  • In this study, lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared from Pussy willow wood powder by disk-milling after pretreatment using the cosolvent of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]Ac) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with different mixing ratios for different time. All pretreated samples showed native cellulose I polymorph and cellulose crystallinity was lowest when cosolvent of DMF with 30% [EMIM]Ac was used. Average crystallite size of raw material and the pretreated product by MDF and its cosolvent with 10% [EMIM]Ac was found to be about 3.2 nm and decreased with increasing pretreatment time at the DMF cosolvent with 30% [EMIM]Ac. Defibrillation efficiency was improved by loosening wood cell wall structure by the pretreatment using co-solvent system of [EMIM]Ac and DMF.

  • This study has been conducted with continuous dental sanitary education for primary school pupils for five years from 1997 through 2001, based on data obtained from a 97' survey on primary school pupils' recognition on dental hygiene education and their permanent dental health capacity. Following results were drawn through comparative analysis of data obtained during the survey period. Approx 70.77% of the examinees have experienced decay missing feeling (DMF) in the year 2001, suggesting a good effectiveness of dental hygiene education compared with 92.1 % of DMF rate in 1997. It has been found that pupils' knowledge and recognition on dental hygiene and management, etc were improved, as well as their eating habits and consciousness were changed. Comparative analysis of annual DMF showed that DMF rate, DMFT index, and DT rate were found to decrease every year, suggesting a improved dental health capacity. Grade level analysis revealed that DMFT index and DT rate were found to decrease every year during the survey period, suggesting pupils' dental management and consciousness were improved and changed. It has been found that DMF rate more significantly increased in a higher grade in 2001 than 1997. There was no difference in DMF rate between grades of primary school in 1997. However, in the year 2001 increment of approx 10% of DMF rate were observed in a higher grade.

  • Structures of dimers of the acetonitrile and DMF diluted by carbon-tetrachloride and xenon matrices at 80K were studied with infrared absorption spectroscopy. Sample and matrix materials were codeposited onto a KBr cold trapping window. Infrared absorption spectra of pure samples and diluted samples were compared to explain the structures of dimers. The acetonitrile dimer showed the antiparallel shape and the DMF dimer showed the linear shape. After annealing, the infrared spectrum of the diluted sample showed the same shape with that of the pure sample.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of amides as a cryoprotectant for semen cryopreservation in Korean Jeju Black Bull. The semen was cryopreserved with extenders containing 5% dimethyl acetamide (DMA), 5% dimethyl formamide (DMF), 5% methyl formamide (MF) or 7% glycerol. Post-thawed sperm were evaluated for sperm motility, viability, acrosome integrity and membrane integrity. Post-thawed sperm motility was significantly higher (p<0.05) in glycerol and DMF ($64.00%{\pm}9.62$ and $59.00%{\pm}5.48$, respectively) than DMA and MF ($50.00%{\pm}3.24$ and $44.00%{\pm}4.18$, respectively). Sperm viability wassignificantly higher (p<0.05) in glycerol and DMF ($58.25%{\pm}7.35$ and $53.05%{\pm}3.77$, respectively) than others. However, for sperm motility and viability, there were no differences among glycerol and DMF. Also, swelling sperm ratio by hypo-osmetic selling test (HOST) was significantly increased (p<0.05) in glycerol and DMF treatments ($45.12%{\pm}25.08$ and $44.95%{\pm}8.58$, respectively). The percentage of capacitated sperm assessed by CTC staining, F pattern was lower (p<0.05) in DMF than others. B pattern was increased (p<0.05) in DMA, DMF and MF when compared with glycerol. AR pattern ratio was decreased (p<0.05) in glycerol and DMF when compared with DMA and MF. These results suggested that amides performed better and could be used as a cryoprotectant for semen freezing of Korean Jeju Black Bull.

