  • To detect and prevent structural damage caused by various loads on marine structures and ships, structural health monitoring procedure is essential. Estimating loads acting on the structures which are measured by sensors that are mounted properly are crucial for structural health monitoring. However, attaching an excessive number of sensors to the structure without consideration can be inefficient due to the high costs involved and the potential for inducing structural instability. In this study, we introduce a method to determine the optimal number of sensors and their optimized locations for strain measurement sensors, allowing for accurate load estimation throughout the structure using model expansion method. To estimate the loads exerted on the entire structure with minimal sensors, we construct a strain-load interpolation matrix using the strain mode shapes of the finite element (FE) model and select the optimal sensor locations by applying D-Optimal Design and the row exchange algorithm. Finally, we estimate the loads exerted on the entire structure using the model expansion method. To validate the proposed method, we compare the results obtained by applying the optimal sensor placement and model expansion method to an FE model subjected to arbitrary loads with the loads exerted on the entire FE model, demonstrating efficiency and accuracy.

  • This paper presents the new adaptive optimal scheme for the nonlinear systems, which is based on the Picard's iterative approximation and fast Walsh transform. It is well known that the Walsh function approach method is very difficult to apply for the analysis and optimal control of nonlinear systems. However, these problems can be easily solved by the improvement of the previous adaptive optimal scheme. The proposed method is easily applicable to the analysis and optimal control of nonlinear systems.

  • This study describes the optimal design of shield to improve the insulation performance of vacuum interrupter(VI). Axi-symmetric finite element routine including floating boundary condition for shields was applied to analyze electric potential and field distribution in VI. A ($\mu-\lambda$) Evolution Strategy(ES) is employed as optimization method. Three design variables of shield are selected for minimizing the maximum electric field strength in VI. Finally, optimal solution for shield is obtained and compared with the result of the prototype.

  • In this paper we consider efficient 1-D and 2-D linear-phased half-band filter designs. We first introduce a new derivation of the existing Vaidynathan-Nguyen 's half-band filter design method, which verifies that the design provides optimal half-band filters. We then propose an approximately-linear-phased IIR half-band filter design method, which is based on the all-pass equalizer design with the linear phase -$\omega$/2. Finally, we propose an efficient method to design optimal 2-D half-band filters, for which we utilize a 2-D all pass prototype filter of half the order of the desired 2-D half-band filters.

  • In this paper, we propose a new .mu.-controller design method using an equivalent weighting function $W_{\mu}$(s). The proposed mehtod is not guaranteed to converge to the minimum as D-K and .mu.-K iteration method. However, the robust performance problem can be converted into an equivalent $H^{\infty}$ optimization problem of unstructured uncertainty by using an equivalent weightng function $W_{\mu}$(s). Also we can find a .mu.-optimal controller iteratively using an error index $d_{\epsilon}$ of differnce between maximum singular value and .mu.-norm. And under the condition of the same order of scaling functions, the proposed method provides the .mu.-optimal controller with the degree less than that obtained by D-K iteration..

  • Depth calibration is a procedure for finding the conversion function that maps disparity data from a depth-sensing camera to actual distance information. In this paper, we present an optimal depth calibration method for Kinect$^{TM}$ sensors based on an experimental design and convex optimization. The proposed method, which utilizes multiple measurements from only two points, suggests a simplified calibration procedure. The confidence ellipsoids obtained from a series of simulations confirm that a simpler procedure produces a more reliable calibration function.

  • We propose an optimal thresholding method for the voxel coloring in the reconstruction of a 3D shape. Our purposed method is a new approach to resolve the trade-off error of the threshold value on determining the photo-consistency in the conventional method. Optimal thresholding value is decided to compare the photo-consistency of a surface with inside voxel on the optic ray of the center camera. As iterating the process of the vokels, the threshold is approached to the optimal value for the individual surface voxel. And also, graph cut method is reduced to the surface noise on eliminating neighboring voxel. To verify the proposed algorithm, we simulated in the virtual and real environment. It is advantaged to speed up and accuracy of a 3D face reconstruction by applying the methods of optimal threshold and graph as compare with conventional algorithms.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for hierarchical optimal control of nonlinear systems. The proposed method is simple because the solutions are obtained by only exchanging informations of coefficient vector based on interaction prediction principle and FWT(fast Walsh transform) in upper and lower level. Since we solve two point boundary problem with Picard's iterative method and the backward integral operational matrix of Walsh function to obtain the optimal vector of each independent subsystem, the algorithm is simple and its operation is fast without inverse matrix and kronecker product operation. In simulation, the proposed algorithm's usefulness is proved by comparison with the global optimal control methods.

  • The vision system model used for this study involves the six parameters that permits a kind of adaptability in that relationship between the camera space location of manipulable visual cues and the vector of robot joint coordinates is estimated in real time. Also this vision control method requires the number of cameras to transform 2-D camera plane from 3-D physical space, and be used irrespective of location of cameras, if visual cues are displayed in the same camera plane. Thus, this study is to investigate the optimal number of cameras used for the developed vision control system according to the change of the number of cameras. This study is processed in the two ways : a) effectiveness of vision system model b) optimal number of cameras. These results show the evidence of the adaptability of the developed vision control method using the optimal number of cameras.
