  • This study investigates the influence of the developing and decaying El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the relation between typhoon intensity and its formation. From the long-tenn data of 57 years ($1950{\sim}2006$), we first defined the developing El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years and the neutral years. During the developing El Nino years, the typhoon intensity has a strong relationship with formation region of the tropical cyclone, which results in an increase of the accumulated cyclone energy and intensity of energy of typhoon. During the developing El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ year based on $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ 3.4 SST, the locations for the formation of the category 4+5 typhoon move to the eastward region. The genesis potential function and the low-level cyclonic vorticity have an important role on the formation of strong tropical cyclones, which eventually develop as a typhoon class. In this study, the dynamic potential (DP) function (Gray, 1977) and EOF 1 and EOF 2 time series (RMM 1 and RMM 2) of real-time multivariate MJO (Wheeler and Hendon, 2004) are used to measure the genesis potential and the low-level cyclonic vorticity, respectively. To investigate the influence of the developing and decaying ENSO, we defined the Type I case of the decaying El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ that turnovers to La Nina, and the Type II case of the recovering years to the neutral condition. During the decaying El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years as Type I, the locations of the strong DP, RMM 1 and RMM 2 move to the westward more prominently to induce retard of the strong typhoon developing.

  • The HLA class II region encodes a series of polymorphic glycoproteins that form cell surface heterodimers each consisting of one $\alpha$ and one $\beta$ chain. Thess class II molecules are encoded by genes clustered within three loci. DP, DQ, and DR are functfonally implicated as regulatory signals in intercellular communication during the immune resposes. The phenotypic hallmark of the HLA complex is a high degree of structural and functional polymorphism. Detailed analysis. of such polymorphisms should aid in understanding the molecular basis for associations between HLA and diseases. We have used techniques of restriction enzyme fragment analysis by Southern blotting to investigate polymorphisms associated with DQ $\beta$ class II genes on haplotypes expressing the HLA-DR4 and -DQw3 specificities. The endonucleases Hind III and Bam HI were used to identify a specific DQ $\beta$ genomic polymorphism that precisely corrresponds with the reactivity of a monoclonal antibody A-10-83, previously shown to define a serologic split of DQw3. This study identifies two allelic DQ va. riants. DQw3.1 and DQw3.2. We used these specific genotypic markers to investigate the genomic basis of the association of DR4 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus(IDDM) and seropositive juvenile rheumatoid arthritis(JRA). The DR4 positive IDDM demonstrate the predominant expression of DQw3.2 and the very rare expression of DQw3.l. However, in haplotype matched siblings from two IDDM families, all of the DR4 positive siblings display a IDDM-associated DQw3.2 allele. Thus, both affected and healthy individuals can carry the same haplotypes and genomic markers, demonstrating that thess specific allelic variants are genetic elements that indicate a increased risk of IDDM but are not in fact disease specific. We contrasted this result with a similar analysis of patients with another DR4-associated disease, JRA. In contrast to the preponderance of the DQw3.2 allele in IDDM, the JRA patients expressed either the DQw3.1 or the DQw3.2 allele and sometimes both, without apparent association with disease expession. The different genomic markers reported here within HLA-DQ region potentially an analysis of HLA-associated function and disease susceptibility.

  • TSP(Traveling Salesman Problem) is a famous problem in Operations Research fields due to its applicability to various problems. It is also well-known that the problem is hard to solve in reasonable time, since it is in the NP-Complete class. Hence it is desired to develop heuristics which have polynominal complexity and also solve the problem to near-optimality. This paper presents a heuristic algorithm for TSP using the concept of dynamic programming. The proposed method has the complexity of O(N$\^$3/), and gives improved solutions than other well-known algorithms in our extensive computational experiments.

  • Nowadays, most car manufactures have tried to improve fuel efficiency and corrosion resistance of car body. Therefore, use of high strength steels and coated steel becomes more and more increased. In this study, spot weld characteristics according to lap sequence of sheets were analyzed using simulation method for three different steel sheet of car body which were EDDQ class coated steel with 0.7t, high strength steel 440R with 1.2t and advanced high strength steel DP 590 with 1.0t. Using simulation, weldability was evaluated by nugget size of welded zone according to nugget growth curve and welding current with respect to lap sequence of sheets. Contact resistance of each sheets contact point was used to analyze formation of nugget and optimal lap sequence was suggested.

