The exact resolution of channel initiation points is not so easy because of the dynamic behaviors of water movement on the hillslope. To this end, Kim, Joocheol and Kim, Jaehan(2007) have represented the channel network in real world basins for slope-area regimes using DEM. This study is its sequential content and then proposes the reliabilities of the hypothetical channel networks identified from DEM, which are assessed based on the geometric characteristics of drainage density and source-basin. The resulting drainage structures on the natural basin can be found to be depicted remarkably depending on the hypothetical channel network applied by slop-area threshold criterion. In addition, it is shown that there is a wonderful geometric similarity between the shapes of source- basin in a geomorphologically homogeneous region. Area threshold criterion could have restricted the shape of source-basin, so that it might bring about the incorrect drainage structures. But the hypothetical channel networks identified from DEM deserves special emphasis on expressing the space-filling structures nonetheless.
An efficient modeling and management of a large amount of surface data for a wide rage of geographic information play an important role in determining the functionality of 3D geographic information system. It has been put many efforts to design and manage an effective way to enhence the manipulation of the data by considering geometry type and data structures. Recently, DEM(Data Elevation Model) and TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) are used for representing surface data. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN, respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. The first is an optimal resolution of DEM which represent all of wide range of geographic data. The second is the full resolution DEM which is a subarea of original data generated by user's selection in our implemeatation. The third is the TIN approximation of this data with a proper resolution determined by the relative position with the camera. And the last step is multi-resolution TIN data whose resolution is dynamically decided by considering which direction user take notice currently. Specially, the TIN of the last step is designed for realtime camera navigation. By using the structure we implemented realtime surface clipping, efficient approximation of height field and the locally detailed surface LOD(Level of Detail). We used the initial 10-meter sampling DEM data of Seoul, KOREA and implement the structure to the 3D Virtual GIS based on the Internet.

This study aims to select an optimal site for the development of small-scaled artificial ground water recharge system with the purpose of 50ton/day pumping in dry season. First of all, the topography shape satisfying the numerous factors of a hydraulic model experiment is defined and an appropriate pumping efficiency is calculated through the model experiment of injection and pumping scenario. In next step, GIS(Geographic Information System) database are constructed by processing several geospatial data to explore the optimal site. In detail, watershed images are generated from DEM(Digital Elevation Model) with 5m cell size, which is set for the minimum area of the optimal site selection. Slope maps are made from DEM to determine the optimal hydraulic gradient to procure the proper aquifer undercurrent period. Finally, the suitable site for artificial recharge system is selected using an integration of overall data, such as an alluvial map, DEM, orthoimages, slope map, and watershed images.

Recent floodplain data are important for river master plan, storm and flood damage reduction comprehensive plan and pre-disaster impact assessment. Hazard map, base of floodplain data, is being emphasized as important method of non-structural flood prevention and consist of inundation trace map, inundation expected map and hazard information map. Inundation trace map describes distribution of area that damaged from typhoons, heavy rain and tsunamis and includes identified flood level, flood depth and flood time from flooding area. However due to lack of these data by local government, which are foundational and supposed to be well prepared nationwide, having hard time for making inundation trace map or hazard information map. To overcome this problem, time consumption and budget reduction is required through various research. From this study, DEM (Digital Elevation Model) from image material from UAVS (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System) and numeric geographic map from National Geographic Information Institute are used for calculating flooding damaged area and compared with inundation trace map. As results, inundation trace map DEM based on image material from UAVS had better accuracy than that used DEM based on numeric geographic map. And making hazard map could be easier and more accurate by utilizing image material from UAVS than before.
Terrain data is one of important basic data in various areas of Earth science. Recently, finer DEM data is available, which necessary to develop a method that deals with such huge data efficiently. This study was conducted on the lossless compression of DEM data and efficient partial reconstruction of terrain information from compressed data. In this study, we compressed the wavelet coefficients of DEM, obtained from integer wavelet transform (IWT) by entropy encoding. CDF (Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau) 3.5 wavelet showed the best compression ratio of about 45.4% and the optimum decomposition level was 3. Results also showed that a small region of terrain could be restored from the inverse wavelet transform with a part of the wavelet coefficients that are related to such region instead of whole reconstruction. We discussed the potential applications of the terrain data compression for precise gravity terrain correction.

