  • This study was conducted to evaluate heavy metal concentrations(Cd, Cu, Z, and Pb) in the soil of two zinc mines and to correlate heavy metal contents between the soils and trees growing near the mines. Soils and leaves, stems, and roots of five tree species(Corylus heterophylla, Pinus rigida. Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa, Rhododendron mucronulatum, and Robinia pseudoacacia) were collected from Sambo Zinc Mine located in Hwasung and Gahak Zinc Mine in Kwangmyung city in Kyonggido. Soils near two zinc mines were not seriously contaminated by heavy metals, but Zn and Pb concentrations were at toxic level. The heavy metal concentration in soils decreased in the order of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd, and decreased with increasing distance from zinc mining sites. Among the five tree species, Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa showed the highest heavy metal concentrations in the tissue except for Pb. Particulars, leaves of the species contained the high concentrations of heavy metals to reach the maximum of 91ppm Zn. The roots of Corylus heterophylla contained high concentrations of Cu and Pb. The order of heavy metal concentrations in the tree species was Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd. The concentration of heavy metals in the tree tissues showed a positive correlation with that in soil in which trees are growing. The ratio of heavy metal concentration of trees to that of soils(concentration factor : CF) was highest in Zn and lowest in Pb. Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa had the highest CF value among the five tree species. It was concluded that Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa, based on the high metal uptake ability, could be used for decontaminating of heavy metals from contaminated soils, and Pinus rigida could be used to reflect the level of contamination in soils.

  • Purpose: To identify the damage of the articular cartilage and analyze the clinical results of the partial medial meniscectomy. Materials and Methods: From January 2001 to December 2004, forty-eight patients in the degenerative arthritis and medial meniscal tear of knee who undertook arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and were able to keep pace with the times follow-up for more than 3 years were enrolled in this study. Six cases were men and 42 were women, and the mean age was 55.7 years (40~78 years). The patients were classified into two groups according to the Outerbridge grade. Grade I and II were classified into group 1 and grade III and IV into group 2. Group 1 included 30 cases and group 2 included 18 cases. The result were analyzed according to the Tapper & Hoover classification and Lysholm knee scoring scale. And we measured the distance of medial joint space in standing anteroposterior (AP) view of both sides at the pre-operative and the last follow-up. Results: According to the Tapper & Hoover classification, 28 cases were excellent, 7 cases good, 8 cases fair, and 5 cases poor. Among group 1, 25 cases were excellent, 2 cases good, 2 cases fair, 1 case poor. However, among group 2, 3 cases were excellent, 5 cases good, 6 cases fair, 4 cases poor. Average Lysholm knee score was improved from 62.4 preoperatively to 94 postoperatively in group 1, and from 58 preoperatively to 77.9 postoperatively in group 2. The joint space narrowing showed no statistically significant difference in both knees standing AP view. Conclusion: The arthroscopic partial meniscectomy for a patient with the degenerative articular cartilage was an effective treatment. However, we could not satisfy the results, in cases of Outerbridge grade III and IV. In grade III and IV, the partial meniscectomy was not aggravated the cartilage damage.

