It was in the mid-1980s when the shipboard noise analysis was introduced to the Korean shipbuilding industry. Since then through the continued efforts of the industries in the last decades, native computational codes dedicated to the shipboard noise prediction have been developed based on empirical formula and/or sophisticated theories such as SEA and PFM. This paper addresses some problems in dealing with predicting shipboard noise and the way how to overcome the uncertainties in the prediction.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is effective and relatively safe method providing nutrients to patients with a nonfunctioning or insufficiently functioning gastrointestinal tract via peripheral or central vein. In last several decades, useful steps have been taken in the understanding of nutritional needs, physiological changes and complications of intravenously fed patients. PN includes amino acids, glucose, lipids, electrolytes, vitamins, iron, minerals and trace elements, and must be based on individual circumstances such as patient's age, health status and disease. The purpose of this review is to introduce overall components and recent updates of parenteral nutrition.

Tetrapeptide FMRFamide, originally isolated and then characterized from the mollusc (Clam) Macrocallista, had been demonstrated to have action as a cardioexcitatory agent. During the next two decades since its discover, neuropeptide FMRFamide and a large family of related peptides have been shown to exist in the central nervous system and gut of a wide variety of invertebrates and vertebrates including insect species. Continuous efforts have been made to transform industrial technologies possessed by private sector for national defense purposes over decades. Among these efforts, the unification programs between military and commercial specifications resulted in cost reduction and high efficiency of military supplies. In this paper, we study the unification of reliability specifications, which seems to have been widely used for military and commercial fields. We also propose a method of developing an unified reliability specification for electro-mechanical relays.

The Kalman filter is an optimal linear estimator that has been an active research topic for the past three decades. The scheme has become the milestone of modern filtering, and it is applied to many areas including navigations and controls of free vehicle. The Kalman filter technique is matured. But some problems are still remained to be resolved. The prevention of divergence induced by digital implementation, nonoptimal application for nonlinear system, and application to non-Gaussian processes are some of the problems. This paper surveys the problems. The square root filtering is suggested to prevent the divergence. The extended Kalman filter is used for nonlinear systems. And, many other approaches to Kalman-like optimal estimators are also investigated.

Construction incidents, mechanisms and causes in Geotechnical Engineering have been closely reviewed for the safety assurance during design and construction stages. The safety assurance is clearly related to the observational method in which design is reviewed during construction and contingency actions are undertaken successfully to minimise any potential failures. The observational method has been extensively applied for the construction of subways underground structures, dams and many important Civil Engineering projects in the past 20 years. But the number of serious construction incidents are growing for the past several decades. Therefore present development of observational method and improvement techniques are introduced with some case histories.

Solid-liquid phase change (i.e. melting or solidification) occurs in a number of situations of practical interest. Some common examples include the melting of edible oil, metallurgical process such as casting and welding, and materials science applications such as crystal growth. Therefore, due to the practical importance of the subject, there have been a large number of experimental and numerical studies of problems involving phase change during the past few decades. Also, this study presented the effective way to enhance phase change heat transfer.

As economy and population have been growing, air pollution problems both in local and regional scale came to the surface in East Asia in last decades. In addition to urban problems, regional air pollution is also becoming a big issue international concern. Urban and regional air pollution issues are closely related and we have to tackle the problem by understanding underlying scientific reality and taking a strategic approach to mitigation. (omitted)

Burkitt lymphoma, which was described by Dennis Burkitt in 1958, is characterized as a diffuse undifferentiated lymphoma. It afflicts children of the 1st or 2nd decades, and usually presents as a jaw or abdominal tumor. The author experienced a case of Burkitt lymphoma in a 30-year-old female, whose right mandible and ascending colon were afflicted, and discussed the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features with brief review of literatures.

The author had observed 48 cases diagnosed as oral malignancies of the patients who visited to the infirmary of Dental College of Seoul National University from 1973 to July 1976. The following results were obtained. 1. 5 decades age group showed the highest incidence and there was hardly difference in sex. 2. From the histopathological view point, most of cases were squamous cell carcinoma. 3. Most of cases were considerably in advance and showed the bony destruction not only primary site, but of surrounding structures.
