The damage inspection of container surface is performed by the expert inspectors at the container terminal gate of harbor. In this paper, we substitute the expert's capability with the damage inspection system using the artificial intelligent control algorithm and vision system, so we can improve the work environment and effectively decrease the inspection time and cost. Firstly, using six CCD cameras attached to the terminal gate, whole container is partially captured according to eleven sensors aligned with the entering direction of container. Captured partial images are inspected by the fuzzy system which the expert's technology is embedded. Next, we compose partial images to be a complete container image through the correlation coefficient method. Complete container image is saved to solve future troublesome problems. In this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed system was verified through the field test.
In this paper, an estimating damage on external surface of container using Capsize-Gaussian-Function (be called CGF) is presented. The estimation of the damage size can be get directly from two parameters of CGF, these are the depth and the flexure, also the direction of damage. The performance of the present method has been illustrated using an image of damage container, which had been taken from Hanjin Busan Port, after using image processing techniques to do preprocessing of the image, especially, the main used technique is Canny edge detecting that is widely used in computer vision to locate sharp intensity and to find object boundaries in the image, then correlation between the edge image from the preprocessing step and the CGF with three parameters (direction, depth, flexure), as a result, we get an image that perform damage information, and these parameters is an estimator directly to the damage.
This paper describes dynamic finite element analyses performed to study the dynamic behaviors of a shipping container under the impact onto rigid target due to the accidental fall from the hight of 9 m. Using two and three dimensional techniques, the shipping container which gave the maximum damage, ten different drop orientations are considered ; at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ from $45^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ According to the present results, the orientation of the shipping container which gave the maximum damage is $85^{\circ}$ from horizontal for oblique drop in the primary impact. In the optimal design of the shipping container, the impact limiter material must be considered importantly because it's proper selection affects the weight and the manufacturing cost of the shipping container. The analysis of the shipping container in this paper demonstrated that the shipping container is structurally sound relative to the regulatory drop test requirements.
Objects adrift can cause considerable damage to coastal infrastructure and property during tsunami and storm surge events. Despite the potential for harm, the drifting behavior of these objects remains poorly understood, thereby hindering effective prediction and mitigation of collision damage. To address this gap, this study employed a motion analysis program to track a drifting container's location using images from an existing laboratory experiment. The container's trajectory and velocity were calculated based on the positions of five markers strategically placed at its four corners and center. Our findings indicate that the container's maximum drift velocity and distance are directly influenced by the scale of the solitary wave and inversely related to the container's weight. Specifically, heavier containers are less likely to be displaced by solitary waves, while larger waves can damage coastal structures more. This study offers new insights into container drift behavior induced by solitary waves, with implications for enhancing coastal infrastructure design and devising mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of collision damage.
Evaluation of fatigue strength considering the springing effect of very large container ships is crucial in the design stage. In this study, we established a fatigue strength evaluation method considering a linear springing component in the frequency domain. Based on a three-dimensional global model, a fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed and the modal superposition method was applied to determine the hot spot stress at the hatch corner of very large container ships. Fatigue damage was directly estimated using the stress transfer function with a linear springing response. Furthermore, we proposed a new methodology to apply the springing effect to fatigue damage using hull girder loads. Subsequently, we estimated the fatigue damage contribution due to linear springing components along the ship length. Finally, we discussed the practical application of the proposed methods.
Occurrence of accidents at a container terminal results in casualties and damages of equipments which are involved in the accidents, and affects the terminal operation. Therefore, analyzing factors affecting occurrence of accidents at a container terminal is important for efficient operation of the terminal. Most of existing studies analyzing factors of accidents have performed in a land transportation field. And most of existing studies in a maritime field have focused on developing risk assessment methods, rather than identifying factors of accidents. This study aims to analyze the factors affecting the damage level which was resulted from accidents at a container terminal in Busan, Korea. After a basic statistical analysis of the accident dataset which was occurred in the terminal, a linear regression model is applied to identify the factors which affect the damage level resulted from the accident. As a result of analysis, it is found that the more number of equipments, facilities and containers damaged from the accidents positively affect the damage level from the accidents, as well as dozing during working. The results of this study are expected to be a basic for developing safety management.

The effects of hull-girder vibration on the fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship are discussed in the present paper. Firstly, the short-term sea states are categorized according to the occurrence probability of each sea state. Time histories of hull-girder stress in short-term sea states are calculated by means of a nonlinear simulation code of ship response assuming that the hull-girder is rigid and flexible. Then, the calculated stress peaks are processed by the rainflow counting method, where two different counting procedures are used based on the considerations of crack propagation behaviors. Finally, the fatigue damage in life time of the ship in each categorized short-term sea state is estimated by means of Miner's rule. Based on the calculated results, the effects of hull-girder vibrations on the fatigue damage are clarified by disaggregated damage from short-term sea state.