  • The pharynx have significant locations and functions because it forms a part of the unit in which respiration and deglutition are carried out. Because of the closed relationship between the pharynx and the dentofacial and craniofacial structure, many studies are carried out on this subjects. The purpose of this study were to compare the airway size including pharynx, soft palate, tongue and hyoid bone between normal and hyperdivergent skeletal pattern and to evaluate the change of those size in different age. The sample of this study were consisted of 51 subjects in normal group, 52 subjects in hyperdivergent group. Each was divided into two subgroups by age , child group(9-l2yr old) and adult group(18yr old over). The lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken and the distance, angle and ratio of the facial skeleton, pharynx, soft palate, tongue and hyoid bone were measured and evaluated statistically. The result obtained were summarized as follows : 1 SN-Mn angle, FMA, and Pal-Mn angle were significantly larger in child group than adult group, but the lower anterior facial height(LAFH) and facial height ratio(FHR) were significantly smaller in child group than adult group. Occlu-Mn angle was significantly steep in hyperdivergent group than normal, but not significantly different between child group and adult group. 2. Hyperdivergent group and child group had the stronger correlation between SN-Mn angle, FMA, Pal-Mn angle, LAFH and FHR and airway size than normal group and adult group. Hyperdivevgent child group had significant negative correlation between SN-Mn angle, FMA, Pal-Mn angle and sagittal skeletal dimension of nasopharynx and sagittal depth of nasopharyngeal lumen. Significant positive correlation were seen between LAFH and vertical measurement of airway. 3. There was no difference of the linear measurement of airway size between hyperdivergent group and normal group. 4. Adult group had smaller posterior pharyngeal wall, target nasopharyngeal depth longer nasopharyngeal height and longer pharyngeal length than child group. 5. The sagittal measurement of hyoid bone had no difference between child group and adult group. But adult group had larger vertical measurement of hyoid bone than child group.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between menton deviation and dental compensation in facial asymmetry. Methods: Tooth axis and distance of first molar and canine to the reference plane were investigated by cone-beam computerized tomography. The subjects consisted of 50 patients with asymmetric mandibles (male 21, female 29, mean age 24.3 years). Control groups were also assessed (male 11, female 9, mean age 25.6 years). Nine measurements (5 linear measurements and 4 angular measurements) were measured in order to evaluate the correlation between menton deviation and the linear and angular difference of first molar and canine in the deviated and none-deviated sides using the defined MPR images. The differences between deviated and non-deviated side, according to menton deviation, were statistically analyzed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: From the result, Menton deviation was negatively correlated with mandibular first molar's angular measurement (${\Delta\angle}LM6$-Mn plane (dev.-ndev.)) and positively with maxillary fist molar's angular measurement (${\Delta\angle}UM6$-FH plane (dev.-ndev.)) (p < 0.01). Two angular measurements (${\Delta\angle}LM6$-Mn plane (dev.-ndev.), ${\Delta\angle}UM6$-FH plane (dev.-ndev.)) explained the variability in menton deviation with a significant $r^2$ value of 0.589. Conclusions: This study suggests that the tooth axis of upper and lower first molars leans towards the deviated side of Menton when there is mandibular asymmetry with Menton deviation.

  • The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of periodontal tissue and repair of function. For more than a decade there have been many efforts to develop materials and bioactive molecule(such as growth factor and differentiation factors) to promote periodontal wound healing. Among the bioactive molecules, bone morphogenetic protein(BMP) was studied for periodontal wound healing. Since Urist demonstrated that demineralized bone matrix could induce the formation of cartilage and bone in ectopic site, many studies on BMP have been reported. Among those BMPs, it was reported that rhBMP-2 enhanced the healing of bone defects in animal studies and clinical studies. However, its efficacy in periodontal regeneration, especially 1-wall intrabony defects is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of rhBMP-2/ACS on the epithelial migration, gingival connective tissue adhesion, cementum formation, alveolar bone regeneration in intrabony defects of dogs. Four millimeter deep and four millimeter wide 1-wall defects were surgically created in the mesial aspects of the 3rd incisors. The test group received rhBMP-2/ACS with a flap procedure and the control underwent buffer/ACS with a flap procedure. Histologic analysis after 8 weeks of healing revealed the following results: 1. The length of epithelial growth(the distance from alveolar crest to the apical end of JE) was $0.9{\pm}1.5mm$ in the control group and $1.2{\pm}1.4mm$ in the test group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. 2. The length of connective tissue adhesion was $2.4{\pm}1.3mm$ in the control group and $1.2{\pm}1.1mm$ in the test group. The control group showed significantly enhanced adhesion(P<0.05). 3. The length of new cementum was $0.9{\pm}1.0mm$ in the control group and $1.7{\pm}0.8mm$ in the test group. The test group showed significantly enhanced cementum regeneration(P<0.05). 4. The length of new bone height was $1.9{\pm}0.6mm$ in the control group and $2.4{\pm}0.9mm$ in the test group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. 5. The new bone area was $4.7{\pm}1.7mm^2$ in the control group and $8.0{\pm}2.0mm^2$ in the test group. The test group showed significantly enhanced bone formed area(P<0.05). 6. The new bone density was $73.0{\pm}8.6%$ in the control group and $66.6{\pm}15.3%$ in the test group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. These results suggest that the use of rhBMP-2 in 1-wall intrabony defects has significant effect on new cementum and new bone formation area, but doesn't have any significant effect on the prevention of junctional epithelium migration and new bone formation height.