  • Navigation problems include the task of determining the control input under various constraints for systems such as mobile robots subject to uncertain disturbance. Such tasks can be modeled as constrained stochastic control problems. In order to solve these control problems, one may try to utilize the dynamic programming(DP) methods which rely on the concept of optimal value function. However, in most real-world problems, this trial would give us many difficulties; for examples, the exact system model may not be known; the computation of the optimal control policy may be impossible; and/or a huge amount of computing resource may be in need. As a strategy to overcome the difficulties of DP, one can utilize ADP(approximate dynamic programming) methods, which find suboptimal control policies resorting to approximate value functions. In this paper, we apply recently proposed ADP methods to a class of navigation problems having complex constraints, and observe the resultant performance characteristics.

  • Cyclosophoraoses are a class of unbranced cyclic-(1longrightarrow2)-${\beta}$-D-glucans found in the Rhizobium species. Their unique cyclic structures and high solubility make them potent for inclusion complexation as a host for an insoluble guest molecule. A family of neutral cyclosophoraoses (DP 17-27) isolated from Rhizobium meliloti 2011 was used as a host for inclusion complexation with an insoluble guest drug, indomethacin. A high performance liquid chromatographic analysis indicated that the inclusion complexation of cyclosophoraoses greatly ehanced the solubility of indomethacin compared with ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin. The estimated value of the association constant of the complex in water for $\beta$-cyclodextrin and cyclosophoraoses was $523M^{-1} and 17,570M^{-1}$, respectively. NMR spectroscopy showed that the inclusion complex was characterized by the interaction of the indole ring moiety of indomethacin with the cavity of cyclosophoraoses.

  • Due to the lack of an accretion disk in a polar (magnetic cataclysmic variable, MCV), the material transferred from the secondary is directly accreted onto the white dwarf, forming an accretion stream and a hot spot on the white-dwarf component. During the eclipses, different light components can be isolated. Therefore, the monitoring of eclipsing polars could provide valuable information on several modern astrophysical problems, e.g., CVs as planetary hosting stars, mass transfer and mass accretion in CVs, and the magnetic activity of the most rapidly rotating cool dwarfs. In the past five years, we have monitored about 10 eclipsing polars (e.g., DP Leo and HU Aqr) using several 2-m class telescopes and about 100 eclipse profiles were obtained. In this paper, we will introduce the progress of our research group at YNOs. The first direct evidence of variable mass transfer in a CV is obtained and we show that it is the dark-spot activity that causes the mass transfer in CVs. Magnetic activity cycles of the cool secondary were detected and we show that the variable mass transfer is not caused by magnetic activity cycles. These results will shed light on the structure and evolution of close binary stars (e.g., CVs and Algols).

  • Purpose : The Epstein-Barr virus(EBV), gamma herpesvirus, is an important pathogen that is widespread around the world. The EBV causes various diseases depending on the geographic location, and on the immunity or the premorbid condition of the person exposed to EBV. To evaluate EBV typing may be the most important step to figure out the pathogenesis of EBV associated diseases, and we need to re-evaluate the pathologic role of human leukocyte antigen(HLA) in developing Epstein- Barr virus associated acute infectious mononucleosis by using newly developed methods. Methods : This study included 24 children(age range : 6 to 13 years), serologically confirmed with acute infectious mononucleosis. The control group for the HLA type consisted of 200 age-matched healthy children. To classify HLA I, modified ARMs-PCR was used, while modified PCR-SSOP was utilized in typing of HLA II. Also, we performed EBV typing in study patients by using a one-step PCR. Results : The results of HLA types : In HLA class I, HLA-A24 was positive in 69 of 200 healthy children and positive in 14 of 24 patients in the study group(relative risk : 3.5724, chi-square; 5.26, P<0.05). In HLA class II, HLA-DRB1*07 was detected in 18 of 200 healthy children, and eight of 24 patients in the study group(relative risk; 506173, chi-square; 9.73, P<0.01). The results of EBV types : In the research group, 20(83.8%) of 24 patients were shedding type A virus, while 4(16.7%) were type B. Conclusion : We conclude that development of infectious mononucleosis may be associated with HLA types, and these results suggest that acute infectious mononucleosis could have hereditary traits. And we confirm that type A EBV is highly prevalent in patients with acute infectious mononucleosis in Korea. Also, our results suggest that further large scale studies, including adult groups, regarding the association between pathogenesis of EBV with HLA-DP or HLA-DQ will be warranted.
