Methodology for Measuring the Quality of Three-Dimensional Television (3차원 텔레비전의 품질측정 방법론)

  • Emerging three-dimensional television (3DTV) as a new IT product shows a possibility that television is not for just watching broadcasting, but an attractive tool for applying it to our real life. Three dimensional television is generally more effective and attractive than two-dimensional television (2DTV). But it still needs continuous technological improvement to solve its inherent limitations until many customers decide to purchase 3DTVs without hesitation. Innovative products like 3DTV encounter a quality problem leading purchase decision by customers. Quality is regarded as one of the most important factors affecting customers to adopt and use the product. Furthermore, measuring quality effectively is considerable for the 3DTV research. In this paper, we suggest the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method for evaluating 3DTVs in a view of quality. We describe quality criteria affecting the 3DTV selection through a literature survey and develope an analytical method for measuring quality. We classify the quality of 3DTV into four types and suggest a concept of the quality ratio as a measurement criteria instead of the quality gap. Though a numerical example, we show how priorities of 3DTV with versatile manufacturers is computed.

Quality Verification of Fixed and Mobile Hybrid 3DTV Services via a Subjective Test of Mixed-resolution Stereoscopic Videos (혼합 해상도 양안식 영상에 대한 주관적 화질평가를 통한 고정 및 이동 융합형 3DTV 서비스의 품질 검증)

  • Various techniques have been developed for efficient compression of stereoscopic 3D videos. Mixed-resolution based approach is one representative bit-rate saving method based on the characteristics of human visual system that the mixed-resolution stereoscopic videos are perceived close to the higher resolution. However, when the difference between the left and right image resolutions is bigger than a certain threshold level, it causes the perceived quality degradation of the 3D images. Subsequently, several researches tried to find the correlation between the difference in resolution and the level of the perceived quality degradation, but they conducted the experiments just considering the difference in resolution without considering the viewing distances, so thereby different results were retrieved from test to test. In this work, we calculated the optimal viewing distance based on the human visual system, and conducted the subjective tests with the calculated viewing distance. With the results, we demonstrate that the fixed and mobile hybrid 3DTV, which is based on mixed-resolution stereoscopic images, can provide the high quality 3D services.

  • We analyze mathematically a VSB (vestigial side-band) transceiver system for the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television standard and extract a near-baseband equivalent VSB channel model. This model shows the multi-path fading effect of the quadrature component on the in-phase component. Also, we obtain a simplified model of the VSB transceiver system, which is represented by convolution of the transmission signal (before modulation) and the VSB channel. This simplified model is efficiently used for simulation of VSB systems to improve its performances, especially in an equalization part. Applying the DTV channel specifications tested by the Advanced Television Test Conter (ATTC) to the channel model, we obtain an equivalent VSB channel and show the equalization result by using the conventional derision-feedback equalize (DFE).

Caption Data Transmission Method for HDTV Picture Quality Improvement (DTV 화질향상을 위한 자막데이터 전송방법)

  • Such as closed caption, ancillary data, electronic program guide(EPG), data broadcasting, and etc, increased data for service convenience cause to degrade video quality of high definition contents. This article propose a method to transfer the closed caption data of video contents without video quality degradation. Video quality degradation does not cause in video compression by the block image insertion of caption data in DTV essential hidden area. Additionally the proposed methods have advantage to synchronize video, audio, and caption from preinserted script without time delay.

  • Multi-view video broadcasting have been conducted with a variety of different system architectures. However, the previous systems have focused on wired broadcasting. On the contrary, our system is designed to be applied to mobile 3DTV broadcasting. We present a service framework adaptable to mobile clients where the load on the client is reduced as much as possible. MPEG-21 multiview DIA description schemes are presented for the efficient adaptation between the serer and client. Furthermore, we examine the feasibility of the proposed framework by analyzing the frame rate that a client device can process.

Calculation of Effective Receiving Electric Field Level using the Measurement Analysis from Actual Domestic DTV Environment (국내 디지털 TV방송 환경 측정결과 분석을 통한 효과적인 수신전계강도 산출)

  • Preparing the conversion to the digital broadcasting system, we are deciding broadcasting network plan and interference protection area, using the measured receiving electric field level from the digital broadcasting station. However, the essential researches are needed about a receiving electric field level, because a digital TV (DTV) broadcasting receiver has been improved and an actual receiving environment should be considered. In this paper, the measured data were classified with domestic terrain of line of sight (LOS) and those of non-LOS, and effective receiving electric field level was proposed based on the LOS data. It is known that receiving electric field-level of 48 ㏈uV/m or more should be required for receiving rate of 90% and 50 ㏈uV/m for that of 95%, on the basis of the information of domestic terrain LOS.

  • In this paper, designed scheme and the performance results of implemented Grand alliance DTV RF up-converter are described. It can generate all channel band (ch.2-ch.60) of Korean broadcasting channel band. The experiment result shows the implemented RF up-converter satisfy the ATSC standards.

  • 본 논문에서는 ATSC3.0 기반 UHD 급 고정/이동방송 융합형 3DTV 서비스 시나리오에 대한 내용을 기술한다. ATSC3.0 은 북미지상파 표준화 방송방식의 차세대 지상파서비스 표준으로 2016 년 까지 기술표준 논의완료를 목표로 물리계층, 전송프로토콜계층 및 4K-UHD 서비스를 포함한 응용서비스계층으로 분류하여 표준화 논의 중에 있다. 본 논문에서는 스테레오 스코픽 콘텐츠의 좌/우영상을 각각 고정 TV 채널 및 모바일 TV 채널로 나누어 전송하고 이를 융합형 3DTV 방식을 지원하는 수신기에서 동시에 좌/우영상 신호를 수신하여 3D 영상을 합성하는 방법으로 지상파 DTV 한 채널(6MHz 대역)내에서의 4K-UHD 고정 TV 서비스, 모바일 HD 서비스 및 UHD 3D 서비스를 동시에 제공할 수 있는 고정/이동방송 융합형 3DTV 서비스 방법을 제시한다. 따라서 본 논문에서 제안하는 융합형 3DTV 서비스는 추가적인 3D 부가정보를 전송하지 않고 4K-UHD, 모바일 HD 및 UHD 3D 서비스를 시청자에게 제공 가능하다.

Channel Correlation Analysis using MIMO Channel Measurement Parameters at Domestic 700MHz band (국내 700 MHz 대역에서 MIMO 채널 측정 파라미터를 이용한 채널 상관도 분석)

  • In the next generation of mobile communication systems, high data rates and high capacity will be possible if multiple antennas are used at new frequencies. This paper presents the correlations between channel parameter path loss (PL), delay spread (DS), angular spread (AS) and K-factor established based on channel measurements. To avoid interference from Korean DTV broadcasting, we measured the channel characteristics in urban/rural/suburban areas on Jeju Island using a channel sounder and $4{\times}4$ antennas. The correlations between channel parameter show that the wireless channel characteristics can be determined and effective communication system design can be produced for use in similar environments.
