This study was to conducted to investigate the antioxidative activity of 70% ethanol extracts of kiwi of three different colors (gold, green and red) by measuring DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, tyrosinase inhibitory effect, metal chelating effect, reducing power, and nitrite scavenging activity. Total polyphenol contents were: gold kiwi, 3.09 mg GAE/g, green kiwi 2.71 mg GAE/g, and red kiwi 4.59 mg GAE/g, respectively. Red kiwi showed higher antioxdidant activity than gold and green kiwi. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, and nitrite scavenging activity of red kiwi exhibited 94.83, 99.57, and 97.88%, respectively, at a concentration of 20 mg/mL, which were equal to those of ascorbic acid (positive control). Metal chelating effect of red kiwi was superior to that of ascorbic acid. Therefore, the availability of red kiwi will be increased in the field of functional material for food additives and value added products.
Basil is known to contain six types of polyphenols that engage in physiological activation; protocateuic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, courmaric acid, rosmarinic acid and quercetin. In this study, the antioxidants in eight types of basil were evaluated. Specifically, the antioxidative activation of basil was evaluated based on the relationship between active oxygen scavenging (DPPH radical-scavenging), which was used as an index showing the content and functionality of the polyphenol compounds in basil, and $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate (FTC) and 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA). The total polyphenol content of the different types basil occurred in the following order: Dark-opal> Lettuce> Bush> Greek> Lemon> Sweet> Geno> Holy. The highest content Dark-opal was 173.3 mg, which was about three times greater than the lowest content Holy, which was 49.85 mg. In addition, DPPH radical-scavenging by Dark-opal 51%, which was the highest scavenging activity occurred in the folling order: Dark-opal> Lettuce> Bush> Greek> Lemon> Sweet> Geno> Holy. The antioxidative activation values measured using the FTC and TBA were the same as the value obtained using the DPPH method. Finally, the level of antioxidative activation measured using FTC, TBA and DPPH methods showed that the higher the content of polyphenol substance was, the stronger the antioxidative activation became.

To further the goal of isolating Bacillus sp. from commercial chungkukjang (CKJ) for a development of a probiotic dietary adjunct using soymilk or milk, antioxidant activity of CKJ purchased from the Sunchang Traditional Village in Chunbook province was examined. Six CKJ samples were evaluated and 3 were selected based on the results of the physicochemical analysis and sensory evaluation for further antioxidant study. $IC_{50}$ for DPPH scavenging activity of methanol extracts of CKJ ranged from 238.1 to 345.7 ${\mu}g/mL$. CKJ exhibited over 80% scavenging of ${\cdot}OH$ and ONOO- at concentrations of 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ and 250 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. $O_2^-$ and NO scavenging activities of three CKJ were increased in a dose dependent manner with the concentration tested from 100 to 1000 ${\mu}g/mL$. In this study, the methanol extract of CKJ exhibited a great reduction capability and powerful free radical scavenging activity, especially against OH. and ONOO-, which are the most toxic radicals responsible for oxidative damage in the body. However, radical scavenging effects of CKJ on DPPH, $O_2^-$, and nitrite radical were rather moderate. In conclusion, CKJ may reduce the oxidative stress in the body by scavenging the free radicals.

Investigation of antioxidative constituents from the ethanol extract of Quercus gilva branches led to the identification of four compounds; catechin (1), epi-catechin (2), tyrosol (3) and tiliroside (4). The antioxidative activity was examined using DPPH radical and superoxide anion radical scavenging method. The isolated compounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 exhibited 94.2 %, 93.4 %, 33.6 % and 11.2 % scavenging activities respectively against DPPH radicals at the concentration of $100{\mu}L$/mL. As well, the compounds $1{\sim}4$ showed respectively 60.2 %, 35.1 %, 20.6 %, 4.5 % inhibition activities against superoxide anion radicals at $200{\mu}L$/mL. Interestingly, the compounds $1{\sim}4$ were isolated for the first time from Quercus gilva Blume.
