  • Intravenous administration of hydro-methanolic extract of Cyperus scariosus (3-10 mg/kg) produced hypotensive and bradcardiac effects. These effects remianed unaltered in atropinized animals indicating that cardiovascular effects of the plant extract are not medliated through activation of muscarinic receptors. In the in vitro studies, it suppressed the spontaneous contractions of guinea-pig paired atria, rat ulterus and rabbit jejunum in a concentration-dependent (0.1-1 mg/ml) manner. It also inhibited histanmine or acetylcholine-induced contractions of guinea-pig ieum indicating non-sepcific spasmolytic action. In rabbit aorta, it inhibited norepinephrine $(10\;mu{M)}$ as well as $K^+$ (80mM)-induced contractions at similar concentrations (0.1-1 mg/ml). These data indicate that cyperus scariosus contains $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker-like constituent(s) which may explain hypotensive effect observed in vivo and the general spasmolytic activity of plant explain its folkloric use in diarrhoea.

  • The emergences of Echinochloa glabrescens, Monochoria vaginalis, and Cyperus difformis seeds were little affected by fertilizer application. All shading treaments resulted in decrease in emergence of E. glabrescens, while shading up to 67% slightly stimulated emergence of M. vaginalis and C. difformis. The peak emergence of E. glabrescens was at two week after sowing in the full sunlight, 31, and 52% shading, but no peak emergence at the 67% shading. Emergence peaks of C. difformis were observed during 6 to 8 weeks after sowing for all shading levels employed.

  • In order to enhance herbicidal efficacy of amide and diazine herbicides, synergistic effects of pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene or butachlor and pyrazolate on control of Cyperus serotinus were determined by isobole method. Interaction indices(I) between pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene treated at 0 and 3rd leaf stage were 2.64 and 2.07 and hence showed synergistic effect for control of Cyperus serotinus. The points indicated Imax between pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene were 0.7:1.3 g ai/a and 9.0:20.5 g ai/a at 0 and 3rd leaf stage, respectively. Combination of butachlor and pyrazolate showed synergistic effect(1=1.57) on control of Cyperus serorinus and point indicated Imax was 48.0:20.9 g ai/a.

  • Five compounds were isolated from the methanol extract of the tubers of Cyperus rotundus (Cyperaceae). They were identified as cyperol(1), ${\alpha}-cyperone(2)$, cyperotundone(3), sugetriol triacetate(4) and ${\beta}-sitosterol(5)$ on the basis of spectroscopic and physicochemical analysis. Among them, cyperol, ${\alpha}-cyperone$ and cyperotundone were shown inhibitroy effects on LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dose dependent manner.

  • The survey of weed population in paddy field was carried out to invegstigate the weed group on 340 fields in Kyonggi Area in 1991. The weed species observed include 4 species of grasses, 7 species of sedges, and 14 species of broadleaf weeds, and the ratio of annual weed vs perennial weed was 25 : 75. Major dominant weed species were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli and Cyperus serotinus. The dominant weed species in South Plain Region were Echinochloa crusgalli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitariu trifolia, Cyperus strotinus, in West Coast Region were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus serotinus, in East Interior Region were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus difformis and were Sagitaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Echinochloa crusgalli and Monochoria vaginalis in North Region. The dominant weed species in Normal and Poorly drained soil were Eleocharis kuroguwdi, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli and Cyperus serotinus and were Scirpus maritinus, Cyperus serotinus, Echinochlod crusgalli and Myriophyllum verticillatum in Saline Soil. More and many weeds were growing in single cropped field than double cropped field.

  • Competitive ability was determined for two different varieties, Josaengtongil (early maturing indicajaponica type) and Jinheung (medium maturing japonica type), against Cyperus serotinus(nut sedge). An increase of rice density increased competitive ability of rice to C. serotinus. The results indicate that the use of tall and medium maturingvariety like Jinheung provides better competitive ability against C. serotinus than Josaengtongil, a semi-dwarf and early maturing type.

  • In the course of screening for antioxidant compounds by measuring the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging effect and superoxide quenching activity, methanol extract of Cyperus difformis (Cyperaceae) was found to show potent antioxidant activities. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract led to the isolation of three phenolic compounds, rosmarinic acid (1), luteolin (2) and caffeic acid (3). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic studies. Three compounds showed the significant antioxidative effects on DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging effects, riboflavin and xanthin originated superoxide quenching activities. Among them, compound 3 showed the most significant antioxidative effects on those four antioxidant tests. Compound 3 showed better antioxidative activities than vitamin C.
