  • This paper proposes a comparison of Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) and Direct Power Control (DPC) under command mode transition for PMSG Wind Turbines (WT). Based on a neutral point clamped three level back to back type Voltage Source Converter (VSC), proposed control scheme automatically control the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. Automatic command mode transition based on the dc-link voltage error provides a command mode changing between grid command and MPPT mode. It is confirmed through PLECS simulations in Matlab. Simulation result shows that proposed control scheme of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control scheme of MPPT with optimal torque control and VOC under a step response. The proposed control scheme makes it possible to provide a good dynamic performance for PMSG wind turbines in order to generate a high quality output power.

  • This paper proposes a new NLC (Nearest Level Control) scheme for MMCs (Modular Multilevel Converters), which offers voltage ripple reductions in the DC capacitor of the SM (Sub-Module), the output voltage harmonics, and the switching losses. The feasibility of the proposed NLC was verified through computer simulations. Based on these simulation results, a hardware prototype of a 10kVA, DC-1000V MMC was manufactured in the lab. Experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed NLC in an actual hardware environment. The experimental results were consistent with the results obtained from the computer simulations.

  • The independently regulated dual-output LLC resonant converter using only one power stage and one control IC is proposed in this paper. The conventional dual-output LLC resonant converter requires the extra non-isolated DC/DC converter to obtain the tightly regulated slave output voltage, which results in the low power conversion efficiency and high production costs. On the other hand, since the proposed converter controls the master and slave output voltages by pulse width modulation(PWM) and pulse frequency modulation(PFM), it can achieve tightly regulated dual output voltages without the additional non-isolated DC/DC converter. Therefore, it features a high efficiency and low cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a 40W LED driver prototype are presented.

  • Diode and thyristor-based bridge converter have been used for ac/dc conversion. Comparatively, diode bridges are simpler, more robust, less expensive and have a better power factor. However when voltage regulation is required, the thyristor-based phase-controlled converter have been used. But their use is limited by the low power factor and considerable harmonics in the input and output. An ac/dc power conversion scheme capable of fine output voltage control is investigated in this paper.

  • Recently, the installation of photovoltaic(PV) systems has been increasing due to the worldwide interest in eco-friendly and abundant solar energy. On the other hand, a PV system has approximately 25% power loss while the energy generated from solar cells is transformed to the power coupling point through a power conversion system (DC/AC). If the output voltage of a string in the PV system is lower than the operating range of the inverter when a part of module in the string has a shadow due to weather conditions, the string is not synchronized and the whole efficiency of output power in a PV system may be reduced significantly. Therefore, to overcome this problem, this paper proposes a novel control method to compensate for the lower voltage by introducing a DC/DC voltage regulator for each string in a PV system, which adopts a concept for MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) control function using the P&O algorithm and adopts constant voltage control method used in an existing inverter. This paper also implements a 2kW DC/DC voltage regulator based on the proposed algorithm and performs a variety of scenario-based experiments. From the simulation result, it was confirmed that the operation efficiency in the proposed method is improved compared to the existing method.

  • This study applies the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) technique to design and operate a regulated AC/DC/AC power supply suitable for maritime military applications and underground trains. The input is a single 50/60 Hz AC voltage, and the output is a 400 Hz regulated voltage. The switching angles for a multi-level inverter and transformer turns ratio are determined to operate with special connected transformers with equal power ratings and produce an almost sinusoidal current. As a result of its capability of directly controlling harmonics, the SHE technique is applicable to apparatus with congenital immunity to specific harmonics, such as series-connected transformers, which are specially designed to equally share the total load power. In the present work, a single-phase 50/60 Hz input source is rectified via a semi-controlled bridge rectifier to control DC voltage levels and thereby regulate the output load voltage at a constant level. The DC-rectified voltage then supplies six single-phase quazi-square H-bridge inverters, each of which supplies the primary of a single-phase transformer. The secondaries of the six transformers are connected in series. Through off-line calculation, the switching angles of the six inverters and the turns ratios of the six transformers are designed to ensure equal power distribution for the transformers. The SHE technique is also employed to eliminate the higher-order harmonics of the output voltage. A digital implementation is carried out to determine the switching angles. Theoretical results are demonstrated, and a scaled-down experimental 600 VA prototype is built to verify the validity of the proposed system.

  • The control method of the bidirectional DC/DC converter for instantaneous regenerative current control is described in this paper. The general method to control the DC/DC converter is the output voltage control. However, the regenerative current cannot be controlled to be constant with this control method. To improve the performance of the conventional control method, the DC-link voltage of the inverter is controlled within the tolerance range by the instantaneous boost and buck operations of the bidirectional DC/DC converter. By the proposed control method, the battery current can be controlled to be constant regardless of the motor speed variation. The improved performance of the DC/DC converter controlled by the proposed control method is verified by the experiment and simulation of the system with the inverter and IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) which is operated by the reduced practical speed profile.

  • In order to radiate X-ray, the low ripple stabilized high voltage DC over the range of 40KV to 150KV is directly inflicted to X-ray tube. The energy characteristics of the radiated X-ray depend on the pulsating waveforms of the DC voltage supplied X-ray tube. In general, the low ripple voltage waveforms with fast rising times are required to increase with the dosage per unit time lest the exposure time should be longer in orde that the motion artifacts of an object may be eliminated in actual. The conventional types of X-ray generators were bulky in physical size and heavy in weight, and the control accuracies of the output voltages were not always satisfactory. The high frequency switching inverter and converter technology on power conversion and control systems have been greatly closed up introducing new power semiconductor devices. To decreasing the volume and the weight of high voltage transformer, and to stabilize ripple, a high frequency PWM inverter is connected between DC source and high voltage transformer. This paper describes the output characteristics according to stabilize ripple of X-ray tube voltage and compared the reproducibility, direcibility and doesage.

  • The author present a modified multi-loop algorithm Including feedforward for controlling a 55kW stepdown chopper in the power supply of Maglev The gains of the control algorithm were selected based on pole locations formulated from a prototype Bessel transfer function model. The design incorporate tradeoffs in DC-to-DC converter hard-ware para-meters and pole locations. This perturvation is derived by subtracting the desired output voltage from the actual output voltage. The proportional and integral action stabilizes the system and minimizes output voltage error. In order to verify the validity of the proposed multi-loop controller, simulation study was tried using Matlab simulink.
