Changes in climate have largely increased concentrated heavy rainfall, which in turn is causing enormous damages to humans and properties. Therefore, the exact relationship and the spatial variability analysis of hydrometeorological elements and characteristic factors is critical elements to reduce the uncertainty in rainfall -runoff model. In this study, radar rainfall grid resolution and grid resolution depending on the topographic factor in rainfall - runoff models were how to respond. In this study, semi-distribution of rainfall-runoff model using the model ModClark of Inje, Gangwon Naerin watershed was used as Gwangdeok RADAR data. The completed ModClark model was calibrated for use DEM of cell size of 30m, 150m, 250m, 350m was chosen for the application, and runoff simulated by the RADAR rainfall data of 500m, 1km, 2km, 5km, 10km from 14 to 17 on July, 2006. According to the resolution of each grid, in order to compare simulation results, the runoff hydrograph has been made and the runoff has also been simulated. As a result, it was highly runoff simulation if the cell size is DEM 30m~150m, RADAR rainfall 500m~2km for peak flow and runoff volume. In the statistical analysis results, if every DEM cell size are 500m and if RADAR rainfall cell size is 30m, relevance of model was higher. Result of sensitivity assessment, high index DEM give effect to result of distributed model. Recently, rainfall -runoff analysis is used lumped model to distributed model. So, this study is expected to make use of the efficiently decision criteria for configurated models.

In this study, TOPMODEL(TOPography based hydrologic MODEL) was tested linked with Muskingum river routing technique for $581.7km^2$ Anseong-cheon watershed. Linear trend surface interpolation was used to give flow direction for flat areas located in downstream watershed. MDF (multiple flow direction) algorithm was adopted to derive the distribution of ln(a/$tan{\beta}$) values of the model. Because the coarser DEM resolution, the greater information loss, the watershed was divided into subwaterhseds to keep DEM resolution, and the simulation result of the upstream watershed was transferred to downstream watershed by Muskingum techniques. Relative error of the simulated result by 500 m DEM resolution showed 27.2 %. On the other hand, the relative error of the simulated result of 300 m DEM resolution by linked 2 subwatersheds with Muskingum method showed 15.8 %.

The purpose of the paper is to make the three dimensional road simulation model based on the digital photogrammetry and GIS techniques in the middle of Halla mountain of Jeju island. To do this, we generate DEM (digital elevation model) and digital ortho image using GIS tools such as Arc View, Imagestation and MGE module. In GIS, the overlay map schemes combining of the hill shade, the land slope and aspect were applied. Based on the processes, we can build the best three dimensional road line along the hill side of the island. From the results, we also found that the derived DEM from digital ortho image and the GIS technique were very useful for choosing the best three dimensional road design before the real road construction works in Jeju island.
Technological innovations in the 21th Century greatly change the society. The radical advance in computer science brought changes and increased efficiency into society in general. The field of archaeology is also highly influenced and attempts to improve previous manually conducted field survey and research have been actively made. In order to supplement incomplete data set from archaeological excavation, the ways to use computer have been highly explored. GIS is one of them. However, use of GIS has been limited to document locations and to produce distribution map of features using digital map. There are no proper guides to employ GIS for academic research, so that it is hard for beginners to learn how to make use of GIS. In this paper, functions of GIS are introduced even for beginners, including definition of GIS and its archaeological use. It is also explained how to get DEM from digital map to do spatial pattern analysis. Various GIS special pattern analyses using DEM and 3D simulation are presented, as well.

In discrete element modeling, 2D software has been widely used in order to gain further insights into the fundamental mechanisms with less computational time. The porosities used in 2D DEM studies should be determined with appropriate approaches based on 3D laboratory porosities. This paper summarizes the main approaches for converting porosities from 3D to 2D for DEM studies and theoretical evaluations show that none of the current approaches can be widely used in dealing with soil mechanical problems. Therefore, a parabolic equation and a criterion have been suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in this paper. Moreover, a case study has been used to validate that the 2D porosity obtained from the above suggestion to be rational with both the realistic contact force distribution in the specimen and the good agreement of the DEM simulation results of direct shear tests with the corresponding experimental data. Therefore, the parabolic equation and the criterion are suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in a wide range of polydisperse particle systems, especially in dealing with soil mechanical problems.
The well-known Dimension Exchange Method(DEM) to quantized loads may result in difference in assigned loads to processors as large as logn~units, in the worst case, after balancing for a hypercube of size n. In order to limit the increase of the accumulation of these differences, this paper proposes a method that limits the accumulation of the difference by redistributing an unit load (odd or even) of the same type, if possible, when there is a load distribution between two processors. We reduced the maximum difference to LCEIL logn over {2} RCEIL . The result shows the simulation experiments which show about 30% improvement in speedup compare to the DEM.

