This paper proposes a single-phase non-isolated onboard battery charger (OBC) for electric vehicles (EVs) that only uses small film capacitors at the DC-link of the AC-DC converter. In the proposed charger, an isolated DC-DC converter for low-voltage batteries is used as an active power decoupling (APD) circuit to absorb the ripple power when a high-voltage (HV) battery is charged. As a result, the DC-link capacitance in the AC-DC converter of the HV charging circuit can be significantly reduced without requiring any additional devices. In addition, some of the components of the proposed circuit are shared in common for the different operating modes among the AC-DC converter, LV charging circuit and active power filter. Therefore, the cost and volume of the onboard battery charger can be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed topology has been verified by the simulation and experimental results.
Using the ESS(Energy Storage System) as a UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) is being studied recently. When the system is operating at UPS mode in integrated ESS and UPS system, the grid supplying power is disconnected and power from PV generation and battery are supplying to load. Operating in UPS mode, when PV generation power is diminished by partial or total clouded situation, DC-link voltage fluctuates. The fluctuation of DC-link voltage influences the load and system as sensitive loads may malfunction. This paper suggests the DC-link ripple voltage compensation algorithm in bi-directional converter. The algorithm stabilize the DC-link and load voltage.
In this paper, a control algorithm for DC-Link voltage unbalancing compensation of a four-switch inverter for a three-phase BLDC motor drive is proposed. Compared with a conventional six-switch inverter, the split source of the four-switch inverter can be obtained by splitting DC-link capacitor into two capacitors to drive the three phase BLDC motor. The voltages across each of two capacitors are not always equal in steady state because of the unbalance in the impedance of the DC-link capacitors $C_1$ and $C_2$ or the variable current flowed into the capacitor's neutral point in motor control. Despite the unbalance, if the BLDC motor may be run for a long time the voltage across one of the capacitors is more increased. So the unbalance in the capacitors voltages will be accelerated. As a result, The current ripple and torque ripple is increased due to the fluctuation of input current which flows into 3-phase BLDC motor. According to that, the vibration of motor will be increased and the whole system will be instable. This paper presents a control algorithm for DC-Link voltage unbalancing compensation. The sampling from the voltages across each of two capacitors is used to perform the voltage control of DC-Link by using the feedforward controller.
This paper proposes a new method for the current ripple reduction of a three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter. Usually, the three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter is used for battery charging and discharging to reduce battery current ripple. In V2G application, a PWM AC-DC converter is used to connect the AC power grid and three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter for battery charging and discharging. The magnitude of DC link voltage affects the battery current ripple magnitude. Therefore, the magnitude of the battery ripple current is analyzed with variations of battery and DC link voltages. The ripple current magnitude is found to be minimized by controlling the DC link voltage. Simulation and experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed method.

This study proposes a finite-state model predictive controller to regulate the load current and balance the DC-link capacitor voltages of a four-leg neutral-point-clamped converter. The discrete-time model of the converter, DC-link, inductive filter, and load is used to predict the future behavior of the load currents and the DC-link capacitor voltages for all possible switching states. The switching state that minimizes the cost function is selected and directly applied to the converter. The cost function is defined to minimize the error between the predicted load currents and their references, as well as to balance the DC-link capacitor voltages. Moreover, the current regulation performance is improved by using a two-step prediction horizon. The feasibility of the proposed predictive control scheme for different references and loads is verified through real-time implementation on the basis of dSPACEDS1103.
This paper proposes a capacitance estimation method of the dc-link capacitor for brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drive systems. In order to estimate the dc-link capacitance, the BLDCM is operated in quadrant-II or -IV among four-quadrant operation. Quadrant-II and -IV are called reverse braking and forward braking, respectively. During the braking operation of the BLDCM, the capacitor is charged by the phase current and then the voltage is increased during the braking operation time. The capacitor current and voltage can be obtained by using the phase current sensor of BLDCM and the dc-link voltage sensor. The capacitance and be easily obtained by the voltage equation of the capacitor. The proposed method guarantees the reliable and simple calculation of the dc-link capacitance without additional hardware system except several the sensors already installed for the motor control system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through both the simulation and experimental results.
This paper presents a novel three-phase current-fed Pulse Width Modulation converter with switched capacitor type resonant DC link commutation circuit operating PWM pattern strategy under a design consideration of low-pass filter, which can operate on the basis of the principle of zero current soft switching commutation. In the first place, the steady state operating principle of this converter with a new resonant DC link snubber circuit is described in connection with the equivalent operation circuit, together with the practical design procedure of the switched-capacitor type resonant DC link circuit is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint on the basis of a design example for high-power applications. The actively delayed time correction method to compensate distorted currents due to a relatively long resonant commutation time is newly implemented in the open loop control scheme so as to acquire the new optimum PWM pattern. Finally, the experiment of set-up in laboratory system of this converter is concretely demonstrated herein to confirm a zero current soft-switching commutation of this converter. The comparative evaluations between current-fed hard switching PWM and soft-switching PWM converters are carried out from a viewpoint of their PWM converter characteristics.
Given the constraint of the AC input power factor and the DC-link voltage and current ripple in voltage source inverter, minimizing the size and cost of the DC-link fitter components is very important. This paper presents a procedure for the selection of DC-link filler element values in a three-phase PWM voltage source inverter-fed induction motor drive system, which can not only satisfy the requirements for the system performance but also minimize the filter size.
When a PWM rectifier has a low DC-link voltage during startup, the output voltage vector cannot be high enough to regulate the input current. This lack of a PWM rectifier output voltage vector can cause an unregulated inrush current when the rectifier operation starts. This paper presents a PWM rectifier start-up current control algorithm for when it starts operation with a lower DC-link voltage than unloaded condition case. To avoid the unregulated inrush current caused by a lack of DC-link voltage, the proposed control scheme regulates the one phase current with one switch chopping and it generates the current command considering the uncontrolled current magnitude information, which is calculated in advance. Simulation and experiment results support the validity of the proposed method.
