  • Temporal variation of demersal fish in Asan Bay was determined by analyzing seasonal samples collected by an otter tyawl from November 1990 to August 1993. Of 49 species identified, Cynogiossus joyneri, Thrissa koreans and Johnius belengerii predominated in abundance, consisting of $84.7\%$ in fish numbers and $70.5\%$ in biomass. The number of species did not show any significant seasonal variation. Fish numbers and biomass were comparatively high 3n spring, summer and tall, and low in winter. Community structure, analyzed by principal component analysis using rank correlation, showed a clear seasonal trend, which seems to be related to the seasonal effects such as temperature. The number of species and their abundance in the study area were lower than those in other embayments of Korean peninsula. It seems that unstability of the sediments by tidal mixing caused this phenomenon. The total number of species decreased annually. The species of which the frequency of occurrence tends to diminish as time were mainly composed of the species which rarely occurred with low abundance.

  • Diurnal and tidal variation in the abundance of the macro- and megabenthic assemblages were studied in the macrotidal flat, Incheon, Korea. The samples were collected by modified otter trawl during 8-9, June 2000. The macro- and megabenthic assemblages comprised a total of 60 species, including 6,309 individuals and 67,835.5 gWWt. As a result, the abundance pattern showed two different categories relating to diel and tidal cycles. First, the diel pattern of these assemblages was subdivided into 3 groups. 1) Diurnal species such as Hexagrammos otakii, Thryssa baelama, Loligo beka, Metapenaeus joyneri. 2) Nocturnal species such as Cynoglossus joyneri, Sebastes schlegeli, Charybdis japonica, Crangon affinis, Trachysalambria curvirostris, Metapenaeopsis dalei. 3)Other species showing no obvious pattern with Johnius grypotus, Platycephalus indicus, Repomucenus richardsonii. However, based on the result of Mann-Whitney U-test, diel patterns of macro- and megabenthos did not reveal any significant differences. Second, tidal variation in the macro- and megabenthic assemblages was significant between ebb and flood tides. Total macro- and megafaunal species number, abundance and biomass were higher in ebb tide$(13^h30',\;16^h30',\;1^h30',\;4^h30')$ than in flood tide$(19^h30',\;21^h30',\;10^h30',\;13^h00')$. As a consequence, the macro- and megabenthic assemblages were clearly influenced by tides but their diel variations were not significantly different.

  • It was turned out by the beam trawl survey in 2009 that flora of three phylum 16 species and fauna of eight taxa 68 families 97 species were inhabited in the Seomjin River estuary and western coastal waters of Namhae island. Winter season showed the most various appearance of species with 63 species and markedly several kinds of algae species, while summer season showed the lowest number of species with 44 species. However, the indices of species diversity and evenness were highest in summer, and vice versa in winter. Major dominant species were Crangon hakodatei, Leiognathus nuchalis, Asterias amurensis, Thryssa kammalensis, Luidia quinaria, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Oratosquilla oratoria, Charybdis bimaculata, Cynoglossus joyneri, Pennahia agentata. The 10 dominant species occupied at 81.4% of catch in number and 49.0% of catch in weight. There were seasonal fluctuations and differences by station in the Seomjin River estuary and western coastal waters of Namhae island, which brought to the difference of length structures, that is, bigger-sized individuals of major dominant species at station A (near to river estuary) than station C (near to ocean). Species compositions by season and by station were separated to two groups. Winter season showed a separated species composition from other seasons and station A exhibited a different species composition from other stations, which was located at near to the Seomjin River estuary.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition of fish in the estuary of Saemangeum water in the western coast of Korea was determined using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl from April 2001 to February 2002. Species compositions did not differ significantly among the 4 stations (p>0.05, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The cumulative number of species and species diversity (H') approached asymptote after four 30-min trawl hauls. Therefore 30-min trawl samples from each of the four stations were pooled to represent each season. A total of 45 species 2758 individuals and 30,346.8 g of fish were collected during the study period. Of the fish collected Leiognathus nuchalis, Synechogobius hasta, Neosalanx jordani, Konosirus punctatus and Chaeturichthys stigmatias predominated in abundance accounting for $68\%$ of the total number of individuals. Seasonal variation of fish abundance showed a similar trend to those of the other western coastal waters of Korea. The resident species were collected only in spring and autumn. Number of species and biomass were highest in summer due to the catch of many migrating species. In winter catch amount was low, and only 7 species were collected.. Brackish water fishes were more abundant in the study area, and Johnius grypotus and Cynoglossus joyneri were not premominated compared to the other coastal waters. This difference in species compositions may be related to the lower salinity in this estuarine habitat than in the other western coastal waters of Korea.