The aim of this study is to compare the total polyphenol, total flavonoid, and antioxidative activity among 5 cultivars of Korean pears cultivated in Korea. As a result of the analysis for the phenolic substance of 5 cultivars, such as Wonwhang, Sunwhang, Whangkeumbae, Chuwhang, and Shingo, the content of total polyphenol was higher in Shingo and Chuwhang, and the content of total flavonoid showed higher levels in Wonwhang and Sunwhang. In addition, this study found that DPPH radical-scavenging ability was the highest in Shingo and that the part of fruit skin showed more favorable reaction to radical ability than fruit flesh. It was also found that much better antioxidative activity was shown for the methanol solvent extraction than for the ethanol solvent extraction. The nitrite-scavenging ability showed the best for Wonwhang and Chuwhang of the cultivars and much better reaction for the methanol solvent extraction than for the ethanol solvent extraction just like the case of DPPH radical-scavenging ability. Further, nitrite-scavenging ability appeared much better reaction for the fruit skin than for the fruit flesh, and antioxidative activity dropped for the higher the range on the pH scale. From the results of this study, Korean pears are worthy of developing as a natural functional food and substance for beauty treatment through the research on bioactivity.
A number of plants from different geographical origins have been shown to possess antioxidant activity. Some of them have been developed as natural antioxidant formulations for food, cosmetic and other applications. Bangladeshi flora is a rich source of a range of plant species, many of which are medicinal plants, and have been used in the preparations of the Unani and Ayurvedic traditional medicines. There are no, or just a few, reports on any systematic screening of the extracts of Bangladeshi plants for free radical scavenging activity using DPPH assay available to date. As part of our on-going search for biological activity in Bangladeshi plants, Kadam (Anthocephalus chinensis), Goran (Ceriaps decandra), Swarnalata (Cuscuta reflexa), Gab (Diospyros peregrina), Sundari (Heritiera fomes), Dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) and Possur (Xylocarpus mekongensis) have been selected for the assessment of their free radical scavenging activity, and studies on the contents of alkaloids, anthraqunones, flavonoids and tannins in these extracts. Most of these species have been used in traditional medicine in Bangladesh and other countries for the treatment of various illnesses ranging from common cold to cancer. All extracts, except the methanol extract of Cuscuta reflexa, displayed significant free radical scavenging activity in the DPPH assay $(RC_{50}$ values within the range of $2.75\;{\times}\;10^{-2}\;to\;4.7\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;mg/mL)$. Among these extracts, the methanol extract of Xylocarpus granatum exhibited the most potent activity $(4.7\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;mg/mL)$ and that of Cuscuta reflexa had the least activity $(1.64\;{\times}\;10^{-1}\;mg/mL)$. While none of these plants showed positive tests with Dragendorff's reagent, presence of low to moderate amounts of phenolic compounds, e.g. anthraquinones, flavonoids and tannins was evident in all of these plants, except for the methanolic extracts of C. reflexa and the barks of D. peregrina, which did not display any evidence for the presence of flavonoids and anthraquinones, respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant effects of O. robusta stem extract (ORE) and to determine the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Free radical scavenging properties were evaluated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), and ·OH (hydroxyl radical) scavenging assays. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. Active compounds of ORE were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results of the study showed that ORE exhibited DPPH, ABTS, and ·OH radical scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, 1,000 ㎍/mL of ORE showed the strongest radical scavenging properties against DPPH, ABTS, and ·OH. ORE contained total polyphenol content of 57.4 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid content of 5.4 mg QE/g, which may contribute to their antioxidant effects. As a result of HPLC, the contents of active compounds in ORE, dihydrokaempferol (0.65 ㎍/mL), and 3-O-methylquercetin (1.10 ㎍/mL) were confirmed. In conclusion, ORE may be useful as a functional material with antioxidant properties.
