Power electronics modules are semiconductor components that are widely used in airplanes, trains, automobiles, and energy generation and conversion facilities. In particular, insulated gate bipolar transistors(IGBT) have been widely utilized in high power and fast switching applications for power management including power supplies, uninterruptible power systems, and AC/DC converters. In these days, IGBT are the predominant power semiconductors for high current applications in electrical and hybrid vehicles application. In these application environments, the physical conditions are often severe with strong electric currents, high voltage, high temperature, high humidity, and vibrations. Therefore, IGBT module packages involves a number of challenges for the design engineer in terms of reliability. Thermal and thermal-mechanical management are critical for power electronics modules. The failure mechanisms that limit the number of power cycles are caused by the coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the materials used in the IGBT modules. All interfaces in the module could be locations for potential failures. Therefore, a proper thermal design where the temperature does not exceed an allowable limit of the devices has been a key factor in developing IGBT modules. In this paper, we discussed the effects of various package materials on heat dissipation and thermal management, as well as recent technology of the new package materials.

In this paper, a chattering alleviation VSS controller for the sinusoidal type BLDC motor is designed. Dead Zone function is proposed to change the chattering occurring in the transient state from high frequency to low frequency and time varying gains arc applied for the control input to eliminate the steady state excessive chattering in the conventional ISM. The proposed Dead Zone function represents the sliding layer composed of two switching surfaces and if a state vector exists in this layer, the chattering don't occur. Simulation and experimental results confirm the useful effects of the above algorithm.

Matrix converters have been studied for eliminating dc link of conventional converter-inverter system, and various undulation strategy have been proposed. Therefore, matrix converter have no energy storage component except for small ac later for the elimination of switching ripple, and can be made compact and highly reliable compare with the do link inverter system. Matrix converter, however, directly connected the input and the output terminals by bidirectional static switch. As a result if the input voltage are asymmetrical, and contain harmonics, the influence of the distortions directly appear on the output terminal. This problem is a major obstacle to the matrix converter. A new control method using average comparison strategy have been proposed in this paper. This control method realizes sinusoidal input and output current unity input displacement factor regardless of load power factor. Moreover, compensation of the asymmetrical and/or harmonic containing input voltage is automatically realized, and calculation time of control function is reduced.

This paper presents a application of vector control strategy to 1.2MVA traction drive for railway vehicle. The vector control required the control of the phase and amplitude of output voltage vector. But in case of traction system for railway vehicle, the one-pulse mode is used at high speed region in order to utilize the link voltage fully. So it is impossible to control the flux and torque axis current instantaneously and independently in the region. So this paper proposes a mixed control algorithm, where the vector control strategy at low speed region and slip-frequency control strategy at high speed region is used. And precise switching technique between the two different control strategy is proposed. The proposed strategy is verified by experimental results with a 1.2MVA traction drive system with four 210kW induction motors.

In this paper, a reconfigurable polarization patch antenna that uses a Y-shaped feed is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a square patch, a Y-shaped feeding structure, a PIN diode, and a bias circuit for diode operation. The structural symmetry/asymmetry of the feeding structure is determined by the on/off operation of the PIN diode that inserted into the side of one of the lines of the Y-shaped feeding structure. For the proposed reconfigurable antenna, the two microstrip lines of the feeding structure have the same length when the PIN diode operates in the on state, and the antenna exhibits linear polarization(LP). On the other hand, when the PIN diode operates in the off state, the length of one side line of the feeding structure is relatively shorter than that of the other line. Therefore, the antenna exhibits circular polarization(CP). From the measurement results, it is found that the proposed antenna exhibits good impedance matching and axial ratio. In addition, polarization switching can be easily achieved in the same operating band.

