  • It is very important to secure sufficient river maintenance flow for the ecosystem, since the ecosystem in the downstream section of the dam is greatly affected by the stream maintenance flow from the dam. However, the amount of discharge from the Seomjingang Dam is decreasing year by year, this study estimated the ecological flow required for the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam, which is known as the habitat of the endangered Acheilognathus somjinensis, in order to secure the river flow of the Seomjingang Dam. For this purpose, the proper discharge was calculated using the PHABSIM model, which is a hydrological survey and physical habitat simulation method, and the proper discharge of other fish species were also comprehensively reviewed. As a result of this study, the current river maintenance flow at the Seomjingang Dam partially satisfies the ecological maintenance flow including the Acheilognathus somjinensis in the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam. However, this is recognized as the minimum discharge to maintain the ecology in the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam, and it would be more desirable to secure larger river maintenance flow than this. This study can contribute the determination of the river maintenance flow of the Seomjingang Dam by proposing the river maintenance flow considering the fish habitat environment in the river.

  • This paper describes the development of a robotic maintenance system for use in a maintenance operation of the nozzle dam in a water chamber of a steam generator at the Kori nuclear power plant in Korea. The robotic maintenance system was designed to minimize the personnel exposure to a hazardous radioactive environment. This robotic maintenance system is operated by a teleoperated control which was designed to perform the nozzle dam maintenance tasks in a remote manner without endangering the human workers. Specific maintenance tasks involve the transportation, insertion, and removal of nozzle dams in a water chamber inside a steam generator via a narrow man-way entrance port. The developed robotic maintenance system has two major subsystems: a two degrees of freedom guiding device acting as the main guiding arm and a master-slave manipulator with a kinematic dissimilarity. The mechanical design considerations, control system, and capabilities of the robotic maintenance system are presented. Finally, a graphical representation of the nozzle dam maintenance processes in a simulated work environment are also demonstrated.

  • Seismic intensity deduced from instrumental data has been evaluated using the empirical relationship between intensity and peak ground acceleration (PGA) during an earthquake. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) developed a seismic intensity meter, which can estimate the real-time seismic intensity from seismic motions observed at a local site to evaluate the damage during the earthquake more correctly. This paper proposes a practical application of the JMA intensity to dams during the 2013 earthquake in Yeongcheon, Korea. In the present paper, seismic intensity was estimated from the relationships between accelerations observed at Yeongcheon Dam. Estimated seismic intensities were in the range of 0 to 3, which was verified from the displacements of dams and the variation of the ground water level observed at Yeongcheon dam during the earthquake. The JMA intensity, which is determined by considering the frequency, duration of cyclic loading, etc., was 0 (zero) and there was no damage to Yeoncheon dam during the earthquake.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effective managerial factors influencing dose reduction of the nozzle dam installation and removal tasks ranking within top 3 in viewpoint of average collective dose of nuclear power plant maintenance job. Background: International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommended to reduce unnecessary dose and to minimize the necessary dose on the participants of maintenance job in radiation fields. Method: Seven sessions of nozzle dam installation and removal task logs yielded a multiple regression model with collective dose as a dependent variable and work time, number of participants, space doses before and after shield as independent variables. From the sessions in which a significant reduction in collective dose occurred, the effective managerial factors were elicited. Results: Work time was the most important factor contributing to collective dose reduction of nozzle dam installation and removal task. Introduction of new technology in nozzle dam design or maintenance job is the most important factor for work time reduction. Conclusion: With extended task logs and big data processing technique, the more accurate prediction model illustrating the relationship between collective dose reduction and effective managerial factors would be developed. Application: The effective managerial factors will be useful to reduce collective dose of decommissioning tasks as well as regular preventive maintenance tasks for a nuclear power plant.

  • Construction industry becomes large and complicated as that occurred in the construction processes and operations, and the growing social demand for more systematic and efficient methods of integrated management increases. Current facility maintenance system has been regarded as large labor-intensive and fairly stagnant, and faced on several issues including inefficiency in cost and time to collect and utilize various field information. Thus, this paper presents a maintenance prototype utilizing NFC technology and smart devices to efficiently collect and manage the field information in the course of the construction processes. By choosing dam facilities as a case study, construction data for dam inspection and maintenance were classified according to dam maintenance guideline, and database structure was constructed to incorporate with the NFC tags and smart device interface. The system prototype presented in this paper would improve the quality of the dam facilities maintenance system and provide business convenience and usability by contributing increased efficiency of field information management and sharing.

  • Although readjustment of monitoring system for existing fill dam maintenance is needed by the sustainable increasing of the abandonment rate of monitoring devices by malfunction through the life-cycle of dam, monitoring plans for long-term dam safety has relied on the experience and the opinion of minor expert group without systematic and quantitative analysis on the failure modes and the priority order of monitoring devices on maintenance. In this study the priority order of monitoring devices of existing 5 fill dams was evaluated quantitatively based on the preceding study (Andersen et al, 1999) and the result recommended the establishment of real-time monitoring system for seepage, pore pressure and crest settlement as the readjustment plan for existing fill dam monitoring system. This readjustment plan matches well with the recommendation of PWRI (1984), JCOLD (1986) and the results from Bagherzadeh-Khakkahali and Mirghasemi (2005).

  • Continuous monitoring of dam performance is essential to earth and rockfill dams safety because it has to be guaranteed for safety during construction period of course and from initial impounding to a long term maintenance period of dam. Among the 31 dams managed by Kwater at present, the proportion of dams being over 20 years after completion of construction is 42% and it is estimated that the loss rate of monitoring devices will be increase as times. Monitoring devices would be impossible to repair since those are mostly installed in the dam body and foundation. If repairing of monitoring devices is possible, the expenditure will be expensive. Therefore reasonable decision making for abandonment, repair and alternation for loss of monitoring devices would be needed through the establishment of key instrument for earth and rockfill dam safety. In this study the process of monitoring for safety were modeled by failure modes of dams, adverse conditions related to failure mode, indicators of adverse condition and monitoring devices The relationship between failure mode and monitoring devices were systematically analyzed and established and evaluation technique for qualifying the importance of monitoring devices were presented.

  • Two seismic response data from the CSMIP strong motion instrumentation of Pacoima dam are selected: San Fernando earthquake (Jan 13, 2001; ML=4.3) and Newhall earthquake (Sept. 1, 2011; ML=4.2), for the identification of the dam system. To consider the spatially nonuniform input ground motion along the dam abutment, the subspace identification technique with multiple-input and multiple-output is used to extract the dynamic behavior of the dam-reservoir interaction system. It is observed that the dam-reservoir interaction is significant from the identification of San Fernando earthquake data. The influence of added mass (from the reservoir) during strong ground motion will create a tuned-mass damper phenomenon on the dam body. The fundamental frequency of the dam will be tuned to two different frequencies but with the same mode shapes. As for the small earthquake event, the dam-reservoir interaction is insignificant.
