  • DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) films have predominant tribological properties like a high hardness, low friction and high chemical resistance; therefore, DLC films are applied in a wide range of industrial fields. This paper evaluated the characteristics of DLC films deposited on bearing steel with different hardness by RF-PECVD (Radio Frequency - Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method. Si-interlayer was deposited on bearing steel to improve adhesion strength by RF-Sputtering method. The DLC film structures were analyzed with Raman spectra and Gaussian function. Adhesion strength of DLC films was measured with a scratch tester. Friction and wear test were carried out with a ball-on -disc type to investigate the tribological characteristics. Experimental results showed that DLC films deposited on bearing steel under same deposition condition have typical structure DLC films regardless of hardness of bearing steel. Adhesion strength of DLC film is increased with a hardness of bearing steel. Friction coefficient of DLC film showed lower at the high hardness of bearing steel.

  • The purpose of this study is to enhance an adhesion between substrate and Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) film. DLC has many outstanding properties such as low friction, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to achieve enough adhesion because of weak bonding between DLC film and the substrate. For improvement adhesion, a layer between DLC film and the substrate was prepared by dual post plasma. DLC film was deposited on nitrided layer by linear ion source. The composed compound layer between substrate and DLC film was investigated by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The synthesized bonding structure of DLC film was analyzed using a micro raman spectrometer. Mechanical properties were measured by nano-indentation. In order to clarify the mechanism for improvement in adhesive strength, it was observed by scratch test.

The purpose of this study is to improve the adhesion between substrate and DLC film. DLC film was deposited on AISI H13 using linear ion source. To improve adhesion, the substrate was treated by dual post plasma nitriding. In order to define the mechanism of the improvement in adhesive strength, the gradient layer between substrate and DLC film was analyzed by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The microstructure of the DLC film was analyzed using a micro Raman spectrometer. Mechanical properties were measured by nano-indentation, micro vickers hardness tester and tribology tester. The characteristic of adhesion was observed by scratch test. The adhesion of the DLC film was enhanced by active screen plasma nitriding layer.

  • Adhesion of DLC film is very significant property that exhibits wear resistance, chemical inertness and high hardness when being deposited to metal substrate. This study was considered that change adhesion of DLC film produced by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition can be presented through inserting interlayer (Cr, Si-C:H). The thickness of interlayer was result of changing adhesion and residual stress. It was showed that the maximum 12 N of adhesion is on DLC film of Cr interlayer, and that a tendency is to be increased residual stress depend on the thickness. DLC film of Si-C:H interlayer represented 16 N of adhesion at $1{\mu}m$, whereas adhesion is decreased when the thickness is increased. For the interlayer at multi-layer, it was the best that adhesion of Cr/Si-C:H/DLC film was 33 N. Si-C:H interlayer at DLC film controled adhesion of the whole film. It was relaxed the internal stress of DLC film produced by inserting Cr, Si-C:H interlayer.

  • DLC coating on ceramics is very useful for manufacturing the materials with hardness and low friction. Adhesion of DLC thin film on ceramics, on the other hand, is usually very weak. Adhesion of DLC film depends on many parameters such as contamination and chemical bonding between thin film and substrate. In this study, adhesion of DLC film on ceramics was improved by the intermediate layer when the plasma immersion ion deposition (PIID) technique was applied. It is found that the chemical composition and the thickness of intermediate layer have significantly an effect on the adhesion of DLC thin film on $Al_2O_3$.

  • We produce a photosensitive convex plate to research a Nickel metal relief printing plate using galvanic process. A Method for preparing DLC convex plate that is metalized on Nickel metal relief printing plate using CVD(Chemical Vapor Deposition) process and $N_2DLC$-convex plate that is DLC metalized thin film layer of $N_2$ plasma surface treatment are comprised. DLC thin film layers on Nickel surface are fragile. The results of the research indicate that the coefficient of friction on DLC metalized thin film layer is relatively low than Nickel surface and the durability of Nickel surface coated DLC metalized thin film layer is superior to Nickel surface. A relative evaluation of three form plate wetting properties using varnish liquid-drop plate indicates superior printing aptitudes for $N_2DLC$, DLC, Nichel plate order as above.

  • Plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIBD) technique is a cost-effective process for the deposition of diamond like carbon thin film, the possible solid lubricant on large surface and a complex shape. We used PIIB process for the preparation of DLC thin film on $Al_2O_3$ with deposition conditions of deposition temperature range $200^{\circ}C$, working gas pressure of 1.310-1Pa. DLC thin films were coated by $C_2H_2$ ion beam deposition on $Al_2O_3$ after the ion bombardment of SiH4 as the bonding layer. Energetic bombardment of $C_2H_2$ ions during the DLC deposition to ceramic materials generated mixed layers at the DLC-Si interface which enhanced the interface to be highly bonded. Wear test showed that the low coefficient of friction of around 0.05 with normal load 2.9N and proved the advantage of the low energy ion bombardment in PIIBD process which improved the tribological properties of DLC thin film coated alumina ceramic. Furthermore, PIIBD was recognized as a useful surface modification technique for the deposition of DLC thin film on the irregular shape components, such as molds, and for the improvement of wear and adhesion problems of the DLC thin film, high temperature solid lubricant.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has many outstanding properties such as low friction, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to achieve enough adhesion on the metal substrates because of weak bonding between DLC film and the metal substrate. The purpose of this study is to enhance an adhesion of DLC film. For improving adhesion, the substrate was treated by active screen plasma nitriding before DLC film deposing. Nitrided substrates were investigated by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS), Micro-Vickers Hardness. DLC films were deposited on several metals by linear ion source, and characteristics of the films were investigated using nano-indentation, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The adhesion was measured by scratch tester. The adhesion of DLC films was increased when nitriding layer was formed before DLC deposition. Therefore, the adhesion of DLC film can be enhanced as increasing the hardness of materials.

  • Electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with ion beam exposure on the new diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were investigated. A good voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min was observed. Also, the fast response time of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved. Finally, the residual DC voltage of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD on the DLC thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (Pl) surface.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film. A high pretilt angle of about $4^{\circ}$ was measured by ion beam(IB) exposure on the DLC thin film surface. A good LC alignment was observed by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high NLC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment can be achieved by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface.
