  • The objective of this paper is to show the effectiveness of the wavelet transform by means of its capability to estimate the Lipschitz exponent. In particular, we show that the magnitude of the Lipschitz exponent can be used as a useful tool estimating the damage extent. An effective method based on the Lipschitz exponent is proposed and we present the results investigated both numerically and experimentally. The continuous wavelet transform by a Mexican hat wavelet having two vanishing moments is utilized for the estimation of the Lipschitz exponent.

  • As the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increase in Korea, interest in earthquake damage reduction technology has increased. Therefore, research on vibration damping devices that directly respond to seismic loads is being actively researched. After an earthquake, damage or destruction of the device occurs due to the yield of materials, and thus it takes considerable cost and time for restoration and replacement. To supplement the problems of the existing earthquake damage reduction technology, a study was conducted on the recentering smart damper that can be used continuously after an earthquake. In this study, the recentering smart damper that can be restored to its original shape after load removal was developed using superelastic shape memory alloy, pre-compressed polyurethane. General steel was commonly applied to verify the seismic performance of the superelastic shape memory alloy, and the performance of the smart damper was verified according to the amount of polyurethane pre-compressed

  • 본 논문에서는 구조물의 건전성 평가를 위하여 지진하중을 받은 프레임 구조물의 응답 가속도를 웨이블렛펙킷 변환(Wavelet Packet Transform; WPT)을 이용하여 분해한 후 인공신경망을 이용하여 각 부재의 손상도를 평가하였다. 인공신경망에는 응답가속도의 분해된 성분 중 에너지가 가장 큰 5개의 성분이 입력 값으로 사용 되었는데 인공신경망의 출력층에 있는 2개의 노드는 각각 손상된 부재와 손상도를 나타낸다. 이 논문에서 제시된 방법을 이용하여 구조물의 손상된 부재와 손상도를 평가하였고 만족스러운 결과를 얻었다.

  • This study investigates the fatigue life and the damage possibility of connecting rod by the fatigue tool of Ansys workbench. The case of constant fatigue loading variation 'Sine' becomes more stable than that of nonconstant loading but the magnitude of constant load becomes larger than that of nonconstant load. Among nonconstant fatigue loads, the case of 'SAE Bracket History' which is severest at the variation of load tends to be most unstable. The case of 'Sample History2' which becomes a little slow at the variation of load tends to be most stable. The maximum relative damage in case of 'SAE Bracket History' is occurred near the average stress '0' and this case can be shown to have the possibility to take more damage than another case.

Analysis of Laser-protection Performance of Asymmetric-phase-mask Wavefront-coding Imaging Systems

  • Wavefront-coding imaging can achieve high-quality imaging along with a wide range of defocus. In this paper, the anti-laser detection and damage performance of wavefront-coding imaging systems using different asymmetric phase masks are studied, through modeling and simulation. Based on FresnelKirchhoff diffraction theory, the laser-propagation model of the wavefront-coding imaging system is established. The model uses defocus distance rather than wave aberration to characterize the degree of defocus of an imaging system. Then, based on a given defocus range, an optimization method based on Fisher information is used to determine the optimal phase-mask parameters. Finally, the anti-laser detection and damage performance of asymmetric phase masks at different defocus distances and propagation distances are simulated and analyzed. When studying the influence of defocus distance, compared to conventional imaging, the maximum single-pixel receiving power and echo-detection receiving power of asymmetric phase masks are reduced by about one and two orders of magnitude respectively. When exploring the influence of propagation distance, the maximum single-pixel receiving power of asymmetric phase masks decreases by about one order of magnitude and remains stable, and the echodetection receiving power gradually decreases with increasing propagation distance, until it approaches zero.

