The use of dampers is being considered a means to improve the seismic performance of buildings. It may take considerable time and effort to find an optimal design solution since repeated three-dimensional nonlinear time history analyses are required. Therefore, a preliminary design procedure for seismic retrofit using hysteretic dampers was proposed in this study. In the proposed procedure, the amount of retrofit (required number of dampers) is estimated from the capacity curve of the building before retrofit and allowable story drift of the building. In combining the capacity curves of the building and the dampers, the deformation demand for the dampers can be easily checked against their deformation capacity. The equations to transform the device displacement to roof displacement for the combination of capacity curves are developed. The proposed procedure was applied to the seismic retrofit design of sample buildings. The study found that the estimated capacity curve was very close to the actual capacity curve obtained from the pushover analysis, which can determine an appropriate configuration to meet the required seismic performance.

In this study, we developed a gear-type vane damper which replaces the link type through a proper gear design by means of a finite element analysis. We analyzed the fluid flow according to the amount of angular displacement. torque and backlash problems were addressed in conjunction with the pinion as a structural improvement of the forced draft fan (FD FAN). Through an environmental test. Also, results nearly identical to those in the test could be drawn when using a numerical method. Finally, we compared the gear driving result with simulation results. objective of the present study is to identify a nonlinear flow rate control method for a gear-type vane damper and to propose a damper shape which offers linear flow rate control. This study is related to the development of a gear-type vane damper of the change-link type in a forced draft fan.

This paper presents a review on getting a Weighted Multi-Objective Optimization (WMO) of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) parameters based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) coupled central composite design and Weighted Desirability Function (WDF) to attenuate the earthquake vibration of a jacket supported Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT). To optimize the parameters (stiffness and damping coefficient) of damper, the frequency ratio and damping ratio were considered as a design variable and the top displacement and frequency response were considered as objective functions. The optimization has been carried out under only El Centro earthquake results and after obtained the optimal parameters, more two earthquakes (California and Northridge) has been performed to investigate the performance of optimal damper. The obtained results also compared with the different conventional TMD's designed by Den Hartog's, Sadek et al.'s and Warburton's method. From the results, it was found that the optimal TMD based on RSM shows better response than the conventional damper. It is concluded that the proposed response model offers an efficient approach regarding the TMD optimization.

The vertical extension of a building in general remodeling process increases both gravity and seismic loads by simply adding masses to the building. In this study, a vertical extension structural module (VESM) is proposed for enhancing seismic performance of the existing buildings by utilizing the story-increased parts. The proposed VESM is composed of steel column, steel beam, and beam-end rotational damper. The steel columns are connected to the shear walls and transfer the wall rotation in out-of plane to the steel beam, and then the beam-end rotational damper dissipates the earthquake-induced energy. Numerical analysis result from a cantilever beam of which end-rotation is restricted by rotational damper indicates that the displacement, base shear, and base overturning moment of the existing structures showing cantilever behavior can be significantly reduced by using the proposed method. Also, it is observed that friction-type rotational damper is effective than viscous one.

The purpose of this study is to propose damper system which is easy to design, which can ensure against risks, and to verify earthquake response characteristics. For this study, the pseudo dynamic earthquake response tests carried out for steel frames with metallic damper. As a result, in case of using the metallic damper as a vibration control device proposed by this study, the damper having higher stiffness than main-structure turned to the state of plasticity by little displacement has been proved to be able to absorb earthquake energy.