For given 3D geographic data which is usually of DEM(Data Elevation Model) format, we have to represent and manipulate the data in various ways. For example, we have to draw a part of them in drawing canvas. To do this we give users a way of selecting area they want to visualize. And we have to give a base tool for users to select the local area which can be chosen for some geographic operation. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method for representation and manipulation. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN(Triangular Irregular Network), respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. Particle morphology change and different experimental condition analysis during composite fabrication process by traditional ball milling with discrete element method (DEM) simulation were investigated. A simulation of the three dimensional motion of balls in a traditional ball mill for research on the grinding mechanism was carried out by DEM simulation. We studied the motion of the balls, the ball behavior energy and velocity; the forces acting on the balls were calculated using traditional ball milling as simulated by DEM. The effect of the operational variables such as the rotational speed, ball material and size on the flow velocity, collision force and total impact energy were analyzed. The results showed that increased rotation speed with interaction impact energy between balls and balls, balls and pots and walls and balls. The rotation speed increases with an increase of the impact energy. Experiments were conducted to quantify the grinding performance under the same conditions. Furthermore, the results showed that ball motion affects the particle morphology, which changed from irregular type to plate type with increasing rotation speed. The evolution was also found to depend on the impact energy increase of the grinding media. These findings are useful to understand and optimize the particle motion and grinding behavior of traditional ball mills.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation from remotely sensed imagery is crucial for a variety of mapping applications such as ortho-photo generation, city modeling. High resolution imaging satellites such as SPOT-5, IKONOS, QUICK-BIRD, ORBVIEW constitute an excellent source for efficient and economic generation of DEM data. However, prerequisite knowledge in the areas of sensor modeling, epipolar resampling, and image matching is required to generate DEM from these high resolution satellite imagery. From the above requirements, epipolar resampling emerges as the most important factors. Research attempts in this area are still in high demand and short supply. Another cause that adds to the complication of the problem is that most studies of DEM generation from IKONOS scenes have been based on rational function model. In this paper, we proposed a new methodology for DEM generation from satellite scenes using parallel projection model which is sensor independent, makes it possible for sensor modeling and epipolar resampling by only few control points. The performance and feasibility of the developed methodology is evaluated through real dataset captured by IKONOS.
The first Korean remote sensing satellite, Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-1), is going to be launched in 1999. This will carry a 7m resolution Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) for earth observation. The primary mission of the KOMPSAT-1 is to acquire stereo imagery over the Korean peninsular for the generation of 1:25,000 scale cartographic maps. For this mission, research is being carried out to assess the possibilities of automated or semi-automated mapping of EOC data and to develop, if necessary, such enabling tools. This paper discusses the issue of automated digital elevation model (DEM) generation from EOC data and identifies some important aspects in developing a DEM generation system from EOC data. This paper also presents the current status of the development work for such a system. The development work will be described in three pares of sensor modelling, stereo matching and DEM interpolation. The performance of the system is shown with a SPOT stereo pair. A DEM generated from commercial software is also presented for comparison. The proposed system seems to generate promising results.

We construct improved geocentric digital elevation model (DEM), estimate tidal dynamics and ice stream velocity over Sulzberger Ice Shelf, West Antarctica employing differential interferograms from 12 ERS tandem mission Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired in austral fall of 1996. Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry profiles acquired in the same season as the SAR scenes in 2004 are used as ground control points (GCPs) for Interferometric SAR (InSAR) DEM generation. 20 additional ICESat profiles acquired in 2003-2004 are then used to assess the accuracy of the DEM. The vertical accuracy of the OEM is estimated by comparing elevations with laser altimetry data from ICESat. The mean height difference between all ICESat data and DEM is -0.57m with a standard deviation of 5.88m. We demonstrate that ICESat elevations can be successfully used as GCPs to improve the accuracy of an InSAR derived DEM. In addition, the magnitude and the direction of tidal changes estimated from interferogram are compared with those predicted tidal differences from four ocean tide models. Tidal deformation measured in InSAR is -16.7cm and it agrees well within 3cm with predicted ones from tide models. Lastly, ice surface velocity is estimated by combining speckle matching technique and InSAR line-of-sight measurement. This study shows that the maximum speed and mean speed are 509 m/yr and 131 m/yr, respectively. Our results can be useful for the mass balance study in this area and sea level change.