  • This study will define the features of the viewpoint that best enables the view of Busan Port from Young-Do. Special focus will be on spatial distribution, the type Busan Port sights that can be experienced from Young-Do, the compositional characteristic of a port landscape and visual characteristic. The results are based on 27 selected viewpoints and are as follows. Firstly, the patterns of the spatial distribution of viewpoints are classified as park, public facility and wayside types. It was found that most viewpoints are located along a wayside. Secondly, the types of Busan Port sights that can be experienced from Young-Do are divided into three kinds: surrounding stand-line type, facing the port and the type of penetrating city. The major type was of penetrating city among the three patterns. The reason for this is that the point of view for Busan Port was changed into a prospect over the sea since city and road sections have been expanding due to the urbanization of Young-Do. Thirdly, the compositional characteristics of the port landscape are divided into three styles: panoramic, corridor, and rooftop. The most frequent type is the rooftop style among the three characteristics. This fact indicates that the picture of Busan Port seen from Young-Do loses continuity of view and that housetops inhibit the sense of distance. Lastly, the visual characteristics of the viewpoint were analyzed. The angles of the declination of the viewpoints are concentrated on the horizontally closed parts. Thirteen points lie between $-3^{\circ}$ and $-1^{\circ}$, and twelve points between $-6^{\circ}$ and $-4^{\circ}$. The visual axes of the depression are two points because sight is interrupted by buildings which are built when the city expands. Two viewpoints for experiencing the optimum landscape of depression should be prepared to ensure continuous preservation of the viewpoints. The sight creates a wide prospect, reaching from 0.2km to 6.4km. It is expected that the results of this study can be used for the landscape plans of port cities including the management and preservation of viewpoints.

  • In this study, a new concept of ocean transport system, called the mobile harbor serving for a short distance transport of containers with cargo handling cranes between mother containerships and coastal ports, is introduced. Instead of direct berthing a very large containership at the coastal port, Mobile Harbor is moving to the offshore mooring basin with enough water depth condition. Therefore, investigation of the coastal environment, technical condition and limitation of the domestic trade ports for the application of Mobile Harbor, is essential process. To figure out the accessibility of mobile harbor, the environmental conditions, the cargo handling capacity and marine traffic volume and flow pattern has been analyzed with the tools for marine traffic simulation and virtual navigation aids system. The most proper Mobile Harbor mooring areas among trade ports of the south and east coast are selected by analyzing the obtained information and evaluating its application: (1) Under natural environmental conditions such as air and sea weather, three candidate areas are selected such as Masan port, Ulsan port, and Busan(New port) port. (2) Under marine traffic and appropriateness of water facilities, three candidate areas are selected as Mokpo port, Busan(New port) port, and Donghae & Mookho port (3) For a region-based analysis considering handling capacity and the local managed trade ports in vicinity, three candidate areas are selected as Busan region, Yosu & KwangYang region, and Mokpo region. Through this study, the basic guideline for selection of optimum trade port and offshore mooring basin for mothership and Mobile Harbor is recommended. In order to apply the Mobile Harbor to the real water, navigaton aids as the virtual route identification with AIS must be introduced for maritime safety in the vicinity of Mobile Harbor area which berthing and cargo handling is being conducted.