In recent, flood inundation damages by hydraulic structure failures have increased drastically and thus a variety of countermeasures were needed to minimize such damages. A real-time flood inundation prediction technique is essential to protect and mitigate flood inundation damages. In the context of real time flood inundation modeling, this study aims to develop a grid based two-dimensional numerical method for flood inundation modeling using globally-available DEM data: SRTM with $90m{\times}90m$ spatial resolution. The newly-developed model guarantees computational efficiency in terms of geometric data processing by direct application of DEM for flood inundation modeling and also have good compatibility with various types of raster data when compared to a commercial model such as FLUMEN. The model, which employed the leap-frog algorithm to solve shallow water and continuity equations, can simulate inundating flow from channel to lowland and also returning flow from lowland to channel by comparing water levels between channel and lowland in real time. We applied the model to simulate the BaekSan levee break in the Nam river during a flood period from August 10 to 13, 2002. The simulation results had good agreements with the field-surveyed data in terms of inundated area and also showed physically-acceptable velocity vector maps with respect to inundating and returning flows.
Geogrid application that has proved to be an effective and economic method of reinforcing particles, is widely used in geotechnical engineering. The discrete element method (DEM) has been used to investigate the micro mechanics of the geogrid deformation and also the interlocking mechanism that cannot be easily studies in laboratory tests. Two types of realistically shaped geogrid models with square and triangle apertures were developed using parallel bonds in PFC3D. The calibration test simulations have demonstrated that the precisely shaped triangular geogrid model is also able to reproduce the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrids. Moreover, the square and triangular geogrid models were also used in DEM pull-out test simulations with idealized shape particle models for validation. The simulation results have been shown to provide good predictions of pullout force as a function of displacement especially for the initial 30 mm displacement. For the granular material of size 40 mm, both the experimental and DEM results demonstrate that the triangular geogrid of size 75 mm outperforms the square geogrid of size 65 mm. Besides, the simulations have given valuable insight into the interaction between particle and geogrid and also revealed similar deformation behavior of geogrids during pullout. Therefore, the DEM provides a tool which enable to model other possible prototype geogrid and investigate their performance before manufacture.

The purpose of this research is to design a road using digital photogrammatry method to generate DEM(digital elevation model) and digital ortho image based on GSIS which was applied to the road simulation. The example study area was the suburbs of Jeju city. To this study, 1/5,000 digital map and GSIS technique were used for optimum road design of the island based on Arc View software. Using this software we can Set an overlay map by combination of hill shade map, slope map, aspect map, and building buffer map. Based on this overlap map, we designed the best road line and along this line we performed three dimensional road simulation using Microstation CAD and Inroads road design programs. From the results, we found that the DEM and digital ortho image acquired from stereoairphoto using digital photogrammatry was satisfied for choosing the best roadline and the developed three dimensional road simulation technique using GSIS technique was very useful to estimate the reasonable road design before the real road construction works.

This study investigated the effect of the grinding media of a ball mill under various conditions on the raw material of copper powder during the milling process with a simulation of the discrete element method. Using the simulation of the three-dimensional motion of the grinding media in the stirred ball mill, we researched the grinding mechanism to calculate the force, kinetic energy, and medium velocity of the grinding media. The grinding behavior of the copper powder was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. We found that the particle size increased with an increasing rotation speed and milling time, and the particle morphology of the copper powder became more of a plate type. Nevertheless, the particle morphology slightly depended on the different grinding media of the ball mill. Moreover, the simulation results showed that rotation speed and ball size increased with the force and energy.