  • Changes of fish species composition were analyzed using seasonal samples collected from Lake Shihwa and adjacent coastal water from October 1995 to August 1996. Pelagic clupeids, Cynoglossus joyneri and Johnius belengerii predominated in abundance in the adjacent coastal water. In the lake, clupeids, gobies and freshwater Carassius carassius were collected in autumn. The clupeids, unable to overwinter in the open water, disappeared after winter. The gobies and C. carassius were also disappeared in spring except a few number of Acanthogobius hasta. A large number of Tridentiger trigonocephalus and Eleotris oxycephala were collected in summer, supposed to move into the lake during the exchange of water in lake and sea water. However, they were all died in the middle of August. The concentration of ammonium-nitrogen was higher than 2 mg/l, which was higher than 50% lethal concentraton in other fishes. Increase in temperature and pH in spring may elevate the toxicity of ammonium to fish. We discussed the effect of the other factors of the polluted water in the lake on the disappearance of fish.

  • To investigate seasonal variation of fisheries resources composition and their correlationships with environmental factors in the coastal ecosystem of the middle Yellow Sea of Korea, shrimp beam trawl were carried out for the fisheries survey. Fisheries resources of 81 species, 57 families, and 6 taxa totally were collected by shrimp beam trawl in the middle coastal ecosystem of Yellow Sea of Korea. Species were included 6 species in Bivalvia, 6 in Cephalopoda, 22 in Crustacea, 2 in Echinodermata, 5 in Gastropoda, and 40 in Pisces. Diversity indices (Shannon index, H') showed seasonal variation with low value of 2.14 in winter, and high value of 2.67 in spring. Main dominant species were Oratosquilla oratoria, Octopus ocellatus, Acanthogobius lactipes, Cynoglossus joyneri, Rapana venosa venosa, Loligo beka, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, Raja kenojei, Microstomus achne and Paralichthys olivaceus, that were occupied over 58% of total individuals, and 55% of wet weight. Fisheries organism made four coordinative seasonal groups by the principal component analysis (PCA), showing stronger seasonal variation than spatial variation. PC from PCA showed statistically significant cross-correlationships with seawater temperature, $NH_4$-N, TP and chlorophyll a (P < 0.05).

  • Physical, chemical and biological surveys on Nakdong River estuary were made from October, 1985 to September, 1986. 1. For all the seasons except summer, the sea surface temperature in northwest area of the line which linked from Seo Island to Jisim Island was I-2$^{\circ}$C lower than in southeast area, but in summer the sea surface temperature in northwest area was I-2$^{\circ}$C higher than in southeast area. On the contrary, bottom temperature of coastal area was 1$^{\circ}$C higher than that of oceanic area except winter. 2. Surface salinity in summer and fall has minimum value of 1. 9%0 and maximum value of 32.9%0. This large variation was caused by the runoff of the Nakdong River. Effect of less saline Nakdong River water in northwest area of the line which linked from Seo Island to Jisim Island was greater than in southeast area. A strong current rip always formed near this line. 3. The yellowish-green colored zone was observed in the Nakdong River estuary throughout the year by influence of river discharge. The characteristics of the water quality in the zone have shown that the water color was grade 7 by the Forel water-color meter, transparency was less than 4 m, and concentration of suspended solids was more than 5 mg/1. This water body was in the state of eutrophication in terms of chlorophyll-a and inorganic nitrogen concentration during summer season. 4. During the study period, total 276 taxa were identified. Most of them were diatoms and dinoflagellates which consisted of 97.5%. The component ratio of the above two groups was 84.4% and 13.1 % respectively. Diatoms were plentiful in December and dinoflagellates in July. Dominant species were Nitzschia seriata in October, Thalassiosira rotula in December, Skeletoncma costatum in April, and Nitzschia longissima in July. 5. A total of 47 zooplankton taxa was identified from the samples collected. Copepods were numerically the most important components of zooplankton communities in the study area. The domir:ant copepod species were Paracalanus parvus, Acartia clausi and Temora turbinata. Noctiluca scintillans was the next important component. The other zooplankton with minor abundance were Cladocera. Sagitta spp., Cnidaria, Mysidacea, Lucifer spp. and Amphipoda. 6. During the study period, fishes from 47 families and 87 species were sampled in th~ study area. The four most abundant fish species were Rep~mucen//'s valencicnnei, Leiognathus n~cha!is, Amblychaeturicllthys hexanema and Sardirel/a zun:zsi. The fish species of the secondary importance in abundance were Cynoglossus joyneri, Sillago sihama, Engra~lis japonicus, Encdrias nebulos'l, Acanthogobius flavimanus, Trichiurus lepturus, LiParis tanai/ai, Cynagloss//'s interruptus, Aj)ogon line:z!us, Thrissz la 1l.'1la!ensis, and Limanda yokohamac.
