Effect of Rumen-protected Choline Addition on Milk Performance and Blood Metabolic Parameters in Transition Dairy Cows

  • This work was conducted to study the effect of rumen-protected choline (RPC) addition on milk performance and blood metabolic parameters in transition dairy cows. In Experiment 1, fourteen Chinese Holstein dairy cows were supplemented with 0 or 20 g/d of RPC from 7 d before expected calving to 21 d post partum. Feeding of RPC tended to increase milk yield and milk protein percentage, while milk fat and lactose percentage were not changed. Plasma concentrations of glucose tended to increase as cows consumed RPC, while plasma concentrations of triglycerides, very low density lipoproteins, cholesterol and nonesterified fatty acids were not significantly different between the two groups. In Experiment 2, thirty-six Chinese Holstein dairy cows were supplemented with 0, 30, 60 or 90 g/d RPC from 15 d before expected calving to 15 d post partum. Feeding of RPC tended to increase yield of milk and 4% fat-corrected milk for all the lactating cows, and milk composition was similar among the four groups. Plasma concentrations of glucose were remained at a higher level in 30 or 60 g/d RPC-supplemented groups, and nonesterified fatty acids were decreased in the 30 g/d group. Concentrations of triglycerides tended to reduce in 30 and 90 g/d RPC-supplemented animals, and cholesterol was reduced in 0 or 30 g/d group. These results suggest that RPC addition tended to increase milk yield and improve blood metabolic parameters during transition dairy cows, and feeding 30 g/d of RPC may be the optimal.

  • Bacterial contamination negatively affects the quality, functionality, and safety of dairy products. Adherent populations of bacteria, referred to as biofilms, grow on the surfaces of dairy processing equipment and are the primary cause of dairy contamination. In addition, microorganisms present in the farm environment and dairy factory can contaminate the Clear-In-Place (CIP) line through raw milk transport pipes; therefore, exhaustive management is required. In dairy manufacturing facilities, biofilm formation is controlled using CIP systems that primarily require sodium hydroxide and nitric acid. However, the leakage or incomplete removal of these potently active compounds can be harmful to humans. In the present study, we compared the eradication of Escherichia coli and other bacteria using commercially available combinations of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and citric acid, which are recognized by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) as food disinfectants. When considered in the CIP system of the field manufacturing process, E. coli was not detected (compared to detection before treatment), and other bacteria were detected at 0-32 culture-forming units (CFU)/cm2. The residual amount of chlorine ions after CIP treatment was similar to that in tap water, and there was no significant difference in the overall components of the fermented dairy products. Therefore, the NaClO/citric acid CIP system can be safely applied in dairy manufacturing processes.

  • In March 2015, the milk quota system in Europe that had lasted for more than 30 years was abolished to improve the competitiveness of the European dairy sector in the international market. Despite an increase in the consumption of dairy products in Europe, the milk price is expected to stabilize in the next decade after a decrease between 2015 and 2016. This stabilization of prices will be caused by a significant increase in production, with the proportion exceeding domestic demand to be exported. In the international market, the price of milk will reduce in the next decade, leading to a restructuring of the milk sector with a lower number of farms, but with higher production and efficiency. Mountain farms will follow the same trend, although these farms play an important social role by providing ecosystem services such as maintaining cultural services, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting soil stability, and improving the aesthetic value of the landscape. Nevertheless, they remain at a disadvantage compared with lowland farms. To prevent the loss of mountain farms, there is thus a need to valorize the ecosystem services that they provide and promote the processing of milk into certified products of high quality.

Comparison of 5 Staining Methods for Somatic Cells in Dairy Goat Milk Samples (젖염소 유즙에 적용한 5가지 체세포 염색 방법의 비교)

  • This study was performed to investigate the best staining method for the somatic cell classification of dairy goat milk. Dairy goat milk samples, which were collected randomly from a dairy goat farm in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, were stained and analyzed with direct microscopic method, using 5 different staining methods; Wright's stain, Giemsa stain, Diff-quik stain, Newman's stain and Pyronin Y-Methyl Green stain, respectively. Among them, The Newman's staining was found to be the most rapid and effective method, for it required the shortest time for staining and provided the easiest way to classify somatic cells.

Scientific Consideration in Determining Shelf Life of Market Milk (시유의 유통기간 결정에 관한 학문적 고찰)

  • The shelf lift of market milk should be determined based on the flavor which is influenced by environmental and sanitary conditions of dairy farm, milk processing plant, and storage and transportation facility as well as compositional quality, such as protein and fat, of the milk itself. The legal shelf life of market milk is often limited by microbiological quality, e.g. total bacterial count, coliform count, and food poisoning bacteria. The bacteria involved with milk spoilage and poisoning are originated from bacteria contaminating milk after pasteurization or spores surviving the heat treatment of pasteurization. The important factors which influence the shelf life of market milk are microbiological quality of raw milk, pasteurization condition, post-pasteurization contamination, and temperature during storage and transportation. The organoleptic quality and shelf life of market milk should be further improved by satisfying the consumer's taste, which depends on somatic cell count and bacterial count of milk, feed quality, foreign substance in milk, and physical treatment during processing and transportation.