  • This research was designed to investigate the effect of initial adsorbed amount of phenol, temperature, and pH on the desorption reaction of phenol from spent activated carbon loaded with phenol. Methanol, acetone, and N,N-dimethylformamide( DMF) were used as test organic solvents. The initial adsorbed quantities of phenol investigated here were 166.1mg/g, 180.7mg/g, and 197.9mg/g. The effect of temperature was evaluated from 15 to $55^{\circ}C$ with an interval of $10^{\circ}C$, while that of pH was investigated under acidic. neutral. and alkaline conditions. The extent of phenol desorption was proportional to the strength of dipole moment such as methanol < acetone < DMF. Over 90% desorption of phenol was achieved by acetone and DMF. The quantity of des orbed phenol by the organic solvents decreases with increasing the initial adsorbed amount of phenol. DMF is affected least by the initially adsorbed amount of phenol. An increase in reaction temperature leads to higher desorption of phenol. Desorption reaction by methanol is most sensitive to the temperature. As the pH of solvents increases. the desorption rate is also increasing. At pH=12. the desorption rate of phenol by methanol increases sharply by 10%. Although methanol demonstrated the weakest desorption power. the desorption capacity of methanol would approach that of acetone and DMF by adjusting temperature and pH. Methanol may emerge as a promising solvent for removing phenol from activated carbon because of acceptable regeneration efficiency as well as relatively cheap price.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate a method for the measurement of N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) and to apply the method to the ambient air samples. For the determination of DMF together with other general VOCs (e.g., benzene, toluene, and xylenes), adsorption sampling and thermal desorption with GC/MS was used in this study. The sampling and analytical approaches tested in this study showed a good repeatability and linearity with lower detection limits of less than 0.35 ppb. Field measurements were carried out at three industrial sites (Daegu-Seongseo, Siwha and Banwall industrial complexes) and one residential site in Daegu city during a period from October 2006 to November 2008. DMF was detected in 71.8% of the total samples from the Seongseo industrial complex, well known for textile industry. In contrast, DMF was detected in only 20.4% and 12.9% of all the samples from the other two sites in Banwall and Siwha industrial complexes, respectively. This implies that sources of DMF should be strongly associated with textile industry. The mean concentration of DMF also appeared to be the highest in Seongseo site (5.95 ppb), followed by a residential site in Daegu (3.28 ppb), Banwall (0.88 ppb) and Siwha (0.55 ppb). In this study, we demonstrated the environmental significance of DMF in urban ambient air. To our knowledge, the DMF measurement introduced in this paper is the first case of an official report in Korea.

  • DMF is not a good solvent for PVA. There is no solvent-PVA interaction such as H-bonding. DMF/PVA makes a UCST system. DMF/PVA makes a gel through crystallization-induced gelation. X-ray, thermal analysis, and other experimental proofs are presented. The gelation rate was faster at low temperature. Small addition of PEG increased the rate of gelation, but urea decreased the rate. SEM showed the phase demixing process very clearly. In the early stage of gelation, only phase demixing was occurring at a low rate. Hence, no holes appear in the early stage photographs. As demixing proceeded further, the holes began to appear and the sizes became bigger. DMF phase remains many holes after vaporization and PVA phase constitute the matrix phase.

  • The solvothermal reaction of zinc(H) nitrate $(Zn(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O)$ with $ATP(2-aminoterephthalate,\;H_2N-C_6H_3-1,4-(COO)_2)$ in a mixture of solvents of DMF and ethanol, in the presence of benzene, gave a 2 dimensional zinc polymer [Zn(ATP) (DMF)] (1). X-ray structure determination revealed that two zinc metals and four ATP ligands form the paddle-wheel SBUs, which are linked by the ATP ligands to give a 2-D square-grid network. Each square grid has approximate dimensions of $11.1\times11.1\;{\AA}$ based on Zn metals. Benzene was required to produce high-quality crystals of polymer 1.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to assess the factors influencing biological monitoring of textile coating factory workers exposed to N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF). Methods : We studied 35 workers who were occupationally exposed to DMF from 9 textile coating factories. The study was carried out in two phases; summer and winter. While air concentration of DMF, temperature and humidity were assessed in order to monitor the atmospheric conditions, biological monitoring was done to determine the internal dose by analyzing the N-methylformamide(NMF) collected from urine at the beginning and end of the shift. Questionnaires and medical surveillance were also obtained during the two phases. Results : Median air concentrations of DMF in winter and summer were 1.85 ppm and 2.78 ppm respectively. Also the difference between the urinary NMF concentration at the beginning and end of the shift $({\Delta}NMF)$ was always significant in each season (P < 0.001). The correlations between log DMF in air, log end-of-shift urinary NMF (r=0.555, P < 0.001) and log ${\Delta}NMF$ (r = 0.444, P < 0.001) was statistically significant in summer. The temperature, humidity, a shift system and different styles of clothing worn were significantly different during the two phases. In a multivariate analysis, temperature and the concentration of DMF in the air were the main factors influencing biological monitoring of textile coating factory workers. Conclusions : Concerning more comprehensive prevention measures to reduce exposure for those workers occupationally exposed to DMF, dermal exposure conditions such as temperature and humidity together with the air concentration of DMF should be assessed and biological monitoring is necessary to reduce adverse health effects, especially during the summer.
