Sea ice is the main factor affecting the safety of the Arctic engineering. However, traditional numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics have difficulties in resolving discontinuous problems like ice damage. In this paper, a non-local, meshfree numerical method called "peridynamics", which is based on integral form, was applied to simulate the interaction between level ice and a cylindrical, vertical, rigid structure at different velocities. Ice in the simulation was freshwater ice and simplified as elastic-brittle material with a linear elastic constitutive model and critical equivalent strain criterion for material failure in state-based peridynamics. The ice forces obtained from peridynamic simulation are in the same order as experimental data. Numerical visualization shows advantages of applying peridynamics on ice damage. To study the repetitive nature of ice force, damage zone lengths of crushing failure were computed and conclude that damage zone lengths are 0.15-0.2 times as ice thickness.
Finite element simulation of elastic wave propagation in a concrete plate was carried out to investigate its modeling and damage detection procedures. For the numerical stability three criteria were introduced and tested. With a proper element size and time increment, two different kinds of damage scenarios (crack and deterioration) were applied to verify the feasibility of the finite element simulation. It is shown that the severities of those damages are sensitive to the received displacement signals.
The paper describes the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the structural and damage response of sandwich composites to low-velocity impact. Sandwich panels consisting of laminated composite skins with three different layups bonded to a PVC foam core were subjected to impact at various energy levels corresponding to barely visible impact damage (BVID) in the impacted skins. Damage assessment analyses were performed on the impacted panels to characterise the extent and the nature of the major failure mechanisms occurring in the skins. The data collected during the experimental analyses were finally used to assess the predictive capabilities of an FE tool recently developed by the authors for detailed simulation of impact damage in composite sandwich panels. Good agreement was observed between experimental results and model predictions in terms of structural response to impact, global extent of damage and typical features of individual damage mechanisms.

The stochastic damage locating vector (SDLV) method has been studied extensively in recent years because of its potential to determine the location of damage in structures without the need for measuring the input excitation. The SDLV method has been shown to be a particularly useful tool for damage localization in steel truss bridges through numerical simulation and experimental validation. However, several issues still need clarification. For example, two methods have been suggested for determining the observation matrix C identified for the structural system; yet little guidance has been provided regarding the conditions under which the respective formulations should be used. Additionally, the specific layout of the sensors to achieve effective performance with the SDLV method and the associated relationship to the specific type of truss structure have yet to be explored. Moreover, how the location of truss members influences the damage localization results should be studied. In this paper, these three issues are first investigated through numerical simulation and subsequently the main results are validated experimentally. The results of this paper provide guidance on the effective use of the SDLV method.
After measuring actual stress by two measurements(Dynamic Strain Meter, Histogram Recorder) on truss rail road bridge, we could perform time history analysis by 3-D beam element method on modelling bridge. And then, after analyzing bridge structure in static by 3-D modelling, we estimated degree of fatigue damage in main member, secondary member of tie zone, cutting area of base metal cross section for confirming the result. In case that the simulated stress is carried out on modeling bridge, most of those simulation mainly is performed by main members. But in real bridge fatigue damage problems generally caused by junctions, connections, joints in which especially local stress is activated. Therefore, in this paper actual stress on critical area was estimated through the analysis result by simulation. With this study, we can estimate the degree of fatigue damage from a safety point of view and comparative accuracy.
This study presents a finite element simulation of elastic waves for detecting anti-symmetric damages in an adhesively-bonded single lap joint. Plane strain elements were used for modeling adherents (aluminum) and adhesives (epoxy). Three types of damage were introduced: thickness reduction, elasticity deterioration, and voids in the adhesive layers, and two excitation and reception arrangements (ER1 and ER2) were used to investigate the detectability of the damage. The simulation showed that symmetrically located damage, such as a thickness reduction, can be detected by one excitation and one reception arrangement (ER1) and anti-symmetric damages, such as elasticity deterioration and voids, can be detected by modified two-point elastic wave excitation (ER2). Compared with the ER1 arrangement, the ER2 arrangement does not require a baseline signal for damage detection; hence, an efficient method of anti-symmetric damage detection in an adhesively-bonded single lap joint is proposed.
This paper presents the numerical simulation of the rigid 12.6 mm diameter kinetic energy ogive-nosed projectile impact on plain and fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) targets with compressive strengths from 45 to 235 MPa, using a three-dimensional finite element code LS-DYNA. A combined dynamic constitutive model, describing the compressive and tensile damage of concrete, is implemented. A modified Johnson_Holmquist_Cook (MJHC) constitutive relationship and damage model are incorporated to simulate the concrete behavior under compression. A tensile damage model is added to the MJHC model to analyze the dynamic fracture behavior of concrete in tension, due to blast loading. As a consequence, the impact damage in targets made of plain and fiber reinforced concrete with same matrix material under same impact velocities (650 m/s) are obtained. Moreover, the damage distribution of concrete after penetration is procured to compare with the experimental results. Numerical simulations provide a reasonable prediction on concrete damage in both compression and tension.
This study experimentally and numerically investigated the tensile damage progress in stitched laminates. In particular, it focused on the effects of stitching on the damage progress. First, we experimentally confirmed that ply cracks and delamination appeared under load regardless of stitching. We then performed damage-extension simulation for stitched laminates using a layer-wise finite element model with stitch threads as beam elements, in which the damage (ply cracks and delamination) was represented by cohesive elements. A detailed comparison between observation and the simulated results confirmed that stitching had little effect on the onset and accumulation of ply cracks. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the stitch threads significantly suppressed the extension of the delamination.

Natural draught cooling towers often develop visible crack structures as consequences of progressive damage processes over their life-time. The aim of this paper is a numerical demonstration of the progressive damage process of cooling towers, representatively for the reinforced concrete structures, in order to improve the durability and extend the life-time of structures subjected to such damage processes. For the analyses, the applied material model for reinforced concrete will be briefly introduced. An existing natural draught cooling tower with a pronounced crack structure, in which this crack structure indicates the typical damage pattern of large cooling towers will be numerically simulated. The change of dynamical behavior of the structure with regard to natural frequencies, reflecting the global damage process due to the degrading stiffness of the structure in dependence of the load type and intensity, will be presented and discussed.
Seismic safety is considered to be one of the key design objectives of AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP) in strong earthquakes. Dynamic behavior, damage development and aggravation effect are studied in this study for the three main components of AP1000 NPP, namely reinforced concrete shield building (RCSB), steel vessel containment (SVC) and reinforced concrete auxiliary building (RCAB). Characteristics including nonlinear concrete tension and compressive constitutions with plastic damage are employed to establish the numerical model, which is further validated by existing studies. The author investigates three earthquakes and eight input levels with the maximum magnitude of 2.4 g and the results show that the concrete material of both RCSB and RCAB have suffered serious damage in intense earthquakes. Considering RCAB in the whole NPP, significant damage aggravation effect can be detected, which is mainly concentrated at the upper intersection between RCSB and RCAB. SVC and reinforcing bar demonstrate excellent seismic performance with no obvious damage.
