  • Accuracy of seismic response evaluated by a capacity spectrum method (CSM) is generally known to be less than that by Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). In this paper, a procedure for IDA based seismic fragility curves for steel moment resisting frames was suggested. This study compares seismic fragility curves using the suggested method (IDA method) with those using a CSM and intends to verify the validity of the IDA method. The shapes of both seismic fragility curves are similar in slight and moderate damage states. However, in the case of extensive and complete damage states, the fragility curves obtained from the IDA method presents a more steep slope due to less variation (or uncertainties). This is due to the fact that the IDA method can properly capture the structural response beyond yielding rather than the CSM.

  • Seismic fragility curves of a structure represent the probability of exceeding the prescribed structural damage state for a given various levels of ground motion intensity such as peak ground acceleration (PGA), spectral acceleration ($S_a$) and spectral displacement ($S_d$). So those are very essential to evaluate the structural seismic performance and seismic risk. The purpose of this paper is to develop seismic fragility curves for PSC box girder bridges. In order to construct numerical fragility curve of bridge structure using nonlinear time history analysis, a set of ground motions corresponding to design spectrum are artificially generated. Assuming a lognormal distribution, the fragility curve is estimated by using the methodology proposed by Shinozuka et al. PGA is simple and generally used parameter in fragility curve as ground motion intensity. However, the PGA has not good relationship with the inelastic structural behavior. So, $S_a$ and $S_d$ with more direct relationship for structural damage are used in fragility analysis as more useful intensity measures instead of PGA. The numerical fragility curves based on nonlinear time history analysis are compared with those obtained from simple method suggested in HAZUS program.

  • Seismic fragility curves present the conditional probability of damage to target structures due to external seismic load and are widely used in various ways. When constructing such a seismic fragility curve, it is essential to consider various types and numbers of ground motions. In general, the earthquake occurrence characteristics of an area where the target structure of the seismic fragility curve exists are analyzed, and based on this, appropriate ground motions are selected to derive the seismic fragility curve. If the number of selected ground motions is large, the diversity of ground motions is considered, but a large amount of computational time is required. Conversely, if the number of ground motions is too small, the diversity of ground motions cannot be considered, which may distort the seismic fragility curve. Therefore, this study analyzed the relationship between the number of ground motions considered when deriving the seismic fragility curve and the parameters of the seismic fragility curve. Using two example structures, numerical analysis was performed by selecting a random number of ground motions from a total of two hundred, and a seismic fragility curve was derived based on the results. Analysis of the relationship of the parameter of the seismic fragility curve and the number of selected ground motions was performed. As the number of ground motions considered increases, uncertainty in ground motion selection decreases, and when deriving seismic fragility curves considering the same number of ground motions, uncertainty increases relatively as the degree of freedom of the target structure increases. However, considering a relatively large number of ground motions, uncertainty appeared insignificant regardless of increased degrees of freedom. Finally, it is possible that the increase in the number of ground motions could lower the epistemic uncertainty and thus improve the reliability of the results.

  • This paper deals with the formulation and development of fracture criteria for high-strength structural members containing surface damage in the form of notches (i.e., blunt defects). The important role of the yield strength of the material and its strain hardening capacity (evaluated by means of the constitutive law or stress-strain curve) is analysed in depth by considering the fracture performance of notched samples taken from high-strength steels with different levels of cold drawing (the most heavily drawn steel being commercial prestressing steel used in prestressed concrete). The final aim of the paper is to establish fracture-based design criteria for structural members made of steels with distinct yield strength and containing very different kinds of notch-shape surface damage.

  • In this study, the fatigue test at room temperature and residual resistivity measurement test at 12K were carried out, respectively, using a 9 strand Cu-Ni/NbTi/Cu composite cable, in order to investigate how the fatigue damage effects on critical properties. Through the fatigue test of a 9 strand Cu-Ni/NbTi/Cu composite cable, a conventional S-N curve was obtained even though there existed a possibility of fretting among strands. From the resistivity measurement of a NbTi strand after fatigue tests, it was found that with increase of the repeated number the RRR increased slightly, and the trend became significant with increase in maximum value of the applied stress amplitude.

  • In damage investigation of building structures suffering from earthquake, estimation of residual seismic capacity is essential in order to access the safety of the building against aftershocks and to judge the necessity of repair and restoration. It has been proposed that an evaluation method for post-earthquake seismic capacity of reinforced concrete buildings based. on the residual energy dissipation capacity (the residual seismic capacity ratio )in lateral force-displacement curve of structural members. The proposed method was adopted in the Japanese 'Damage Level Classification Standard' revised in 200l. To evaluate the residual seismic capacity of RC column, experimental tests with positive and negative cyclic loading was carried out using RC building column specimen. Parameters used by the experiment are deformability and member proportion. From the test results, it is appropriated that the residual seismic capacity of RC buildings damaged by earthquakes is evaluated using the method in the Guideline.

  • In the present study, a practical method to predict cavitation erosion, which caused a critical damage on hydraulic machineries, was developed. Impact and critical velocities were defined to develop a practical method for the prediction of cavitation erosion. To develope the practical method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced. Cavitating flows with erosion in a converging-diverging nozzle and around a hydrofoil were simulated by developed and validated code. Based on the CFD results, the cavitation erosion coefficient was derived by a curve fitting method. The cavitation erosion coefficient was formulated as the function of the cavitation and Reynolds numbers. A cavitating flow in an axisymmetric nozzle followed by radial divergence was simulated to validate the developed practical method. For the application to a propeller, a cavitating flow around a propeller was simulated. Predicted damage extent showed similar with damaged full-scale propeller blade.

  • The only property of the random stresses to affect the life length are their damage amount and are independent of the especial realization in stress case. This paper shows the result is discussed that the randomness of the life length is caused by the randomness of the strength rather than by the randomness of the stress when the load is a random function and the strength is random as well. This special model is well-suited model for comparative calculations since it connects fatigue life for random stresses to fatigue life for periodically curve loads, which is usually measured in experiments.

  • Recently structural damage has been frequently observed in reinforced concrete brdiges due to repeated loads such as vehicular traffic an due to continual overloads by heavy duty trucks. Therefore, the purpose of this experimental stduy is to investigate the damage mechanism due to fatigue behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete beams under repeated loads. From the test results, the relation of cycle loading to deflection is on the mid-span , the crack growth and the modes of failure according to cycle number, fatigue life and S-N curve were observed through the fatigue test. Based on the fatigue test results , high-strength reinforced concrete beams failed to 57 ∼66 percent of the static ultimate strength . Fatigue strength aobut two million cycles from S-N curves was certified by 60 percent of static ultimate strength.
