  • This paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of Korean vowel production by 12 Korean native speakers and 36 adult learners. The analyses have been performed with investigations of F1and F2 values. Results showed that there's no significant difference between /ㅔ/ and /H/ and between /ㅗ/ and /ㅜ/ in Korean native speakers' pronunciations. The distinguishing tendencies found in the analyses of foreign learners' pronunciations are fronting and lowering of /ㅗ/ by English speakers, backing and heightening of /ㅓ/ by Japanese speakers and backing and lowering of /ㅏ/ by Chinese speakers. For the limitations of this paper, it has a meaning of a preliminary study and could be developed into further research to show the order of acquisition and L1 transference.

  • A deoxyriboendonuclease has been purified to near homogeneity from a fast growing mycobacterium species, M. smegmatis and characterized to some extent. The size of enzyme is about 43 kDa as determined by a denaturing gel analysis. It shows optimum activity at $32^{\circ}C$ in Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.2) containing 2.5 mM of $MgCl_2$. Both EDTA and $K^+$ but not $Na^+$ inhibit its activity. Evidences show that the enzyme is not a restriction endonuclease but catalyzes the endonucleolytic cleavage of both the double- as well as the single-strand DNA non-specifically. It has been shown that the cleavage by this enzyme generates DNA fragments carrying phosphate groups at 5' ends and hydroxyl group at the 3' ends, respectively. Analysis reveals that no endonuclease having size and property identical to our deoxyriboendonuclease had been purified from M. smegmatis before. The property of our enzymes closely matches with the deoxyriboendonucleases purified from diverse sources including bacteria.

  • Poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide), m-aramid has no adjacent $\alpha$-hydrogen of a nitrogen-halogen bond causes dehydrohalogenation. This fact proposes that m-aramid is one of good antimicrobial precursors. To enhance the surface area of m-aramid, electrospinning was employed. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was conducted to inspect the morphology change of m-aramid. The surface area of regular and electrospun m-aramid was calculated. Swatch test was applied to measure antimicrobial activity of the samples. The results showed that within 10 min contact time the electrospun m-aramid inactivated Escherichia coli KCTC 1039 (Gram-negative bacteria) with 8 log reductions.

  • Role of enterotoxin from Salmonella in pathogenesis is not know. Enterotoxin gene from Salmonella typhimurium(stn) encodes a 29kDa toxin that has no homology to any other known enterotoxins. Expression of stn is enthanced upon contact with epithelial cell but not all strains having the stn gene express Stn, Based on PCR analysis, we found that all 36 clinical strains of Salmonella isolated in Korea tested carried the stn gene. To understand the trgulation of the stn transcription, the expression of stn was studies in vitro. RNA polymerase was purified by polymin P fraction-ation, DNA-agarose affinity chromatography, and Mono-Q ion exchange chromatography from Salmonella. The expression of stn was inhibited by cAMP·CRP complex by about 50%.

  • Chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) were prepared and fractionated into three groups of COS [a high molecular weight COS (HMWCOS), medium molecular weight COS (LMWCOS), and low molecular weight COS (LMWCOS)] according to their molecular weight, using an ultrafiltration membrane enzymatic bioreactor designed earlier [8]. Antitumor activity of these COSs was then examined against Sarcoma 180 solid (S180) or Uterine cervix carcinoma No. 14 (Ul4) tumor cell-bearing mice. Among these COSs, MMWCOS with molecular weight range from 1.5 to 5.5 kDa effectively inhibited the growth of both tumor cells in the mice. In addition, the administration of MMWCOS resulted in increased thymus weight among lymphoid organs. The mice treated with MMWCOS showed improved survival rate and larger number of survivors after 40 days of feeding. The most effective of MMWCOS far antitumor activity in the S180- or U14-bearing mice was 20 mg/kg/day or more.

  • For the purpose of developing a new biodegradable detergent, we have isolated a gene encoding wide-range temperature applicable alkaline protease from Xanthomonas sp. YL-37 (Lee et al., 1994, Kor. J. Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol.). An alkaline protease gene was isolated from the gene bank that was prepared from the chromosomal DNA of Xanthomonas sp. YL-37. From the results of agarose gel electrophoresis and a restriction enzyme mapping, a 2.7 kb DNA fragment containing the alkaline protease gene was inserted in the plasmid pUC9. Extracellular activity of a clone having alkaline protease gene was detected on SDS-polyacrylamide gel with activity staining assay. The molecular weight of alkaline protease was determined to be about 64 kDa from 11% SDS-PAGE analysis. Alkaline protease activity, produced from E. coli which harboring the plasmid, showed no difference at reaction temperature 20, 30 and 40$\circ$C, respectively. This result showed that alkaline protease produced from E. coli harboring the plasmid was apparently the same as that of Xanthomonas sp. YL-37.

  • Alismatis Rhizoma has been used as diuretics and antiphlogistics in the Chinese oriental medicine. A trypsin inhibitor was isolated from Alismatis Rhizoma using DEAE ion exchange column, trypsin affinity column, and FPLC chromatography, and its activity and characteristics were studied. The purifed Alismatis Rhizoma trypsin inhibitor (ARTI) was estimated to be about 22 kDa. The sequence determination on N-terminal amino acid residues and 84 amino acid residues has been completed, yet no homology has been found with trypsin inhibitors reported at NCBI. ARTI did not show inhibitory activities on chymotrypsin and elastase, however it exhibited a significant inhibitory activity on bovine trypsin, and formed a complex with rat liver 10-formyltetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase.

  • Robotic surgery have been increasingly applied in the past several years to assist in a variety of operations. Some applications, such as in prostatectomy, have been widely adopted and have largely supplanted the alternative minimally invasive or open techniques. However, the use of surgical robots in esophagectomy has not been as common. Although a limited number of case reports demonstrated the feasibility of robotic esophagectomy, no large series of patients has been reported to date. The data on robotic-assisted esophagectomy suggest that the procedure is safe, feasible, and associated with perioperative outcomes similar to open and minimally invasive esophagectomy. Benefits of robotic system could be maximized when we do a extensive total mediastinal lymphadenectomy. For this procedure to gain widespread acceptance, identifiable benefit relative should be demonstrated in near future.

  • Analysis of the Neurospora crassa genome data reveals at least 14 proteins that contain tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs. One of them shows over $60\%$ homology with SSN6 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a global repressor that mediates repression of genes involved in various cellular processes. Sequence analysis of its cDNA shows that it encodes a putative 102kDa protein. Mutant strains generated by RIP (repeat induced point mutation) process show four distinctive patterns of vegetative growth at various rates. They are male-fertile, yet all female-sterile and produced little or no perithecium. These results indicate that this gene is pleiotropic and involved in several cellular processes of vegetative growth, conidiation and sexual cycle. It is designated rcm-1(regulation of conidiation and morphology).

  • Fibrinolytic enzyme was purified from the fruiting bodies of Lepista nuda, using DEAE-Cellulose chromatography, Phenyl Sepharose chromatography, and Mono-S column chromatography. The substance has a molecular weight of 30006.62 Da as measured by MALD-TOF mass spectrometry. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the enzyme was Tyr-Pro-Ser-Pro-Ser-His-Gln-Thr-Ala-Val-Asn-Ala-Ile-Ile-X. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by PMSF, indicating that the enzyme is a serine protease. No inhibition was found with E-64, pepstatin, and EDTA. It has broad substrate specificity for synthetic peptides. The enzyme was stable up to $30^{\circ}C$. The enzyme hydrolyzes both Aa and y chains of human fibrinogen but did not show any reactivity for $B{\beta}$ chain of human fibrinogen.
