During the past few years, design of experiments (DOE) has been gaining acceptance in the telecommunications research community as a mean for designing and analyzing experiments economically and efficiently. In addition, the need for introducing a systematic robust design methodology (i.e., one of the most popular DOE methodologies) to network simulations has been increasing. In this paper, we present an architecture of voice over IP (VoIP) application and the E-Model for calculating the perceived quality of service (QoS). Then, we apply the Taguchi robust design methodology to optimize the perceived QoS of VoIP application, and describe the detailed step-by-step procedures. We have used ns-2 simulator to collect experimental data in which the SN ratio, a robustness measure, is analyzed to determine an optimal design condition. The analysis shows that "initial delay time in playout buffer" is a major control factor for ensuring robust behaviors of the perceived QoS of VoIP. Finally, we verify the proposed optimal design condition using a confirmation experiment.

The specifications needed for the mobile cranes are summarized as the following : 1) there may be not occured the oscillation of the cargo at unloading point. 2)the required time from departure point to destination point may be as short as possible. 3) there may be not a collapse of cargo caused by the oscillation in the course that the crago is mobilling. In this paper, the linear fractional transformation method is adopted as a method in order to improve the above mentioned problems. A design method of servo system is developed by modifying Davison's method for the case that the homogeneous differential equations of reference input and disturbance are different types. The real time control of a mobile crane system is implemented by 16bits microcomputer with A/D and D/A converters to illustrate the application of the adopted method. The experimental results for the three types of the design methods; linear fractional transformation method, servo system design method and optimal control method are shown for the comparison.
In this study, the response surface method and experimental design were applied as an alternative to conventional methods for the optimization of coagulation tests. A central composite design, with 4 axial points, 4 factorial points and 5 replicates at the center point were used to build a model for predicting and optimizing the coagulation process. Mathematical model equations were derived by computer simulation programming with a least squares method using the Minitab 15 software. In these equations, the removal efficiencies of turbidity and total organic carbon (TOC) were expressed as second-order functions of two factors, such as alum dose and coagulation pH. Statistical checks (ANOVA table, $R^2$ and $R^2_{adj}$ value, model lack of fit test, and p value) indicated that the model was adequate for representing the experimental data. The p values showed that the quadratic effects of alum dose and coagulation pH were highly significant. In other words, these two factors had an important impact on the turbidity and TOC of treated water. To gain a better understanding of the two variables for optimal coagulation performance, the model was presented as both 3-D response surface and 2-D contour graphs. As a compromise for the simultaneously removal of maximum amounts of 92.5% turbidity and 39.5% TOC, the optimum conditions were found with 44 mg/L alum at pH 7.6. The predicted response from the model showed close agreement with the experimental data ($R^2$ values of 90.63% and 91.43% for turbidity removal and TOC removal, respectively), which demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in achieving good predictions, while minimizing the number of experiments required.

This research aims to examine accuracy and efficiency of the first four moments corresponding to mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis, which are estimated by a function approximation moment method (FAMM). In FAMM, the moments are estimated from an approximating quadratic function of a system response function. The function approximation is performed on a specially selected experimental region for accuracy, and the number of function evaluations is taken equal to that of the unknown coefficients for efficiency. For this purpose, three error-minimizing conditions are utilized and corresponding canonical experimental regions constructed accordingly. An interpolation function is then obtained using a D-optimal design and then the first four moments of it are obtained as the estimates for the system response function. In order to verify accuracy and efficiency of FAMM, several non-linear examples are considered including a polynomial of order 4, an exponential function, and a rational function. The moments calculated from various coefficients of variation show very good accuracy and efficiency in comparison with those from analytic integration or the Monte Carlo simulation and the experimental design technique proposed by Taguchi and updated by D'Errico and Zaino.
Brake tube is considered one of the most important parts in automobile. The shape of brake tube end has a great influence on the function of brake, and the quality and productivity of brake tube have relation to die design. The forming process of brake tube end is performed by hydraulic press forming machine. In this paper, the forming processes of tube end for automobile is analyzed and designed to make the optimal form of brake tube end. Also, finite element analysis has been carried out using $DEFORM^{TM}% 3D to predict the optimal shape of brake tube end and the results obtained showed the optimal length between punch and chuck is $1.0{\sim}1.2mm$. The shape of tube end is in good agreement with the finite element simulations and the experimental results.

