamic strength is of considerable importance as far as the reliability of operation and the life of the engine ate concerned. In this paper, blades are attached to a disk and coupled by means of damping wire. We assumes that the interfaces between the blade and disk dovetails are joined together, which means surface-to-surface contacts without friction. The damping wire is implemented using a beam element and temperature effect in the blade is neglected. Centrifugal forces ale applied by using an angular velocity to all elements in the system. The FEM results showed vibration characteristics in the blade disk system for the cases of a free-standing blade and blades with damping wire, respectively.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.

  • In automotive industry, all passenger vehicles are treated with damping materials to reduce structure borne noise. The effectiveness of damping treatments depends upon design parameters such as choice of damping materials. locations and size of the treatment. Generally, the CAE method uses modal strain-energy information of the bare structural panels to identify flexible regions, which in turn facilitates optimization of damping treatments with respect to location and size. This paper proposes a design of the damping material with a CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) methodology based on finite element analysis and DOE(Design Of Experiments) to optimize damping treatments.

  • Determination of dynamic parameters of a structure such as predominant frequency and damping ratio is one of the most important subjects in dynamics of structures. Different methods are used to determine predominant frequency. These methods are different in the cost, implement accessibility, accuracy, speed, applicability in different conditions, simplicity of calculations and required data accessibility. Calculation of damping ratio by using common experimental procedures is very difficult and costly, then it is assumed as a constant value in most calculations. Microtremor measurements and using spectral ratio method to determine the predominant frequency and damping ratio of structure is of interest in recent years. In this paper, as a case study, the effects of retrofitting on structural dynamic parameters of two four-story buildings by using microtremor measurements and also finite element analysis, is investigated. The results of this study show that microtremor measurements can be utilized to assess the improvement of dynamic behavior of the retrofitted structure and the effectiveness of the method of retrofitting.