Health monitoring of a new hysteretic damper subjected to earthquakes on a shaking table

  • This paper presents the experimental results obtained by applying frequency-domain structural health monitoring techniques to assess the damage suffered on a special type of damper called Web Plastifying Damper (WPD). The WPD is a hysteretic type energy dissipator recently developed for the passive control of structures subjected to earthquakes. It consists of several I-section steel segments connected in parallel. The energy is dissipated through plastic deformations of the web of the I-sections, which constitute the dissipative parts of the damper. WPDs were subjected to successive histories of dynamically-imposed cyclic deformations of increasing magnitude with the shaking table of the University of Granada. To assess the damage to the web of the I-section steel segments after each history of loading, a new damage index called Area Index of Damage (AID) was obtained from simple vibration tests. The vibration signals were acquired by means of piezoelectric sensors attached on the I-sections, and non-parametric statistical methods were applied to calculate AID in terms of changes in frequency response functions. The damage index AID was correlated with another energy-based damage index -ID- which past research has proven to accurately characterize the level of mechanical damage. The ID is rooted in the decomposition of the load-displacement curve experienced by the damper into the so-called skeleton and Bauschinger parts. ID predicts the level of damage and the proximity to failure of the damper accurately, but it requires costly instrumentation. The experiments reported in this paper demonstrate a good correlation between AID and ID in a realistic seismic loading scenario consisting of dynamically applied arbitrary cyclic loads. Based on this correlation, it is possible to estimate ID indirectly from the AID, which calls for much simpler and less expensive instrumentation.

  • 본 연구에서는 지진해일 실시간 정량 대응을 위해 발생원 위치 및 지진규모에 따른 해안침수예상도 작성 방법을 제안하였으며 그 방법은 다음과 같다. 관심지역에 지진해일 피해를 발생시킬 것으로 예상되는 발생원을 선정하고 지진규모에 따른 수치모의를 수행하여 각 발생원별 지진규모별 침수예상도를 작성하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 시범적으로 동해안 임원항을 대상으로 일본 서안에 위치한 11개의 잠재 지진해일 발생원과 7개의 지진규모에 대하여 침수예상도를 작성하였다.

Construction failures of masonry and adobe buildings during the 2011 Van earthquakes in Turkey

  • On October 23, 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck Van, Turkey. This powerful earthquake caused the deaths of 604 people, more than 2,000 injuries, and a considerable loss of property. After this devastating earthquake, on November 9, 2011, another earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred. This moderate earthquake caused the deaths of 40 people. Partial and total collapse of the masonry and adobe buildings occurred in the rural areas of Van. In this paper, the acceleration records and response spectrums of the earthquakes were given and the structural deficiencies and reasons of the failures of the rural buildings were evaluated according to the Turkish Seismic Code. The observed failures showed that low quality of structural materials, poor workmanship, lack of engineering services and insufficient detailing of the structural elements are the main reasons of damages.

  • A wheel and axle failure can cause a derailment with its attendant loss of life and property. The service conditions of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. Damages of railway wheel are a spalling by wheel/rail contact and thermal crack by braking heat etc. One of the main source of damage is a residual stress. therefore it is important to evaluate exactly. A Residual stress of wheel is formed at the process of heat treatment when manufacturing. it is changed by contact stress developed by wheel/rail contact. Distributions of residual stress vary according to a magnitude of wheel load, a magnitude of friction when acceleration and deceleration. The objective of this paper is to estimate the influence of wheel motion on the residual stress distribution in the vicinity of the running surface.

  • Common mode voltage (CMV) generation is a major problem in switching power converter fed induction motor drive systems. CMV is the zero sequence voltage generated due to the switching action of power converters. Even a small magnitude of CMV with a high rate of change may circulate large bearing currents which may damage a machine's bearings and shorten its life. There are several methods of controlling CMV. This paper presents 3-level sinusoidal pulse width modulation based techniques to control the magnitude and rate of change of CMV in multilevel AC-DC-AC drive systems. Simulation and experimental investigations have been presented to validate the performance of proposed technique to control CMV in 3-level neutral point clamped inverter based AC-DC-AC system.