Optimal designs of a 3-point and a 4-point engine mount system are presented for reducing the idle shake of a Front Wheel Drive(FWD) vehicle. Design variables used in this study are the locations, the angles and the stiffness of an engine mount system. The goal of the optimization is minimizing the transmitted force without violating the constraints such as static weight sag, resonant frequency and side limits of design variables. The Augmented Lagrange Multiplier(ALM) Method is used for solving the nonlinear constrained optimization. The generalized Jacobi and the impedence method are employed for a free vibration analysis and a forced response analysis. The trend of analysis results well meet that of the experimental results. The optimization results reveal that the 4-point system transmits less torque than the 3-point system. It is also found from the design sensitivity analysis that the vibration characteristics of the 4-point system is less sensitive than those of the 3-point system.

A numerical optimization has been carried out to determine the shape of the three-dimensional channel with oblique ribs attached on both walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Numerical results fur heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. four dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, streamwise rib distance on opposite wall to rib pitch ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related coefficients with a weighting factor. D-optimal method is used to determine the training points as a means of design of experiment. Sensitivity of the objective parameters to each design variable has been analyzed. And, optimal values of the design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.
An analysis and design method for reducing aerodynamic noise in high-speed trains based on biomimetics of noiseless flight of owl is proposed. Five factors related to the morphology of the flight feather have been selected, and the candidate optimal shape of the flight feather is determined. The turbulent flow field analysis demonstrates that the optimal shape leads to diminished vortex formation by causing separation of the flow as well as allowing the fluid to climb up along the surface of the flight feather. To determine the effect of scaling of the owl's flight feather on the noise reduction, a two-fold and a four-fold scaled up model of the feather are constructed, and the numerical simulations are carried out to obtain the aerodynamic noise levels for each scale. Original model is found to reduce the noise level by 10 dBA, while two-fold increase in length dimensions reduces the noise by 12 dBA. Validation of numerical solution using wind tunnel experimental measurements is presented as well.

New layout methods for implementing MOS switches of ultra low channel resistance are presented. These area-effective layout methods include the waffle structure, zipper structure, star zag structure and fingered waffle structure. The design equations for these new layout structures are analyzed. The area-effectiveness of these structures is compared with that of the conventional alternating bar structure. MOS switches of the waffle structure were fabricated using a standard 0.25um CMOS process. The experimental characterization results of the fabricated MOS switches are presented. The analytical comparison and experimental results show that area reductions over 40% are achievable with the new structures.

An experiment was conducted to determine the optimal inclusion ratio of spray dried plasma protein (SDPP) and dried porcine solubles (DPS) for maximizing growth and improving immunity in weaned pigs. One hundred-fifty male (barrow) pigs were allotted in a completely randomized block design. Treatments were as follows: 1) control (6% SDPP), 2) S6D6 (6% SDPP+6% DPS), 3) S6D3 (6% SDPP+3% DPS), 4) S3D6 (3% SDPP+6% DPS) and 5) S3D3 (3% SDPP+3% DPS). Each treatment has 6 replicates with 5 pigs per replicate. Average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were highest, but not significantly different when pigs were fed a diet contained 6% SDPP and DPS from d 0 to 7 after weaning. Pigs fed the S6D3 diet showed better weight gain and feed intake than other treatments, especially compared with pigs fed S3D6 diet (p<0.05) from d 8 to 21 after weaning. For the overall experimental period, pigs fed the S6D3 diet showed the best improvement in ADG and ADFI. The digestibilities of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) were higher in pigs fed the S6D6 diet than other diets from d 0 to 7 after weaning. However, pigs fed S6D3 diet showed higher DM, CP and essential amino acids (except methionine and arginine) digestibilities than pigs fed other diets from d 8 to 21 after weaning, although there was no significant difference. From d 8 to 21 after weaning, threonine, valine, isoleucine and leucine digestibilites were higher in S6D6 group, and phenyalanine, histidine, lysine and arginine digestibility were higher in S6D3 group than other groups. The ratio of CD4 and CD8 positive lymphocytes during the overall experimental period was independent of the ratio of SDPP and DPS. However, CD4+:CD8+ ratio was numerically lowered in pigs fed diet the S6D3 diet. Therefore, the present study suggests that an optimal inclusion ratio for maximizing growth performance and maintaining low immune status is 6% of SDPP and 3% of DPS in weaned pigs.