  • Severe sediment erosion during floods occur disaster and economic losses, but general sediment erosion is basic mechanism to move sediment from upstream to downstream river. In addition, it is important process to change river form. Check dam, which is constructed in mountain stream, play a vital role such as control of sudden debris flow, but it has negative aspects to river ecosystem. Now a day, check dam of open type is an alternative plan to recover river biological diversity and ecosystem through sediment transport while maintaining the function of disaster control. The purpose of this paper is to verify sediment erosion progress of river bottom and bank as first step for river restoration after dam slit by cross-sectional shear stress and critical shear stress. Study area is upstream reach of slit check dam in mountain stream, named Wasada, in Japan. The check dam was slit with two passages in August, 2010. The transects were surveyed for four upstream cross-sections, 7.4 m, 34 m, 86 m, and 150 m distance from dam in October 2010. Sediment size was surveyed at river bottom and bank. Sediment of cobble size was found at the wetted bottom, and small size particles of sand to medium gravel composed river bank. Discharge was $2.5\;m^3/s$ and bottom slope was 0.027 m/m. Excess shear stress (${\tau}_{ex}$) was calculated for hydraulic erosion by subtracting the values of critical shear stress (${\tau}_{c}$) from the value of shear stress (${\tau}$) at river bottom and bank (${\tau}_{ex}=\tau-{\tau}_c$). Shear stress of river bottom (${\tau}_{bottom}$) was calculated using the cross-sectional shear stress, and bank shear stress (${\tau}_{bank}$) was calculated from the method of Flintham and Carling (1988). $${\tau}_{bank}={\tau}^*SF_{bank}((B+P_{bed})/(2^*P_{bank}))$$ where $SF_{bank}=1.77(P_{bed}/p_{bank}+1.5)^{-1.4}$, B is the water surface width, $P_{bed}$ and $P_{bank}$ are wetted parameter of the bed and bank. Estimated values for ${\tau}_{bottom}$ for a flow of $2.5\;m^3/s$ were lower as 25.0 (7.5 m cross-section), 25.7 (34 m), 21.3 (86 m) and 19.8 (150 m), in N/$m^2$, than critical shear stress (${\tau}_c=62.1\;N/m^2$) with cobble of 64 mm. The values were insufficient to erode cobble sediment. In contrast, even if the values of ${\tau}_{bank}$ were lower than the values for ${\tau}_{bottom}$ as 18.7 (7.5 m), 19.3 (34 m), 16.1 (86 m) and 14.7 (150 m), in N/$m^2$, excess shear stresses were calculated at the three cross-sections of 7.5 m, 34 m, and 86 m distances compare with ${\tau}_c$ is 15.5 N/$m^2$ of 16mm gravel. Bank shear stresses were sufficient for erosion of the medium gravel to sand. Therefore there is potential to erode lateral bank than downward erosion in a flow of $2.5\;m^3/s$. Undercutting of the wetted bank can causes bank scour or collapse, therefore this channel has potential to become wider at the same time. This research is about a potential of sediment erosion, and the result could not verify with real data. Therefore it need next step for verification. In addition an erosion mechanism for river restoration is not simple because discharge distribution is variable by snow-melting or rainy season, and a function for disaster control will recover by big precipitation event. Therefore it needs to consider the relationship between continuous discharge change and sediment erosion.

  • Hwang River in South Korea, has experienced channel adjustments due to dam construction. Hapcheon main dam and re-regulation dam. The reach below the re-regulation dam (45 km long) changed in flow regime, channel width, bed material distribution, vegetation expansion, and island formation after dam construction. The re-regulation dam dramatically reduced annual peak flow from 654.7 $m^3$/s to 126.3 $m^3$/s and trapped the annual 591 thousand $m^3$ of sediment load formerly delivered from the upper watershed since the completion of the dam in 1989. An analysis of a time series of aerial photographs taken in 1982, 1993, and 2004 showed that non-vegetated active channel width narrowed an average of 152 m (47% of 1982) and non-vegetated active channel area decreased an average of 6.6 km2 (44% of 1982) between 1982 and 2004, with most narrowing and decreasing occurring after dam construction. The effects of daily pulses of water from peak hydropower generation and sudden sluice gate operations are investigated downstream of Hapcheon Dam in South Korea. The study reach is 45 km long from the Hapcheon re-regulation Dam to the confluence with the Nakdong River. An analysis of a time series of aerial photographs taken in 1982, 1993, and 2004 showed that the non-vegetated active channel width narrowed an average of 152 m (47% reduction since 1982). The non-vegetated active channel area also decreased an average of 6.6 $km^2$ (44% reduction since 1982) between 1982 and 2004, with most changes occurring after dam construction. The average median bed material size increased from 1.07 mm in 1983 to 5.72 mm in 2003, and the bed slope of the reach decreased from 0.000943 in 1983 to 0.000847 in 2003. The riverbed vertical degradation is approximately 2.6 m for a distance of 20 km below the re-regulation dam. It is expected from the result of the unsteady sediment transport numerical model (GSTAR-1D) steady simulations that the thalweg elevation will reach a stable condition around 2020. The model also confirms the theoretical prediction that sediment transport rates from daily pulses and flood peaks are 21 % and 15 % higher than their respective averages.