FODDER PRODUCTION AT SAVAR DAIRY FARM: AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

  • Asia Triple HIn this study an attempt was made to determine the cost of producing fodders at Savar Dairy Farm (SDF). For this purpose, all seasonal fodders, such as Maize, Jowar, Cowpea and Oat and all perennial fodders, such as Para and Napier were studied. The highest acreage of land was allocated to high-land Para (33.8%) and the lowest acreage (2.7%) was devoted to Cowpea. Jowar attained the highest yield (74.2 tons) per hectare and Maize attained the lowest yield (25.8 tons/h). The highest cost per hectare was attributed to Jowar (TK. 20944.18) while the lowest cost was attributed to low-land para (TK. 10349.86). The cost of production of fodder per kilogram was the highest (TK. 0.66) for Maize and the lowest for Oat (TK. 0.24). The cost of production of low-land Para was much lower than that of high land Para. The per kilogram cost of silage production was the highest (TK. 0.71) for Maize and the lowest (TK. 0.31) was for Napier. The gross return analysis further showed that the highest net margin and B:C ratio were observed for Napier followed by Low-land Para, Jowar, Oat, Cowpea, High-land Para and Maize. Therefore, those fodders whose B:C ratios and yield/ha were higher should be allocated more area of land to stimulate increased returns to SDF in the future is suggested.

Cheese Consumption: A Nationwide Survey of Korean Women aged 25 Years and Older (치즈 소비 행태에 대한 소비자 조사)

  • To gain insight on cheese consumption and develop strategies for the cheese industry, we conducted a survey of 742 women (age 25 or older) who were responsible for purchasing food for their families. Of them, 49.5% consumed cheese more than once a week and 25.1% expected that the cheese consumption of their families would increase, whereas only 7.1% expected a decrease in consumption. The most important considerations for purchasing cheese were taste and price. Of the respondents, 40.6% purchased domestic cheese, whereas 49.1% were unconcerned about the country of origin. Of them, 20.6% had experience of purchasing farm-made cheese, and 62.7% of them were satisfied with the cheese. These results suggest that cheese consumption will increase in the future, and that with attention to quality improvement and advertising, domestic farm-made cheese consumption could increase accordingly.

Penile Translocation Surgery of a Calf for Exact and Quick Detection of Estrus on a Dairy Farm (유우목장에서 빠르고 정확한 발정탐지를 위한 숫송아지의 음경전위술)

  • A surgery of penile translocation was performed on a seven-month-old male calf born in August 26, 2007. With a penis deviated, as to prevent proper coitus on a dairy farm, the calf would be introduced to the group of cows and heifers before sniffing around to detect which one is in heat and to indicate to a veterinarian the right time for artificial insemination or embryo transfer. This study showed how to make a teaser bull in his young age.

Resistance on disinfectants of Clostridium chauvoei isolated from Kyongbuk province (경북지역에서 분리된 기종저균의 소독제에 대한 내성)

  • This study was investigated resistance on disinfectants and antibiotics of Clostridium chauvoei isolated from dairy farm in Kyongbuk province. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; C chauvoei isolated from dairy farm were susceptible to norfloxacin, penicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, enrofloxacin, bacitracin, tyrosine, cephalothin and cefazolin but resistant to gentamicin, kanamycin, sulfamethoxazole+trimethoprim, amikacin, neomycin streptomycin, colistin. In effect on disinfectants, C chauvoei was inhibited completely to growth in mercuric bichloride ($HgCl_2$), harasol(sodium hypochloride 4-6%), long-life(high boiling tar acids et al), and phenol($C_6$$H_5$OH), but growth in all-stop(didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride 10%), powercide(potassium monopersulphate 50% et al), antec vercon-s(triple salt 50% et al), and taego-51(6-alkyl-2.6-diaza-hexane-carbonic acid-1ㆍHCl et al). The effect of disinfectant was excellent in mercuric bichloride and harasol.

Mounting Activity Detection of Cows by Radiotelemetry (무선원격측정에 의한 소의 승가행위 검출)

  • To increase the production efficiency in dairy industry, proper artificial insemination is the most important operation. For the successful artificial insemination, accurate estrus detection is required. The Korean dairy farmers usually depended on visual observation for estrus detection of cows. Mounting behaviour is one of major inidications observed when cows are at an estrus. A mounting activity detection system for cows using radiotelemetry was developed. This system included a transmitter with a pressure switch, a receiver, a serial communication interface, a personal computer and a computer software. All components and a whole system were tested both in a laboratory and in a farm. The results of this study are as follows: 1. All components including transmitter, receiver and serial interface were operated according to the design specification. 2. A whole system tested with simulated mounting activity of 400 times showed 100% of success rate. 3. In the farm test for 4 days with three cows expecting estrus, one cows experiencing mounting activities showed correct response with this system. However two cows did not show mounting activities because of weak estrus and cold weather during the testing period.
