  • At the current of the time, the ecologic stream is the most important concern of all the country. Daejeon metropolitan city performing the plan to secure the Daejeon cheon (stream) instream water as the 1st stage of the ecologic stream development plan for the Daejeon 3 main stream. During the performing the plan to secure the Daejeon cheon (stream) instream water, the water sources are decided to supply from Yudeng cheon and Daecheong Dam by the various water sources evaluation. For the investigation of flow and quality of instream water, I applicate the HEC-RAS and QUAL2EU. Instream water is proposed as the $10{\sim}30cm$ water depth and 2 degree water quality (lower the BOD 2.0 ppm) by the report of city. It is reasonable to the water depth objective, but the water quality objective is not reasonable because of the seasonal quality changes of supplied water. I suggest that the basin management plan include the non-point source elimination must comprised to the Daejeon ecologic stream project.

  • In this study, the hydrochemical and the isotopic characteristics of major streams in the Daejeon area were investigated during rainy and dry seasons. The stream water shows the electrical conductivity of the range of $37{\sim}527{\mu}s$/cm, and pH $6.21{\sim}9.83$. The chemical composition of stream waters can be grouped as three types: the upper streams of Ca(Mg)-$HCO_3$ type, Ca(Mg)-$SO_4(Cl)$ type of middle streams flowing through urban area, and Na(Ca)-$HCO_3$(Cl, $SO_4$) type of the down streams. Based on in-situ investigation, the high pH of stream waters flowing through urban area is likely to be caused by the inflow of a synthetic detergent discharging from the apartment complex. The electrical conductivity of stream waters at a dry season is higher than those of at a rainy season. We suggest that the hydro-chemical composition of stream waters in the Daejeon area was affected by the discharging water from the sewage treatment facilities and anthropogenic contaminants as well as the interaction with soil and rocks. ${\delta}D$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of the stream waters show the relationship of ${\delta}D=6.45{\delta}^{18}O-7.4$, which is plotted at a lower area than global meteoric water line(GMWL) of Craig(1961). It is likely that this isotopic range results from the evaporation effect of stram waters and the change of an air mass. The isotope value shows an increasing trend from upper stream to lower stream, that reflects the isotopic altitude effect. The relationship between ${\delta}^{13}C$ and $EpCO_2$ indicates that the carbon as bicarbonate in stream water is mainly originated from $CO_2$ in the air and organic materials. The increasing trend of ${\delta}^{13}C$ value from upper stream waters to lower stream waters can be attributed to the following reasons: (1) an increasing dissolution of $CO_2$ gas from a contaminated air in downtown area of the Daejeon, and (2) the increment of an inorganic carbon of groundwater inflowed into stream by base flow. Based on the relationship between ${\delta}^{34}S$ and $SO_4$ of stream waters, the stream waters can be divided into four groups. $SO_4$ content increases as a following order: upper and middle Gab stream${\delta}^{34}S$ value decreases as above order. ${\delta}^{34}S$ value indicates that sulfur of stream waters is mainly originated from atmosphere, and is additionally supplied by pyrite source according to the increase of sulfate content. The sulfur isotope analysis of a synthetic detergent and sewage water as a potential source of the sulfur in stream waters is furtherly needed.

  • This study was conducted to identify the impact of river improvement efforts by studying terrestrial insects inhabiting at streamside locations at the Daejeon and Yudeung streams. Seven surveys were conducted from April to October on 2008 and the results were analyzed. Totally 428 species of 110 families belonging to 11 orders of insects were investigated during the course of the present study. The insects identified at the Daejeon stream belonged to 335 species, 99 families and 11 orders, while those at the Yudeung stream were of 350 species, with 98 families and 11 orders. At the Daejeon stream, D-1 and D-2 points were the sites where the most species(178 species) were identified, while at the Yudeung stream, the Y-1 point was the site where the most species(179 species) emerged. In a cluster analysis based on a similarity index, Group A(without river improvement works) and Group B(downtown passing area with river improvement works) were created. Within Group A, survey points were classified as the Daejeon stream group(the A-1 Group) and the Yudeung stream group(the A-2 Group). It was found that the emergence patterns of insects were related to regional characteristics of the streams.

  • This work carried out to analyze the physicochemical properties and investigate the assessment of heavy metal contamination of stream sediments of the Yudeung and the Gab streams in the Daejeon area. The pH of stream sediments of the Yudeung stream shows the range of weak acid and weak alkaline. Most of stream sediments contain about 80% sand grain and have low water and cation retention capacity. Hence the stream sediments are not suitable fur various plans to grow up. The analysis of heavy metals in the stream sediments shows that the concentration of Pb, Cr and Cd increases from upstream to down stream. It is likely that the trend has a relationship with the water. Contamination of stream water. The authors recommend that clay materials be replenished in the stream sediments to increase the self-purification capacity and to make the suitable condition for growing up of various plants, and that water quality of the stream which can Influence into the contamination of stream sediments be monitored.

