  • Each year, the coast of Busan is badly damaged, due to storm surge. The damages are greatly dependent upon the local peculiarities of the region in which the storm surge occurs. So, in order to prevent/reduce recurrence of the disaster due to the storm surge, it is very important to investigate the fluctuation characteristics of the storm surge height, related to the local peculiarities at each coastal area in which the occurrence of the disaster is expected. In this paper, using the numerical model, the storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics at the coast of Busan Typhoons of Sarah (5914), Thelma (8705) and Maemi (0314), which caused terrible damage to the coastal areas alongthe coast of Busan in the past, were taken as an object of the storm surge simulations. Moreover, the storm surge due to virtual typhoons, which were combined with the characteristics of each proposed typhoon (Maemi, Sarah, Thelma), compared to the travel routes of other typhoons, was predicted. As expected, the results revealed that the storm surge heights are enhanced at the coastal region with the concavity like a long-shaped bay. Also, the storm surge heights, due to each typhoon, were compared and discussed at major points along the coast of Busan, related to the local peculiarities, as well as the characteristics and the travel route of the typhoon.

  • A new method of Semi-fragile image watermarking which ensures the integrity of the contents of digital image is presented. Proposed watermarking scheme embeds watermark in the form of quantization noise on the wavelet transform coefficients in a specific mid frequency subbands selected from a wavelet packet decomposition based on energy distribution of wavelet transform coefficients. By controlling the strength of embedded watermark using HVS (Human Visual System) characteristic, it is imperceptible by a human viewer while robust against non-malicious attack such as compression for storage and/or transmission. When an attack is applied on the original image, it is highly probable that wavelet transform coefficients not only at the exact attack positions but also the neighboring ones are modified. Therefore, proposed authentication method utilizes whether both current coefficient and its neighbors are damaged. together. So it can efficiently detect and accurately localize attacks inflicted on the content of original image. Decision threshold for authentication can be user controlled for different application areas as needed.

  • We diagnosed on status and problems of environmental assessment regarding development of offshore wind power, and also on reasonable core assessment items. Most of the coastal wind power are located on the western coastline of Korea and Jeju Island. In the selections of the site for the offshore wind farms, a previous investigations should be conducted with regard to distances from the land, stabilities from external forces (tide, wave, etc.) and topographical changes, and characteristics of the surroundings (distributions of protected area, fishing ground, artificial seagrasses, and shipping traffic). It is needed to assess dispersion of suspended solids, changes of the sea bottom, and impacts on fisheries resources and fishing activities under construction of offshore wind power. Furthermore, the responses of marine organisms to noise and vibration, impacts by electromagnetic fields, impacts on sea birds, hindrances to sea lane routes, and damaged scenery and marine protection areas are thoroughly assessed during operation processes. The consultation criteria in case of development of offshore wind farm is adjusted by focusing marine environmental impact assessment.

  • The study of Arundinaria munsuensis Y. Lee to this day was limited to the field of morphological species classification since its first discovery at Jiri mountain in the late 1990s. This native plants, one of Korean endemic species found in Jiri Mt. necessitates further studies about its use as revegetation plants or groundcover plants in urban areas. This study was launched from this need followed by summaries of results below related to its usage. This targeted species is a native Korean species which its natural distribution on the subalpine zone has merit for the wide range of climatic adaptation. Also, the coverage rate reached 78.3% in three years mostly by rhizome growth with an expectation of full coverage in four years providing less maintenance needs after planting. The net price for the construction of pot seedling methods of this plants is relatively economical than other normal revegetation construction methods. For these reasons, drilling for the plants on cut and fill soil slopes driven from pot seedling adapts Arundinaria munsuensis Y. Lee as efficient revegetation plant. Total construction cost for pot seedling work($30cm{\times}30cm$) of Arundinaria munsuensis was approximately 21,000won which is in reasonable price range when compared to other revegetation construction methods of disturbed slopes. As a native Korean plant, Arundinaria munsuensis has wide range of climatic adaptation with less maintenance requirement after planting. This study may suggest a strong possibility of Arundinaria munsuensis as a pot planting material in sloped area.

  • This study is to develop a downstream flood damage prediction model for efficient confrontation in case of extreme and flash flood by future probable small agricultural dam break situation. For a Changri reservoir (0.419 million $m^3$) located in Yongin city of Gyeonggi province, a dam break scenario was prepared. With the probable maximum flood (PMF) condition calculated from the probable maximum precipitation (PMP), the flood condition by dam break was generated by using the HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - Hydrologic Modeling System) model. The flood propagation to the 1.12 km section of Hwagok downstream was simulated using HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System) model. The flood damaged areas were generated by overtopping from the levees and the boundaries were extracted for flood damage prediction, and the degree of flood damage was evaluated using IDEM (Inundation Damage Estimation Method) by modifying MD-FDA (Multi-Dimensional Flood Damage Analysis) and regression analysis simple method. The result of flood analysis by dam-break was predicted to occurred flood depth of 0.4m in interior floodplain by overtopping under PMF scenario, and maximum flood depth was predicted up to 1.1 m. Moreover, for the downstream of the Changri reservoir, the total amount of the maximum flood damage by dam-break was calculated nearly 1.2 billion won by IDEM.

