Four xanthones were isolated from mycelia of Emericella variecolor, an endophytic fungus isolated from the leaves of Croton oblongifolius. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis to be shamixanthone, 14-methoxytajixanthone-25-acetate, tajixanthone methanoate, and tajixanthone hydrate. All compounds were tested for cytotoxic activity against various human tumor cell lines including gastric carcinoma, colon carcinoma, breast carcinoma, human hepatocarcinoma, and lung carcinoma. The antitumor activities of these xanthones were compared with that of doxorubicin hydrochloride, a chemotherapeutic substance. All of them showed moderate activities and were selective against gastric carcinoma, colon carcinoma, and breast carcinoma. Only tajixanthone hydrate exhibited moderate activity against all cancer cell lines. Furthermore, under the test conditions it was found that 14-methoxytajixanthone-25-acetate and tajixanthone hydrate are almost as active as doxorubicin hydrochloride against gastric carcinoma (KATO3) and breast carcinoma (BT474).
Three known ${\alpha}$-amyrin triterpenoids, ursolic acid (1), $2{\alpha},3{\alpha}$-dihydro xyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid (2) and euscaphic acid (3), and ${\beta}$-amyrin triterpenoid, $3{\beta}$-hydroxyolean-5,12-diene (4), and ${\alpha}$-spinasterol (5) have been isolated from the fractionated n-butanol extracts of the spikes of Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina, guided by DNA topoisomerases I and II inhibitory activities and cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods. Compound 4 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against human colon adenoblastoma (HT-29), and 5 showed DNA topoisomerase I and II inhibitions.
Some known coumarins, decursin, nodakenetin, umbelliferone, 7-demethylsuberosin, columbianetin, decursinol angelate and decursinol, showing significant cytotoxic activities against P388 cell lines, were isolated from the roots of Angelica gigas (Umbelliferae) . 7-Demethylsuberosin and columbianetinwere obtained from Angelica gigas for the first time. Chernotaxonornic difference about coumarins com-ponents between the roots of Angelica gigas and those of A. acutiloba is also discussed.

A minor cytotoxic compound was isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation from Asiasari Radix and identified as aristolactam III(1) on the basis of spectral data and chemical evidence. This is the first report on the isolation of compound 1 from Asiasarum genus. Compound 1 exhibited a significant cytotoxic activity against the three kinds of human cancer cell lines (A 549, SK-MEL-2 and SK-OV-3).
A cytotoxic coumarin against L1210 cell was isolated from the unripe fruit of Poncirus trifoliata ($ED_{5}$) = 10.2 $\mu$ g/ml. Its structure was identified as aurapten, 7-geranyloxycoumarin. Hydrolysis of the substance gave umbelliferone and geraniol. Only geraniol showed the cytotoxic activity ($ED_{53}$ = 6.5 $\mu$g/ml) while umbelliferone and its methyl or allyl derivatives were not active.