  • This study focused on evaluating the efficiency of the removal of non-point source pollution by Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream constructed wetlands. The constructed wetland system is a surface flow type designed in the year 2007 for purifying eutrophic water of Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream. The value of conductivity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand using a potassium permanganate($COD_{Mn}$), five-day biochemical oxygen demand($BOD_5$), total nitrogen(T-N), total phosphorous(T-P), and pH in inflow averaged 220.2, 2.46, 3.33, 1.34, 2.00, 0.04 mg/L and 7.24, respectively and in outflow averaged 227.9, 1.12, 3.34, 0.87, 1.16, 0.02 mg/L and 7.45, respectively. The average removal efficiency of constructed wetlands was 30 % for SS, 22 % for $BOD_5$, 45 % for T-N and 31 % for T-P. The removal rates of SS, $BOD_5$ and T-N in the spring, summer and autumn were higher than those in winter. The removal rate of T-P was not significant different in all seasons. The amounts of pollutants removal in the constructed wetlands were higher in the order of $3^{rd}$ < $2^{nd}$ < $1^{st}$ wetland for SS and T-P, $2^{nd}$ < $3^{rd}$ < $1^{st}$ wetland for $BOD_5$ and T-N. Therefore, our findings suggest that the constructed wetlands could well treat the eutrophic Daecheong Lake Juwon Stream waters.

  • This study was conducted from April, 2002 to March 2006, using three urban streams(Gap Stream, Yudeung Stream and Daejeon Stream) in Daejeon Metropolitan City. 12,027 individual birds summed by the peak count in 126 species, 34 families, and 13 orders were observed from three stream sites. Dominant species were of Anas poecilorhyncha, Anas crecca, Columba livia, Passer montanus, and Egretta garzetta(in that order). The groups of birds were classified into six types. The most frequent group were the arbor birds(54 species), while the smallest group was the diving ducks(7 species). As for the number of individuals, the shrub bird group had 721 individuals while the dabbling ducks observed had 4,974 individuals. Regarding the distribution of birds appeareing in each stream, 14,885 individual numbers in 114 species were observed at Gap Stream, 6,642 individuals in 90 species at Yudeung Stream and 4,202 individuals in 69 species at Daejeon Stream. Various indices of the birds were analyzed with respects to the similarities between streams. Gap Stream had similar characteristics to Yudeung Stream, and the latter was similar to Daejeon Stream. However, Gap Stream and Daejeon Stream showed different characteristics. The dominance index of each section was calculated using ten dominant bird species top-down. Subsequently, the birds and their preferred environment were analyzed. The results showed that shrub birds and arbor birds preferred the upper stream of every stream, while herons and dabbling ducks inhabited the midstream. Dabbling ducks and some diving ducks appeared downstream.

  • Increased impervious surfaces alter stream hydrology resulting in lower flows during droughts and higher peak flows during floods. Not only urban area but also rural area has been expanded impervious surfaces because of increasing of greenhouses. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the AnnAGNPS (Annualized Non-Point Source Pollution Model) on the surface runoff characteristics of the Daejeon-Stream watershed, and to predict the hydrological effects due to increasing of impervious surfaces. The model parameters were obtained from the geographical information system (GIS) databases, and additional parameters calibrated with the observed data. The model was calibrated by using 2004 of the runoff data and validated by using 2002 data obtained from WAMIS (Water Management Information System) to compare the simulated results for the study watershed. R2 values and efficiency index (EI) between observed and simulated runoff were 0.78 and 0.80, respectively at the calibration period. In this study, expanding of impervious surfaces such as greenhouses caused increasing of surface runoff, but caused decreasing of total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads.

  • In this study, the characteristics of water quality change of the three streams in Daejeon were analyzed according to the expanded installation of interceptors and wastewater treatment plant (WTP). Gabcheon 5 (Singu Bridge) location showed the maximum difference of the highest and lowest concentrations in the last decade. However, the recent water quality of this location was worse than other locations, because of the impact of the effluent from the WTP. In the upstream of the WTP, the Daejeon stream was relatively better than the other locations in organic pollution reduction, and this was caused by the investment for the management of the interceptors in three streams of Daejeon. According to the water quality standard of the stream water quality, the recent water quality of the three streams in Daejeon was acceptable within them in the most of the water quality items, but because the total phosphorus concentration of the upstream such as Daejeon stream, Yudeng stream, Gabchen 3 location did not reach the standard values, a better management of the interceptor was required in the upstream of WTP than its downstream. The upstream of WTP also required a better management of the interceptor than the downstream. The operation and management of WTP was required a high efficiency because the water quality of the effluent from the WTP incurred an adverse effect to the target water quality in the location of the total water pollution load management system.

  • This study investigated the acidification and mixing with seawater of groundwater, stream water, and reservoir water in the Hunghae area of Pohang City, as well as the source of water expelled to the stream by liquefaction induced by the Pohang earthquake on 15 November 2017. Geologically, the area consists of Tertiary sedimentary rocks. We collected six samples of groundwater, five of reservoir water, four of stream water, two of liquefaction water, and one of seawater to analyze the chemical composition and stable isotopes (𝛿D and 𝛿18O). Gogkang Stream flows eastward through the central part of the study area into the East Sea. The groundwater and reservoir water in the lower part of the stream are acidic (pH < 4), have a Ca(Mg)-SO4 composition, and high concentrations of Al, Fe, and Mn, likely due to the oxidation of pyrite in Tertiary rocks. The groundwater in the upper part of the stream have a Ca(Na)-HCO3(Cl) composition, indicating the mixing of seawater with the stream water. The 𝛿D and 𝛿18O isotope data indicate the isotopic enrichment of reservoir water by evaporation. Based on the chemical and isotopic data, it is inferred that the two samples of liquefaction water originated from alluvium water in a transition zone with stream water, and from deep and shallow groundwaters that has been infiltrated by seawater, respectively.
