  • In this study, numerical experiments were carried out to estimate the SCR De-NOx performance in DOC plus SCR systems. The SCR De-NOx phenomena are described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood reaction scheme. After validating the present approach by comparing the present results with the experimental results, such various parameters as space velocity, $H_2O$ concentration, $NO_2$/NOx ratio and relative volume of DOC are explored to increase the SCR De-NOx performance. The results indicate that SCR De-NOx performance largely depends on space velocity and $NO_2$/NOx ratio, especially below $200^{\circ}C$. SCR De-NOx performance is seriously affected by relative volume of DOC with SCR due to increasing in $NO_2$/NOx ratio at below $250^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper represents an investigation into the pattern of carbon transportation and composition on an open estuary in the transition zone between the river and marine environment in Tamjin River where stream water flows into the Gangjin Bay. To conduct the study, seven plots were established along an environmental gradient from river and estuary to the ocean. Surface water samples were collected thrice during the summer rainfalls and non-flooding seasons in 2017. The samples were then measured for the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon ([DOC]), particulate organic carbon ([POC]) and dissolved inorganic carbon ([DIC]). An analysis of the results showed that [POC] did not increase in the river even during the summer rainfall. However, [DOC] increased resulting in a higher [DOC]:[POC] ratios for the non-flooding season compared to summer rainfall events. On the other hand, the marine site of the estuary bay showed the highest [DIC] which was stable relative to those of river sites. The results suggest that in an open estuary zone, river and ocean supplied the open estuary zone with different types of carbon materials; mainly DOC supplied from the river and DIC sourced from the ocean.

  • The support vector machine (SVM) has been successfully applied to various classification areas with a high level of classification accuracy. However, it is infeasible to use the SVM in analyzing massive data because of its significant computational problems. When analyzing imbalanced data with different class sizes, furthermore, the classification accuracy of SVM in minority class may drop significantly because its classifier could be biased toward the majority class. To overcome such a problem, we propose the DOC-SVM method, which uses divide-oversampling and conquers techniques. The proposed DOC-SVM divides the majority class into a few subsets and applies an oversampling technique to the minority class in order to produce the balanced subsets. And then the DOC-SVM obtains the final classifier by aggregating all SVM classifiers obtained from the balanced subsets. Simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the proposed method.

  • In this study, the relationship between organic carbon distribution characteristics and decomposition rate classified according to the particle size and biological degradation characteristics in water was investigated for the Nam river and Geumho river. The average concentrations of TOC in the Nam river and Geumho river were 2.7±1.2 mg/L and 5.0±1.2 mg/L, respectively, but the composition ratios for each type of organic carbon were similar. An average value of 80.9% of TOC was present as DOC and 72.8% of DOC consisted of Refractory-DOC (RDOC). In addition, the change in the RDOC composition ratio according to temporal and spatial distribution was the smallest. There was no difference in the decomposition rate of organic carbon except for TOC by the site (p≥0.108, one-way ANOVA), and the decomposition rates of Labile-POC (LPOC) and LDOC were similar at 0.139±0.102 and 0.137±0.149 day-1, respectively (p=0.110, paired t-test). The coefficient of variation (CV) of the decomposition rate of DOC (average 8.1%), which had the smallest composition ratio of organic carbon, was 1.1, showing the largest temporal variation. The TOC, POC, and DOC decomposition rates showed a significant correlation with the ratio of the initial concentration to the concentration after 25 days of decomposition (OC25/OC0) (r2=0.89~0.94, p<0.001), and the decomposition rates of LPOC and LDOC were significantly correlated with the ratio of the initial concentration to the concentration after 5 days of decomposition (LOC5/LOC0) (r2=0.67~0.75). This suggests that it is possible to estimate the decomposition rate through the concentration of each type of organic carbon.

