To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).

The study presents structural integrity assessment of ductility degradation of a baffle former assembly by performing finite element analysis considering real loading conditions and stress triaxiality. Variations of fracture strain curves of type 304 austenitic stainless steel with stress triaxiality are derived based on the previous study results. Temperature distributions during normal operation such as heat-up, steady state, and cool-down are calculated via finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating and heat convection with reactor coolant. Variations of stress and strain state during long operation period are also calculated by performing sequentially coupled temperature-stress analysis. Fracture strain is derived by using the fracture curve and the stress triaxility. Finally, variations of ductility degradation damage indicator with the fracture strain and the equivalent inelastic strain are investigated. It is found that maximum value of the ductility degradation damage index continuously increases and becomes 0.4877 at 40 EFPYs. Also, the maximum value occurs at top and middle inner parts of the baffle former assembly before and after 20 EFPYs, respectively.
In this study a model for the constitutive relation of a plane concrete is proposed using a micromechariical model. In this model a precursor crack is assumed to exist in the aggregate-cement paste interface, and the LEFM is used to predict the nucleation of the bond cracks and the grow th of mortar cracks. For computational convenience the bond crack-mortar crack configuration is transformed into a straight crack with a point force in the middle. 'The overall compliance and the cons, titutive relation are predicted from the damage due to microcracks, and the predicted stress-strain curves are compared with some experimental data. According to the results, the model predictions are better for under tensile loading than under compression, for high, strength concrete than for normal strength concrete.
This research was undertaken to clarify effects of thermal aging on electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel. The steel was artificially aged at $300{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ for $240{\sim}10,000hrs$. and investigated at $-196{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ using small punch(SP) test. Also, the change in electrochemical properties caused by effects of thermal aging was investigated using electrochemical anodic polarization test in a KOH electrolyte. Carbides and ${\eta}-phase(Fe_2Mo)$ precipitated in the grain bounderies seem to deteriorate the mechanical properties by decreasing cohesive strength in the grain bounderies and promote the current density observed in electrochemical polarization curves. The electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel was drastically decreased in the specimen aged at $650^{\circ}C$.

Carbides and ${\eta}-phase(Fe_2Mo)$ precipitated in the grain boundaries seem to deteriorate the mechanical properties by decreasing cohesive strength in the grain boundaries and to promote the current density observed in electrochemical polarization curves, The electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel decreased significantly in the specimen aged at $650^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the sensitization temperature for conventional austenitic stainless steels.

A conventional packing ring was designed with a large clearance to prevent damage due to the vibration of the rotor, which can lead to an increase in steam leakage. In this study, a flexible packing ring using winding springs was developed to prevent damage to the rotor teeth by minimizing vibration, while maintaining a smaller clearance than that of conventional rotor designs. Theoretical analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to design the winding spring to satisfy the specified allowable stress limit and minimum load requirements. The shape of the winding spring was designed by applying curves to the center and end parts of a flat spring. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used to predict the leakage of the flexible packing ring. Flow rate measurement tests were performed to verify the leakage reduction efficiency and the reliability of the CFD analysis.
Recently, magnesium alloys have been widely used in the automotive, aerospace and electronics industries with the advantages of high specific strength, excellent machinability, high electrical conductivity, and high thermal conductivity. Deep drawn magnesium alloys not only meet the demands environmentally and the need for lighter products, but also can lead to remarkably improved productivity and more rapid qualification of the product The current study reports on a failure prediction procedure using finite element modeling (FEM) and a ductile fracture criterion and applies this procedure to the design of a deep drawing process. Critical damage values were determined from a series of uniaxial tensile tests and FEM simulations. They were then expressed as a function of strain rate and temperature. Based on the plastic deformation histories obtained from the FEM analyses of the warm drawing process and the critical damage value curves, the initiation time and location of fracture were predicted. The proposed method was applied to the process design for fabrication of a Mg automotive compressor case and verified with experimental results. The final results indicate that a Mg case part 39% lighter than an Al die casting part can be produced without any defects.

The Hertzian indentation contact damage behavior of porous alumina with controlled pore shape was investigated by experiments. Porous alumina ceramics containing well-defined pore shape, size and distribution were prepared by incorporation of fugitive spherical starch. Porous alumina with isolated pore structure was prepared with porosity range up to 30%. The indentation stress-strain curves of porous alumina were constructed. Elastic modulus and yield stress can be obtained from the stress-strain relationship. Impulse excitation method for the measurement of elastic modulus was also conducted as well as Hertzian indentation and was confirmed as a useful tool to evaluate the elasticity of highly porous ceramics. Elastic modulus of the inter-connected pore structure is more sensitive to porosity than that of the isolated pore structure. When the specimen had isolated pore structure, higher yield point was obtained than it had inter-connected pore structure. This study proposed that the elastic modiulus of porous ceramics is strongly related to not only porosity, but also the structure of pore.

The aim of this investigation was to extract the fatigue properties at the designated fatigue life of copper foil and observe the mean stress and stress amplitude effects on both the fatigue life and the corresponding surface morphology. Tensile tests were performed to determine the baseline monotonic material properties of the proportional limit and ultimate tensile strength. Constant amplitude fatigue tests were carried out using a feedback-controlled fatigue testing machine. The mean stress and the stress amplitude were changed to obtain the complete nominal stress-life curves. An atomic force microscope was utilized to observe the relationship between the fatigue damage and the corresponding changes in surface morphology. A Basquin's exponent of-0.071 was obtained through the fatigue tests. An endurance limit of 122 MPa was inferred from a Haigh diagram. The specimen surface became rougher as the number of fatigue cycles increased, and there was a close relationship between the fatigue damage and the surface roughness evolution.
This study focuses on the earthquake performance of two URM buildings having typical architectural configurations common for residential use constructed per pre-modern code in Albania. Both buildings are unreinforced clay brick masonry structures constructed in 1960 and 1984, respectively. The first building is a three-storey unreinforced one with masonry walls. The second one is confined masonry rising on five floors. Mechanical characteristics of masonry walls were determined based on experimental tests conducted according to ASTM C67-09 regulations. A global numerical model of the buildings was built, and masonry material was simulated as nonlinear. Pushover analyses are carried out to obtain capacity curves. Displacement demands were calculated according to Eurocode 8 and FEMA440 guidelines. Causes of building failures in recent earthquakes were examined using the results of this study. The results of the study showed that the URM building displays higher displacement and shear force demands that can be directly related to damage or collapse. On the other hand, the confined one exhibits relatively higher seismic resistance by indicating moderate damage. Moreover, effects of demand estimation approaches on performance assessment of URM buildings were compared. Deficiencies and possible solutions to improve the capacity of such buildings were discussed.
