  • Korean folk medicine 'JoRitDae' has been used mainly to cure vomiting and cancer. With regard to the botanical origin of 'JoRitDae', it has been considered to designate the rhizome of Sasa species (Gramineae), but there was no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of 'JoRitDae', the anatomical characteristics of the rhizome of Sasa species growing wild in Korea and Japan, Sasa borealis, S, kurilensis, S. quelpaertensis, S. charatacea and S. senanensis were studied. As a result, it was found the morphological criteria for the five Sasa species that could discriminate them by the number of cell layers in cortex, the ratio of thickness of cortex to rhizome radius, the number of cell layers in the vascular bundle sheath, the total number of vascular bundle and thickness of vascular bundle sheath. According to these criteria, it was clarified that the commercial folk medicine 'JoRitDae' was the rhizome of Sasa borealis.

The improvement of patient was measured every other week by Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS), Modified Bathel Index(MBI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS). Results : We observed the patient decrease in NIHSS score and increase in GCS and MBI. Symptoms of patient such as semi-coma were improved following the treatment. Conclusions : It is suggested that oriental medical treatment; scalp acupuncture with electric stimulation, herbal medication and physical therapy were effective in semi-coma caused by traumatic brain injury.

  • Oculomotor nerve palsy causes ptosis, limitation of eye movement, diplopia, and facial pain. Despite imaging investigation, the cause of the palsy cannot be established in most cases. We treated a patient with idiopathic oculomotor nerve palsy with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Korean medical physical therapy. In this case, the symptoms remarkably improved after 28 days of treatment. This case report suggests that traditional Korean medicine is effective in treating ptosis and limitation of eye movement diagnosed as idiopathic oculomotor nerve palsy.

A 57-year-old male patient was treated with acupuncture, electropuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping treatments for 2 months. Symptom changes were evaluated using the Scott and Kraft score, photographs of eyeball movement, and the Yanagihara score. Korean medicine treatment significantly improved the eye movements, ncreased the Scott and Kraft score from -4 to 0, and improved the Yanagihara score from 20 to 32. Korean medicine treatment could effectively and quickly treat Ophthalmoplegia of Miller-Fisher Syndrome.

  • This paper discuss the conditionally sampled actual wind pressure distributions causing peak quasi-static wind loads in the large span roofs using the wind pressures at many locations on dome models measured simultaneously in a wind tunnel. The actual extreme pressure distributions are compared itk load-response-correlation (LRC) method and the quasi-steady pressure distributions. Based on the results, the reason for the discrepancy in the LRC pressure distribution and the actual extreme pressure distribution are discussed. Futhermore, a brief discussion is made of the equivalent static wind load estimation for the large span roofs.

  • Objectives : To explore the adverse events and safety following facial cosmetic acupuncture treatment (Miso-Acupuncture). Subjects and methods : This study was a retrospective survey of practitioner's reports. The practitioners worked as facial cosmetic acupuncturists, gave informed consent, and completed a case report form between July and November of 2007. On this form, practitioners were asked to report the degree of adverse events relating to the Miso-Acupuncture, the total safety of the treatment, and reasons patients gave for quitting treatment. The practitioners in this study were all Oriental Medicine Doctors(OMD) who had trained at the Miso-Acupuncture Academy for 40 hours we received 23 final report cases. Results : In this study, adverse events following Miso-Acupuncture treatment were mild bruising(15 ; 65.2%), bleeding(12 ; 52.2%), pain(8 ; 34.8%), fatigue(7 ; 30.4%), headache(5 ; 21.7%), and others(10 ; 43.5%). The average degree of adverse events was between mild and moderate, which needs no extra treatment. The total safety of treatment for 16 weeks was between safe and nearly safe, and there was no need to quit treatment in spite of mild adverse events. Eight patients(34.8%) quit treatment, almost all for personal reasons unrelated to the Miso-Acupuncture. Conclusions : These results suggest that the Miso-Acupuncture has no serious adverse events and is a relatively safe treatment.