  • Aquatic humic substance (AHS) was extracted from Soyang lake water using XAD-8 resin. and its concentration distribution in the lake from May to October. 1997 was determined. Ozonation characteristics of the AHS were studied as factors of pH, carbonate ion concentration. and the biodegradability and structural changes of the AHS were also investigated after ozonaticn. DOC distribution in Soyang Lake water was 1~3 mg/L. and the concentrations of AHS ranged between 0.2~0.8 mg/L. which was corresponding to 20~30% of DOC. AHS was composed of around 20% of HA and 80% of FA. The optimum pH value for AHS ozonation was in range of pH 7~9. When carbonate ions were added for AHS ozonation as a ladical scavenger. it was found that DOC removals were decreased. and the absorbance decreases were increased slightly. Biodegradability of the ozonized AHS was 50% higher than that of unozonated AHS. $^{13}C-NMR$ analysis showed that the aromatic compounds of AHS, after ozonation, were decreased from 49% to 17%. and the aliphatic and carboxylic compounds were increased from 34% to 51% and from 17% to 32%. respectively.

  • This paper is intended as an application of the biological rope media sedimentation tank using biodegradability of BAC(Biological activated carbon) to the drinking water treatment system for the removal of NOM. The removal of DOC(Dissolved organic carbon), UV absorbance(UV$\_$254/), and turbidity were evaluated under various operation condition of a biological rope media sedimentation tank such as raw water-media process (Media 1), ozonation-media process (Media 2), and ozonation-coagulation/sedimentation-media process (Media 3). The raw water had DOC concentration of 1.3∼3.4 mg/L, UV$\_$254/ of 0.027∼0.039 cm$\^$-1/, and turbidity of 0.3∼4.5 NTU, respectively. The average DOC concentration were 2.2 mg/L in media 1, 1.8 mg/L in media 2, and 1.3 mg/l in media 3 from raw water, respectively. On the other hand, the DOC concentration in conventional sedimentation tank was 1.5 mg/l. Higher removal of the DOC was noted in media 3 than media 1 and media 2. The UV$\_$254/ of the treated water were 0.037 cm$\^$-1/ in media 1, 0.027 cm$\^$-1/ in media 2, and 0.014 cm$\^$-1/ in media 3 from raw water, respectively The UV$\_$254/ in conventional sedimentation tank was 0.014 cm$\^$-1/ which is similar to that of media 3. Average turbidity of the treated water was 1.1 NTU in media 1, 0.9 NTU in media 2, and 0.5 NTU in media 3, respectively. It is expected that the biological rope media sedimentation tank is a good alternative over the conventional sedimentation process from these results.

  • In order to applicate a newly method for powdered activated carbon(PAC) selection based on economic efficiency, PAC adsorption tests were performed for removal of MIB and dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in drinking water supplies. The removal rate of MIB increased when the PAC dose increased. The Coal-based PACs were superior for adsorption of MIB compared to wood-based PACs. PAC adsorption of DOC and $UV_{254}$ were a little different for different PACs and types of raw water, but both were lower than adsorption of MIB. Among the tested PACs, the one called P-1000 was most effective for removal of MIB, DOC and $UV_{254}$. Most of the organics in the tested samples were proven by excitation emission matrix(EEM) results to be fulvic-like materials. Especially, fulvic-like materials, humic-like materials, and soluble microbial byproduct(SMP)-like materials decreased after contact with PAC. P-1000 which had the lowest MIB cost index(MCI) was selected as the optimum PAC for the target water. PAC efficiency and treatability, particle size and distribution, and the cost associated with PAC dosing for MIB removal according to DOC concentration should all be considered before making the final selection of the best PAC for the target water.

  • Wetlands are a well known ecosystem which have high spatial-temporal heterogeneity of chemical characteristics. This high heterogeneity induces diverse biogeochemical processes, such as aerobic decomposition, denitrification, and plant productivity in wetlands. Understanding the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and inorganic nitrogen in wetlands is important because DOC and inorganic nitrogen are main factors controlling biological processes in wetlands. In this study, we assessed spatial distribution of DOC and inorganic nitrogen with relation to the different hydrology and vegetation in created wetlands. Both DOC and nitrate contents were significantly higher in vegetated areas than open areas. Different water levels also affected DOC contents and their quality. Average DOC contents were $0.37mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ in deep riparian (DR) and $0.31mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ in shallow riparian (SR). These results appeared to be related to the interaction between carbon supply by vegetation and microbial decomposition. On the other hand, inorganic nitrogen contents were not affected by water level differences. This result indicates that presence/absence of vegetation could be a more important factor than hydrology in the spatial dynamics of inorganic nitrogen. In conclusion, we observed that vegetation and hydrology differences induced spatial distribution of carbon and nitrogen which are directly related to biogeochemical processes in wetlands.
