  • Recently, wide spread distribution of the giant jellyfish, Nemopilema nomurai, has occurred in the East China Sea. This increased distribution has caused serious problems in inshore and offshore fisheries in Korea and Japan. As a result, it is necessary to evaluate the damage caused to the fisheries by jellyfish. Accordingly, several hydroacoustic studies have been conducted to estimate the target strength (TS) of the giant jellyfish. However, the effects of fluctuation in the acoustic scattering characteristics on swimming patterns have not yet been elucidated. Therefore, in this study, we theoretically estimated the effects of changes in the acoustic scattering pattern on the swimming behavior of jellyfish using the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) model. The results confirmed that acoustic scattering of jellyfish results in a significant change in their swimming pattern. Specifically, our theoretical estimation indicated that the TS of giant jellyfish (d=40 cm) fluctuated until 8.5 dB at 38 kHz, 13.8 dB at 70 kHz, and 15.1 dB at 120 kHz based on changes in their swimming patterns.

  • Assessment and management of fisheries abundance in fresh water like a river or a lake is very important to maintain fisheries itself as well as tourist industry even if their scale is not much large. The species for catch in fresh water are mainly a mandarin fish, a carp, an eel, and others. Because oriental river prawn is a main prey of these species and the change in its abundance is directly related to their abundance change in fresh water, information on the abundance and distribution of the species are necessary. Hydroacoustic survey is known to one of the efficient method among several methodology. Information on acoustic target strength is key parameter to estimate abundance for acoustic survey. In this study, measurements on oriental river prawn, Macrobrachium koreana, were conducted for two high frequencies(200kHz and 420kHz) with tilt angle using automatic rotating system. The results of acoustic target strength obtained from the experiment were compared with those of acoustic scattering model, Distorted Wave Born Approximation(DWBA) model. For 200kHz, the result of acoustic target strength experiments was expressed in terms of the averaged target strength dependence on the body langth(BL, cm) as a following relationship; < $TS_{200kHz}$ > = 45.9log(BL) - 107.4. These results provide basic information for studying acoustic target strength and conducting acoustic survey of oriental river prawn.

  • The jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai has occurred in large numbers in Japan and Korea and has had on a negative effect on coastal fisheries in this region. Data on the abundance and distribution of jellyfish are needed to forecast when and where they will occur in coastal areas. Acoustic techniques are commonly used to study the distribution and abundance of fish and zooplankton. However before such surveys can be conducted, the acoustic characteristics of the target species must be known. In this study, the density of and speed-of-sound in jellyfish were measured to clarify their acoustic characteristics using a theoretical scattering model. The acoustic characteristics were estimated with the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) model using these material properties and the shape of free-swimming jellyfish.

  • We study the uncertainty stemming from different theoretical models in the spectroscopic factors extracted from experiments. We use three theoretical approaches, the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA), the adiabatic distorted wave approximation (ADWA) and the continuum discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC), and analyze the $^{12}C(d,p)^{13}C$, $^{14}C(d,p)^{15}C$ reactions. We find that the uncertainty associated with the adopted theoretical models is less than 20%. We also investigate the contribution from the remnant term and observe that it gives less than 10% uncertainty. We finally make an attempt to explain the discrepancy in the spectroscopic factors of $^{17}C(\frac{3}{2}^+)$ between the ones extracted from experiments and from shell model calculations by analyzing the $^{16}C(d,p)^{17}C$ reaction.

  • Acoustic target strength (TS) measurement and theoretical acoustic scattering models were applied to estimate the TS for assessing the fish biomass. TS measurement was made of ex situ sailfin sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus at 70 and 120 kHz, and then compared to backscatter model prediction. The live sandfish was tethered in seawater using monofilament lines. Measurements were made versus incidence angle, $-50^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$ relative to dorsal aspect directions. Distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model was used to calculated TS pattern. The TS values of sandfish (body length: 16.2 cm) at 70 and 120 kHz were -66.94 dB and -64.45 dB, respectively, and were about 20 dB lower than TS of other fishes in Korea waters. These TS levels were distributed within the range of the theoretical TS. Ex situ measurement and theoretical TS may be applied to improve acoustical detection and biomass estimation of the sandfish, and is necessary to measure with various lengths.

  • Due to change of various marine environments according to seawater temperature rising, Japanese common squid(Todarodes pacificus), which was distributed in East Sea, was recently caught in Yellow Sea during a summer season from 2006. The fishery resources density research was carried out in Korea-China Provisional Water Zone using trawl fishing gear and acoustics in National Fisheries Research & Development Institute in Korea. This paper showed the analysis on the acoustical backscattering strength by two frequencies(38kHz, 120kHz) for Japanese common squid by acoustical scattering theoretical model based on size distribution for survey period, and estimate the density distribution for squid s integrated layer which was extracted from any scatterers distributed in water column using two frequency difference method which has been used to distinguish fish shoals or specific target scatterers from sound scattering layer which is composed of various zooplankton. Furthermore, the entire range of their density estimation was suggested using by Monte Carlo simulation under considering each uncertainty such as size distributions or swimming angle and so on in survey area.

  • Moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea are highly abundant off the coast of Tongyeong, Korea. We measured the density of A. coerulea in this area using a scientific echosounder at frequencies of 38 and 120 kHz, and then applied a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model to calculate the target strength of the echosounder at each frequency. Then, we used the frequency difference method to extract jellyfish echo signals and estimate the A. coerulea density. A. coerulea was evenly distributed throughout the water column; the backscattering strength ranged from -75 to -65 dB. In May and August, the A. coerulea densities at survey lines 3 and 4 were estimated at 1.5-1.6 and 0.2-0.9 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.04 and 0.48 g/m2, respectively. In September, the A. coerulea densities estimates in Jaran Bay and Goseong Bay were 0.6-2.1 and 0.1-0.4 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.25 and 0.24 g/m2, respectively.

  • Hydroacoustic and open-closing zooplankton net survey were conducted to understand the characteristics of the sound scattering layer (SSL) and to estimate the density of an euphausiid (Euphausia pacifica) in the SSL, in the northwestern part of the East China Sea. The survey was carried out during July 6-9 2002 at 8 sampling stations for zooplankton. The virtual echogram technique was used to identify E. pacifica from all acoustic scatters. Mean volume backscattering strength difference $(MVBS_{120kHz-38kHz})$ and target strength equation for E. pacifica were derived from the Distorted-wave Born Approximation (DWBA) model. Although vertical migration of the SSL is similar to the general pattern, dispersion at night shows some differences. Estimated mean density using acoustic data ranged from $20.4-221.4\;mg/m^3$ over the whole depth, and $87.1-553.5\;mg/m^3$ in the SSL. The density using the zooplankton net ranged from $0.2-362.4\;mg/m^3$ and was not related to net deploying method. The results from the acoustic and net survey suggest that E. pacifica might be an important zooplankton community in the northwestern part of the East China Sea.