The cytotoxic activity of Cratalariae sessiliflorae on cultured NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells (KB) were evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) colorimetric method These fractions of methanol extract of Cratalariae sessiliflorae showed inhibitory effect in vitro in the milligram range against KB cell lines. In general, the antitumor activities of these fractions were does-dependent over the milligram range. The comparison of IC50 values of these fractions in tumor cell lines showed that their susceptibility to these fractions decrease in the following order: Fr. 4> Fr. 6> Fr. 10> Fr. 2> Fr. 11> Fr. 3> Fr. 8> Fr. 7> Fr. 9> Fr. 1> Fr. 5 by the MTT assay. These fractions were tested for their cytotoxic effects on NIH 3T3 fibroblasts using MTT assay. They exhibited potent cytotoxic activities in vitro in the milligram range against NIH 3T3 fibroblasts. In general, the cytotoxic activities of these fractions were does-dependent over the milligram range. The comparison of CD50 values of these fractions in NIH 313 fibroblasts shows that their susceptibility to these fractions in decrease the following order: Fr. 10> Fr. 9> Fr. 2 = Fr. 4> Fr. 8> Fr. 11> Fr. 1 = Fr. 7> Fr. 3> Fr. 5 = Fr. 6 by the MTT assay. These results suggests that fraction 5 has the most growth - inhibitory activity against KB cell lines.
Panax ginseng has been extensively used in the traditional oriental medicine as a restorative, tonic and Prophylactic agent. Recently, several reports regarding to anticancer effects of Panax ginseng has accumulated. These studies emphasized the fact that the anticancer activities might be due to a glycoside group called ginsenoside or pan.u saponin which has a water soluble characteristic. However, the authors and collaborates demonstrated that a highly lipid soluble component in extract of Panax ginseng roots contains a considerable cytotoxic activities against marine leukemic cells (L1210, P388) and human censer cells (HRT-18, HT-29, HCT48). This study was devised to observe the cytotoxic activities of Petroleum-ether extract of Panax giuseng roots (crude GBD and its Partially Purified fraction from silicic acid column chromatography (7 : 3 GX) against sarcoma-180 (5-180) and Walker carcinosar- coma 256 (Walker 256) in vivo, and murine leukemic Lymphocytes (L1210) and human rectal cancer cells (HRT-18) and human colon cancer cells (HT-29 and HCT48) in vitro. Each cell-line was cultured in medium containing serial concentration of the crude GX or 7 : 3 GX in vitro. A highly lipid soluble compound in the extract of Panax ginseng root was cytocidal to murine leukemic cells and human colon and rectal cancer cells in vitro. In the meantime, ginseng saponin derivatives did not have cytotoxic effects at its corresponding concentration. The growth rates of the cancer cells in medium containing ginseng extracts were inhibited gradually to a significant degree roughly in proportion to the increase of the extract concentration. The cytotoxic activity of 7 : 3 GX was about 3 times more potent than that of crude GX, one unit of cytotoxic activity against L1210 cells being equivalent to 2.54 Ug and 058 Ug for the crude GX and 7 : 3 GX, respectively. The Ri value of the active compound on silica- gel thin layer chromatography with petroleum-ether/ethyl ether/acetic acid mixture (90 : 10 : 1, v/v/v) as a developing so lvent was 053. While, the Panaxydol and Panaxynol as active compounds were purified from Petroleum-ether extract of Panax ginseng root by Drs. Ahn and Kim, and author found out that the one unit of cytotoxic activity of the Panaxydol and Panaxynol against L1210 cells being equivalent to 056 Ug and 0.3918 respectively. The survival times of mice inoculated with S-180 cells were extended about 1.5 to 2 times by the 7 : 3 GX treatment compared with their control group. The significantly decreased hemoglobin values of rats after inoculation with Walker 256 were recovered to normal range by oral administration of the crude Gt The synthetic levels of protein, DNA and RNA in human colon and rectal cancer cells were significantly diminished by treatment with the crude GX, which can explain a part of the origin of its anticancer activity.

We investigated the cytotoxic effects of roots and seeds Daucus carota L. on HepG2, HeLa, MCF7, SW626, C6 and NB41A3 cell lines by the MTT assay. Among extracts, the ethylacetate partition layer (DCMEA) of root of Daucus carota L. showed the strongest cytotoxic effects on HepG2, HeLa, C6 and NB41A3 cell lines. On the other hand, methanol(DCM), n-ethylacetate(DCMEA) and n-butanol(DCMB) extract of the seeds of Daucus carota L. also showed significant cytotoxic activities for all six cell lines. $\beta$-carotene, a well-known main component of Daucus carota L. was also tested for its cytotoxic effect. However, in all six cell lines, $\beta$-carotene falied to show significant cytotoxicity. Therefore, the anticancer effect of DCMEA of root fo Daucus carota L. and DCM, DCMH, DCMEA and DCMB extracts of seeds may be caused by components other than $\beta$-carotene. Futher studies are under way to isolate the compounds responsible for the significant cytotoxic activity.
The calyx extract of Campsis grandiflora displayed inhibitory activity against protein kinase C from the bovine brain. Separation guided by protein kinase C enzyme assay and bleb forming assay led to isolation of a potent protein kinase C inhibitor that was identified as a known phenylpropanoid glycoside, verbascoside. It suppressed completely bleb-formation of K562 cell surface induced by phorbol 12,13-dibutylate at the concentration of 60 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and IC$_{50}$ of the protein kinase C occured at 20 $\mu{M}$. This compound was tested for cytotoxic activity against ten human tumor cell lines in vitro. it exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against skin tumor cell line M14 (IC$_{50}$ 2.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) and very weak cytotoxicity against other cell lines (IC$_{50}$>10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml)
Analogues of $2(S)-5, 2^{l}, 5^{l}$-trihydroxy-7, 8-dimethoxyflavanone, a naturally-occurring compound, which had been reported to have potent antitumor activity, were synthesized and examined for the cytotoxicity against three cancer cell lines. Among the intermediate chalcones and synthetic 5-hydroxy-7, 8-dimethoxyflavanone analogues, $({\pm})2^{l}, 5^{l}-dibenzyloxy-5, 7, 8-trimethoxyflavanone$ exhibited about 2-8 times stronger activity than $2(S)-5, 2^{l}, 5^{l}$-trihydroxy-7, 8-dimethoxyflavanone against L1210, K562 and A549 cancer cell lines. In the structure-activity relationship, it is suggested that among analogues of 5-hydroxy-7, 8-dimethoxyflavanone, the existence of two oxygenated groups of para-relation at $C-2^{I} and C-5^{I}$ positions on flavanone B-ring, may be necessary to exhibit effective cytotoxic activity.
