  • We have designed an extended L-band Erbium-doped fiber amplifier to amplify 1625 nm optical time domain reflectometry signal for a long distance monitoring system. The proposed amplifier has a dual-stage structure without an isolator. Gain improvement of 5.1 dB has been achieved by adding a fiber Bragg grating and a narrow band pass filter. As a result, the 16.3 dB gain and 7.1 dB noise figure has been successfully accomplished.

  • Site response analysis is an important topic in earthquake engineering. A time-domain numerical method called as one-dimensional (1D) finite element artificial boundary method is proposed to simulate the homogeneous plane elastic wave propagation in a layered half space subjected to the obliquely incident plane body wave. In this method, an exact artificial boundary condition combining the absorbing boundary condition with the inputting boundary condition is developed to model the wave absorption and input effects of the truncated half space under layer system. The spatially two-dimensional (2D) problem consisting of the layer system with the artificial boundary condition is transformed equivalently into a 1D one along the vertical direction according to Snell's law. The resulting 1D problem is solved by the finite element method with a new explicit time integration algorithm. The 1D finite element artificial boundary method is verified by analyzing two engineering sites in time domain and by comparing with the frequency-domain transfer matrix method with fast Fourier transform.

  • Large-sized flat-panel displays are widely used for PC monitors and TV displays. In this paper, frequency domain pre-filter algorithms are presented for detection of defects in large-sized Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display(TFT-LCD) panel surfaces. Frequency analysis with 1-D, 2-D FFT methods for extract the periodic patterns of lattice structures in TFT-LCD is performed. To remove this patterns, frequency domain band-stop filters were used for eliminating specific frequency components. In order to acquire only defected images, 2-D inverse FFT methods to inverse transform of frequency domain images were used.

  • Three yeast strains (Hue-1, Hue-8, and Hue-19) with strong heavy metal tolerance were isolated from mangosteen from Hue city, Vietnam. They exhibited identical phenotype and phylogeny. Sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region demonstrated that the closest relative of these strains is Papiliotrema sp. with 2.12% and 3.55-3.7% divergence in the D1/D2 domain, and ITS domain, respectively. Based on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular data, the three strains belong to a novel species of Papiliotrema genus, for which the name Papiliotrema huenov sp. nov. is proposed. These strains are highly tolerant of heavy metals compared to other yeasts, being able to grow in the presence of 2 mM Pb (II), 2 mM Cd (II), and up to 5 mM Ni (II), but no growth was observed in the presence of 1 mM As (III).

  • A new time-domain decoder for Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is proposed. Because this decoder can correct both errors and erasures without computing the erasure locator, errata locator, or errata evaluator polynomials, the computational complexity can be substantially reduced. Herein, to demonstrate this benefit, complexity comparisons between the proposed decoder and the Truong-Jeng-Hung and Lin-Costello decoders are presented. These comparisons show that the proposed decoder consistently has lower computational requirements when correcting all combinations of ${\nu}$ errors and ${\mu}$ erasures than both of the related decoders under the condition of $2{\nu}+{\mu}{\leq}d_{\min}-1$, where $d_{min}$ denotes the minimum distance of the RS code. Finally, the (255, 223) and (63, 39) RS codes are used as examples for complexity comparisons under the upper bounded condition of min $2{\nu}+{\mu}=d_{\min}-1$. To decode the two RS codes, the new decoder can save about 40% additions and multiplications when min ${\mu}=d_{min}-1$ as compared with the two related decoders. Furthermore, it can also save 50% of the required inverses for min $0{\leq}{\mu}{\leq}d_{\min}-1$.

  • In this paper, a new adaptive perceptual filter using variable threshold to enhance audio signals degraded by additively nonstationary noise is proposed. The adaptive perceptual filter updates variable threshold each time according to the power of signal and the effect of noise variation. So the noisy audio signal is enhanced by the method which controls a residual noise effectively. The proposed algorithm uses the perceptual filter which transforms a time domain signal into frequency domain and calculates an intensity energy and an excitation energy in bark domain. In this method. the stage updated the response of filter is decided by threshold. The proposed algorithm using vairable threshold effectively controls a residual noise using the energy difference of audio signals degraded by the additive nonstationary noise. The proposed method is tested with the noisy audio signals degraded by nonstationary noise at various signal -to-noise ratios (SNR). We carry out NMR and MOS test when the input SNR is 15dB. 20dB. 25dB and 30dB. An approximate improvement of 17.4dB. 15.3dB, 12.8dB. 9.8dB in NMR and enhancement of 2.9, 2.5, 2.3, 1.7 in MOS test is achieved with the input signals. respectively.

  • The molecular taxonomic relationship of nine species in the genus Moniliella Stolk & Dakin and Trichosporonoides Haskins & Spencer and six species of other yea나-like fungi was examined by sequencing analysis of large subunit rDNA D1/D2 variable domain. The fifteeen species fell into two major groups corresponding with their genetic relationships. The nine species of the genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides were placed at the same cluster. similarity values based on the D1/D2 domain sequences were 45.4-100% among species of genus Moniliella, 45.2-84.4% among genus Trichosporonoides species, and 45.6-90.1% among species of genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides. Identical sequence similarity was observed between M. suaveolens var. nigra and M. suaveolens. A colse relationship of M. mellis. and M. acetoabutens is observed. The result of this study provided and insight into the genetic origins of genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides species as well as their genetic relationships. Genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides are closely related to each other based on sequence analysis of the large subunit rDNA D1/D2 region and we suggest combination of the genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides to single genus.

  • Let $H_1$ ($\Delta$, M) be the family of all 1-1 holomorphic mappings of the unit disk $\Delta\; \subset\; C$ into a complex manifold M. Following the method of Royden, Hahn introduces a new pseudo-differential metric $S_{M}$ on M. The present paper is to study the product property of the metric $S_{M}$ when M is given by the product of two domains $D_1$ and $D_2$ in the complex plane C, thus investigating the hyperbolicity of the product domain $D_1 \;\times\; D_2$ with respect to $S_{M}$ metric.

  • Let $D_1,\;D_2$ be convex domains in complex normed spaces $E_1,\;E_2$ respectively. When a mapping $f\;:\;D_1{\rightarrow}D_2$ is holomorphic with f(0) = 0, we obtain some results like the Schwarz lemma. Furthermore, we discuss a condition whereby f is linear or injective or isometry.
