  • The propulsion for locomotive application has changed from the DC motor system to the induction motor system. Although the induction motor system has almost reached the stage of maturity, this system also needs to be changed to the PM motor system for the direct drive without using reduction gear. Thus, the IPMSM (Interior buried Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) has been adopted to meet the locomotive driving specification. Where the wheel is directly dirven by the traction motor. In this paper, the investigation on IPMSM satisfying driving specifications for the direct drive has been performed using the advanced FEM.

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEVs) have seriously come into prevalence recently as car manufacturers and consumers have become more aware of the environmental and economic problems of conventional vehicles. For the alternative power-train and battery cooling systems in HEVs, an effective thermal management system is required, and many automakers are interested in using Brushless DC(BLDC) motors for cooling fans for the overall traction unit's performance and energy saving capability. This paper presents the development status of BLDC motors as major parts of the power-train, i.e. the engine cooling and battery cooling fans of HEVs. A design that uses BLDC motors for the power-train and each battery cooling fan, is successfully implemented through using electro-magnetic analysis, and prototype BLDC motors are examined. As experimental results, the BLDC motors achieved an efficiency of 85% as engine cooling fans and 72% as a battery thermal management fan motor. The electric cogging noise is significantly reduced by changing the skew of the slot pitch angle and optimizing the magnetic shape.

  • We propose a variable frame structure connected with telescopic mast-shaped shaft for a robot displaying outstanding ability to cross obstacles, and for effective traction control. The wireless control system was built to extend and contract a deployable mechanism, which is shaped into a hoberman sphere assembled with frame structures. In order to develop important parameters for efficient locomotion, we derived an Euler-Lagrange equation for the spherical robot. According to the equation, the DC motor was selected. A prototype mechanism was tested and a Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted in parallel. Using these data, we constructed a deployable spherical robot with structural stability. The deployable robot moved at a speed of 0.85 m/s from 520 mm to 650 mm.

  • This paper proposes the structure of a smart transformer to improve the performance of the 60Hz main power transformer for rolling stock. The proposed smart transformer is a kind of solid state transformer that consists of semiconductor switching devices and high frequency transformers. This smart transformer would have smaller size than the conventional 60Hz main transformer for rolling stock, making it possible to operate AC electrified track efficiently by power factor control. The proposed structure employs a cascade H-Bridge converter to interface with the high voltage AC single phase grid as the rectifier part. Each H-Bridge converter in the rectifier part is connected by a Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter to generate an isolated low voltage DC output source of the system. Because the AC voltage in the train system is a kind of medium voltage, the number of the modules would be several tens. To control the entire smart transformer, the inner DC voltage of the modules, the AC input current, and the output DC voltage must be controlled instantaneously. In this paper, a control algorithm to operate the proposed structure is suggested and confirmed through computer simulation.

  • In this study, an optimal design for motor-driven track type traveling system applied into high clearance working machineries in orchard is proposed. Tractive performance and hill climbing ability were predicted and evaluated for the optimal motor traveling system by taking into account of soil characteristics in orchard utilizing the high clearance working machineries. Design criteria for tractive performance were based on the traction force calculated from tractive effort subtracted by motion resistance, while hill climbing ability had its design criteria that fulfill the climbing 20% slope ground at a speed of 3km/h. Based on the evaluation results of traction and climbing ability, two DC48V, 4500rpm, 1.6kW AC motors were independently applied to both left and right side of orbits; each motor is designed to transmit power on driving sprocket of track type traveling system via 50:1 reduction gear ratio. The motor-driven track type traveling system developed in the study found to have 396 kgf of tractive force, which is 12.5% higher than climbing resistance at orchard soil having 20% slope ground (352 kgf), demonstrating sufficient tractive performance and hill climbing ability.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • A newly-built inverter has to undergo a series of stress tests in the final stage of production line. This can be achieved by connecting it to a dynamometer consisting of a three-phase machine joined by a rigid shaft to a DC load machine. The latter is controlled to create some specific load characteristic needed for the test. In this paper a test method is proposed, in which no mechanical equipment is needed. The suggested test stand consists only of a inverter to be tested and a simulator converter. Both devices are connected back- to-back on the AC-side via smoothing reactors. The simulator operates in real-time as an equivalent load circuit, so that the device under test will only notice the behaviour of a three-phase machine under consideration of the load. In odor to wove rightness of the suggested test method, the simulation and actural experiment rallied out emulation for a 2.2kW induction motor.

  • In this paper a gearless drive system using a permanent-maget synchronous motor for high speed elevators is addressed. The application of permanent magnet synchronous motor to an elevator traction machine enables several improvements including higher efficiency better ride comfort smaller size and lighter weight and so on A PWM boost converter has been also adopted so that DC-link voltage regulation bi-directional power flow and controllable power factor with reduced input current harmonics are possible. To increase the reliability and performance of overall control system the unified control board which can include the car and group controller as well as PWN converter/inverter controller has been designed based on a DSP TMS320VV33. In addition the dynamic load simulator system has been developed so that the drive system of high speed elevator can be tested and evaluated without and limitation on ride distance. Some experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the developed system.