The outrigger damper system is a structural system with excellent lateral resistance when a wind load occurs. However, research on outrigger dampers is still in its infancy. In this study, dynamic response control performance of damper is analyzed according to change of stiffness value and damping value of damper. To do this, a real-scale 3D model of 50 stories has been developed and the artificial wind load has been entered for dynamic analysis. Generally, the larger the damping value, the smaller the stiffness value is, the more effective it is to reduce the maximum displacement and acceleration response. However, the larger the attenuation value as the cost of construction increases, it is necessary to select appropriate stiffness and damping value when applying an outrigger damper.
A new class of semi-active tuned mass dampers, named as "Ground Hook Tuned Mass Damper" (GHTMD) is introduced. This TMD uses a continuously variable semi-active damper (so called 'Ground-Hook') in order to achieve more reduction in the vibration level. The ground-hook dampers have been used in the auto-industry as a means of reducing the vibration of primary suspension systems in vehicles. This paper investigates the application of this damper as an element of a tuned damper for the vibration reduction of force-excited single degree of freedom (SDOF) models that can be representative of many structural systems. The optimum design parameters of GHTMDs are obtained based on the minimization of the steady-state displacement response of the main mass. The optimum design parameters which are evaluated in terms of non-dimensional values of the GHTMD are obtained for different mass ratios and main mass damping ratios. Using the frequency responses of the resulting systems, performance of the GHTMD is compared to that of equivalent passive TMD, and it is found that GHTMDs are more efficient. A design methodology to obtain the tuning parameters of GHTMD using the relationships developed in this paper is presented.
To reduce the vibration of cable-stayed bridges, conventional magnetorheological (MR) damper control system (CMRDS), with separate power supply, sensors and controllers, is widely investigated. In this paper, to improve the reliability and performance of the control system, one adaptive MR damper control system (AMRDS) consisting of MR damper and piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) is proposed. According to piezoelectric effect, PEH can produce energy for powering MR damper. The energy is proportional to the product of the cable displacement and velocity. Due to the damping force changing with the energy, the new system can be adjustable to reduce the cable vibration. Compared with CMRDS, the new system is structurally simplified, replacing external sensor, power supply and controller with PEH. In the paper, taking the N26 cable of Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Bridge as example, the design method for the whole AMRDS is given, and simple formulas for PEH are derived. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control system, the performance is compared with active control case and simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case. It is shown that AMRDS is better than simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case, and still needed to be improved in comparison with active control case.

The opening of high speed railway upgraded our land transportation speed limit, causing lots of changes including living and culture and also paving the way for stepping up the railway technology. However, it is also true that we had a limit to adopt the existing railway system structured for 150km/h to the new structure requiring a higher speed of approximate 300km/h due to technological, based on the time and experience. More importantly, heading toward a step of operating such a high speed railway system, it has been practically and quickly proposed that the railway needs high speed railway engineering, maintenance technology of parts of the vehicles to have a stable maintenance foundation and localization of major parts. Therefore, this study was intended to research the actual displacement characteristics in runningg on an actual track for the purpose of developing the protective and maintenance technology of springs and dampers, which are core parts among suspension elements of a high speed railway vehicle. For this, it was researched the actual vehicle test and its interpretation centered on primary spring, which is used for the suspension system of a bogie, body-body dampers and body-bogie yaw damper. Also, to analyze the displacement characteristics of suspension system in the actual conditions of high speed railway vehicles, a vehicle‘s dynamic characteristics was analyzed and interpreted. At the same time, a tester for measuring the actual displacement of such suspension elements was designed and attached to actual vehicles, to measure the displacements that occur in running it on the Seoul-Busan line, one of major lines serviced by KTX. The displacement data gained from the test with actual vehicles was analyzed for its displacement distribution depending on the service sections and frequency, with which the valuable data necessary for any potential breakdown or maintenance in the future could be obtained.

In this study, a tuned mass damper(TMD) was installed to control the displacement response to earthquakes by generalizing to six analysis models according to the shape of the upper structure based on the case of various large spatial structures around the world. The six analysis models are ribbed type, latticed type, elliptical type, gable type, barrel type, and stadium type composed of 3D arch trusses. In this paper, ribbed type, latticed type and elliptical type were analyzed. The mass of each TMD was set to 1% of the total structural mass. Result of analyzing the optimal number and position of the analysis model, the displacement response control was the most excellent in the model with 6 and 8 TMDs, and the displacement response decreased in most cases. The displacement response control was better with installing the TMD at the edge point than focusing the TMD at the center of the analysis model. However, when 10 or more TMDs are installed or concentrated in the center, large loads intensively act on the structure, resulting in increased displacement. Therefore, although it is slightly different depending on the shape, it is judged that the displacement response control is the best to install 6 and 8 TMDs at the close to the edge point.