We have demonstrated a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ electro-optic electric-field sensors utilizing a $1{\times}2$ Y-fed balanced-bridge Mach-Zehnder interferometric (YBB-MZI) modulator which uses a 3-dB directional coupler at the output and dipole patch antenna. The operation and design were proved by the BPM simulation. A dc switching voltage of ~16.6 V and an extinction ratio of ~14.7 dB are observed at a wavelength of $1.3{\mu}m$. For a 20 dBm rf power, the minimum detectable electric-fields are ~1.12 V/m and ~3.3 V/m corresponding to a dynamic range of about ~22 dB and ~18 dB at frequencies 10 MHz and 50 MHz, respectively. The sensors exhibit almost linear response for the applied electric-field intensity from 0.29 V/m to 29.8 V/m.
The current paper presents a novel control strategy of a three-phase, four-wire Unified Power Quality (UPQC) to improve power quality. The UPQC is realized by the integration of series and shunt active power filters (APF) sharing a common dc bus capacitor. The realization of shunt APF is carried out using a three-phase, four-leg Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), and the series APF is realized using a three-phase, three-leg VSI. To extract the fundamental source voltages as reference signals for series APF, a zero-crossing detector and sample-and-hold circuits are used. For the control of shunt APF, a simple scheme based on the real component of fundamental load current (I $Cos{\Phi}$) with reduced numbers of current sensors is applied. The performance of the applied control algorithm is evaluated in terms of power-factor correction, source neutral current mitigation, load balancing, and mitigation of voltage and current harmonics in a three-phase, four-wire distribution system for different combinations of linear and non-linear loads. The reference signals and sensed signals are used in a hysteresis controller to generate switching signals for shunt and series APFs. In this proposed UPQC control scheme, the current/voltage control is applied to the fundamental supply currents/voltages instead of fast-changing APF currents/voltages, thus reducing the computational delay and the required sensors. MATLAB/Simulink-based simulations that support the functionality of the UPQC are obtained.

In a conventional DC power supply used for CO2 laser, the circuit elements such as a rectifier bridge, a current-limiting resistor, a high voltage switch, energy storage capacitors ans a high-voltage isolation transformer using high turn ratio are necessary. Consequently, those supplies are expensive and require a large space. Thus, laser resonator and power supply should be optimally designed. In this paper, we propose a new power supply using high frequency resonance phenomena for CW(Continuous wave) CO2 laser (maximum output of 23W with discharge length of 450mm). It consists of a transformer including leakage inductance, magnetizing inductance and half-bridge converter, a three-stage Cockcroft-Walton and PFC(Power factor correction) circuit. The output ripple voltage can be controlled the minimum of 0.24% under the high frequency switching of 231kHz. Furthermore, the output efficiency was improved to 16.4% and the laser output stability of about 5.6% was obtained in this laser system.

We present a new technological concept named RCP (Robotic Cellular Phone), which combines RT and CP. That is an ubiquitous robot. RCP consists of 3 sub-modules, RCP Mobility, RCP interaction, and RCP Integration. RCP Interaction is the main focus of this paper. It is an interactive emotion system which provides CP with multi-emotional signal receiving functionalities. RCP Interaction is linked with communication functions of CP in order to interface between CP and user through a variety of emotional models. It is divided into a tactile, an olfactory and a visual mode. The tactile signal receiving module is designed by patterns and beat frequencies which are made by mechanical-vibration conversion of the musical melody, rhythm and harmony. The olfactory signal receiving module is designed by switching control of perfume-injection nozzles which are able to give the signal receiving to the CP-called user through a special kind of smell according to the CP-calling user. The visual signal receiving module is made by motion control of DC-motored wheel-based system which can inform the CP-called user of the signal receiving through a desired motion according to the CP-calling user. In this paper, a prototype system is developed far multi-emotional signal receiving modes of CP. We describe an overall structure of the system and provide experimental results of the functional modules.
An electrochromatographic microchip with carboxyl-group-derivatized mono-disperse silica packing was prepared from the corresponding colloidal silica solution by utilizing capillary action and self-assembly behavior. The silica beads in water were primed by the capillary action toward the ends of cross-patterned microchannel on a cyclic olefinic copolymer (COC) substrate. Slow evaporation of water at the front of packing promoted the self-assembled packing of the beads. After thermally binding a cover plate on the chip substrate, reservoirs for sample solutions were fabricated at the ends of the microchannel. The packing at the entrances of the microchannel was silver coated to fix utilizing an electroless silver-plating technique to prevent the erosion of the packed structure caused by the sudden switching of a high voltage DC power source. The electrochromatographic behavior of the microchip was explored and compared to that of the microchip with bare silica packing in basic borate buffer. Electrophoretic migration of Rhodamine B was dominant in the microchip with the carboxyl-derivatized silica packing that resulted in a migration approximated twice as fast, while the reversible adsorption was dominant in the bare silica-packed microchip. Not only the faster migration rates of the negatively charged FITC-derivatives of amino acids but also the different migration due to the charge interaction at the packing surface were observed. The electrochromatographic characteristics were studied in detail and compared with those of the bare silica packed microchip in terms of the packing material, the separation potential, pH of the running buffer, and also the separation channel length.