  • This study was to analyze the relationship between the community or species and environmental variables of the vegetation landscape in Naejangsan National Park. The analysis was performed by the ordination of DCA and CCA. The study was to compare and analyze the species composition status by the layer and the growth characterisics of the following vegetations ; Torreya nucifera community, Quercus variabilis - Acer palmatum community, Q. variabilis community, Q. variabilis - Sasa purpurascens community and Daphniphyllam macropodum community. The results are as follows; 1. The result of the study on the relationshkp between the stand scores of DCA ordination and environmental variables showed that the soil pH, the ammount of AV-P2O5 and the ammount of C.E.C. tend to increase while Pinus densiflora community changes to Q. variabilis - Q. serrata community and finally Carpinus laxiflora species community siginigicantly. The relation between the stand scores of CCA ordination and several enviromental variables suggested that the species of C. laxiflora and C. tschonoskii the species of Q. cariabilis and Q. serrata the species of C. pisifera, P. densiflora and Q. aliana in sequence grows in more fertile soil. 2. As the result of the analysis of the T. nucifera community showed, reproduction did not increase, and the characteristic of growth was not affected. The result is shown in the growth curve that was damaged by the climate and the human interference. 3. The A. palmatum was found to be as minor species in the middle layer and the crown areas did not have sufficient crown. 4. The result of the analysis of the relationship between Q. variabilis community and Q. variabilis - S. purpurascens community showed a decreasing tendency in the growth and number of species. 5. D. macropodum which constituted the dominance species in the middle layer had a nomal growth curve, and then the successional trend of D. macropodum species seems to be located in the climax species.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate time course of signal enhancement on Gadomer-17 enhance MRI, and to correlate the size of enhanced area with that of the infarct area on 2'3'5'-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride(TTC) histochemical examination for the assessment of myocardial viability in reperfused Myocardial Infarction in a cat model. Tan cats(average weight: 3.8 kg) which had undergone 90 minutes of occlusion of the LAD followed by 90 minutes of reperfusion underwent MR T2-weighted imaging, and T1-weighted imaging, enhanced T1-weighted imaging. We used 1.5T Magneton Vision MRI system(Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). Signal intensities were measured in the enhanced and non-enhanced areas of enhanced T1-weighted imaging. and TTC histochemical staining the size of the abnormal signal area on each image was compared with that of the infarct area. Maximum enhancement was detected during a $40{\sim}60$ minute period with an average enhancement of $168{\pm}9.9%$ of normal myocardium. TTC staining revealed that the size of the high signal area on T2-weighted images and of the enhanced area on enhanced T1-weighted images was greater than that of the infarct area($T2=48.1%{\pm}3.7$, enhanced $T1=47.2%{\pm}2.6$, TTC $staining=38.7%{\pm}3.1$ ; p<0.05). In reperfused Myocardial Infarction in a cat model, enhanced MR imaging delineates reversibly and irreversibly damaged myocardium, with a strong enhancement and a broad temporal window. We may therefore expect that enhanced MR image is useful for demonstrating myocardial injury.

  • Recently, the occurrence of unusual heavy snow and cold are increasing due to the unusual global climate change. In particular, the temperature dropped to minus 69 degrees Celsius in the United States on January 8, 2018. In Korea, on February 17, 2014, the auditorium building in Gyeongju Mauna Resort was collapsed due to the heavy snowfall. Because of the tragic accident many studies on the reduction of snow damage is being conducted, but it is difficult to predict the exact damage due to the lack of historical damage data, and uncertainty of meteorological data due to the long distance between the damaged area and the observatory. Therefore, in this study, available data were collected from factors that are thought to be corresponding to snow damage, and the amount of snow damage was estimated categorically using a random forest. At present, the prediction accuracy was not sufficient due to lack of historical damage data and changes of the design code for green houses. However, if accurate weather data are obtained in the affected areas. the accuracy of estimates would increase enough for being used for be the degree preparedness of disaster management.

  • In this paper, conservation treatment processes for the wooden furniture in the Presidential Archives are introduced. Conservation treatment strategies for modern wooden cultural heritage have been increasingly studied. The current study uses materials similar to those used by the existing conservation treatment method. Material analysis showed that the chair(Lee136-2) and desk(Yun37) in the Presidential Archives are made of Dipterocarpaceae, and both are coated with two layers of varnishing. FT-IR analysis showed that the varnish has a similar spectrum to that of a nitrocellulose-based lacquer(Lee136-2) and top coat(Yun37) and confirmed that a synthetic material was used. Pollutants had adhered to the surface of the wooden furniture and it was also in structurally unstable condition because of cracks and damage to the varnish and wood. Therefore, a conservation treatment was carried out to restore the damaged areas to their original appearance using similar kinds of materials, based on data obtained by materials analysis.
