  • Cavity expansion and contraction solutions for cylindrical and spherical cavities in unsaturated residual soils are presented in this paper. Varying soil state in the plastic zone is accounted by a numerical approach, wherein an element-by-element discretization of the plastic zone of both expanding and contracting cavities is carried out. Unlike existing methods utilizing self-similarity technique, the solution procedure enables the prediction of entire soil-state at any stage of expansion and subsequent contraction. It is also applicable for both cavity creation and expansion problems. The approach adopts constant contribution of suction to effective stress (constant Xs drainage condition) for analysis. The analysis procedure is validated by interpreting the previously reported pressuremeter test results in lateritic residual soil. The typical cavity expansion and contraction characteristics of unsaturated Indian lateritic soil were then examined using this solution procedure. The effect of initial soil-state on cavity limit pressure, plastic radius, reverse yield pressure, and reverse plastic radius are also presented.

  • In this paper, an incoherent imaging of a high-contrast cylindrical cavity in a lossy medium illuminated by the time-harmonic cylindrical wave is obtained via the backprojections of the intensity patterns of the forward total electric field in the cross-borehole measurement configuration. The phenomenon that the interference fringes in the intensity pattern, which are caused by the superposition of the incident field and the scattered field with different optical paths, are removed in the backprojection process is interpreted numerically. This imaging method is validated by imaging an air circular cylinder in a lossy medium of $\varepsilon$$_{r}$=9 and $\sigma$ = 0.0005, 0.002 S/m, and the conditions for obtaining better images are investigated.d.

  • Orientation of E7 liquid crystals(LCs) confined to 200 nm-diameter cylindrical cavities of Anodisc membranes are investigated by FTIR dichroism techniques. The cavity walls of the confining pores are chemically modified with different perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PCA, $C_nF_{2n+1}$COOH, n=3, 4, 5, 6). From the FTIR spectra of PCA treated alumina Anodsic membranes, we found the salt formation between -COOH group of PCA and Anodisc membrane. From the FTIR spectra of LC filled Anodisc membranes, we found abrupt alignment direction change of LC molecules between n=4 and 5 for 1 mM PCA treated Anodisc membranes, from parallel to perpendicular direction to the cavity walls. But 5mM PCA treated Anodisc membranes, alignment direction of LC molecules changed between n=3 and n=4, from parallel to perpendicular direction.

  • Orientation of E7 liquid crystals (LCs) confined to 200 nm-diameter cylindrical cavities of Anodisc membranes are investigated by FTIR dichroism techniques. The cavity walls of the confining pores are chemically modified with different aliphatic acids ($C_nH_{2n+1}COOH$, n=5, 6, 7, 9). From the FTIR spectra of aliphatic acid treated alumina Anodsic membranes, we found the salt formation between -COOH group of aliphatic acid and Anodisc membrane. From the FTIR spectra of LC filled Anodisc membranes, we found abrupt alignment direction change of LC molecules between n=6 and 7 for 2% aliphatic acid treated Anodisc membranes, from parallel to perpendicular direction to the cavity walls. But 4% aliphatic acid treated Anodisc membranes, alignment direction of LC molecules changed between n=5 and n=6, from parallel to perpendicular direction. The same trend was observed for $^2H-NMR$ measurements.

  • In this paper, the wave propagation in an infinite poroelastic cylindrical bone with cavity is studied. An exact closed form solution is presented by employing an analytical procedure. The frequency equation for poroelastic bone is obtained when the boundaries are stress free and is examined numerically. The magnitude of the frequency equation, wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are calculated for poroelastic bone for different values of magnetic field, density and frequency. In wet bone little frequency dispersion was observed, in contrast to the results of earlier studies. Such a model would in particular be useful in large-scale parametric studies of bone mechanical response. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, density and frequency on wave propagation in poroelastic bone are very pronounced.

  • A new method is presented for the isolation of resonances from scattered waves for elastic wave resonance scattering problems. The resonance scattering function consisting purely of resonance information is defined. Elastic wave resonance scattering from a water-filled cylindrical cavity imbedded in an aluminum matrix is numerically analyzed. The classical resonance scattering theory and the new method compute different magnitudes and phases of the resonances from each partial wave, and therefore. their total resonance spectra are quite different. The exact $\pi$ - radians phase shifts through the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies show that the proposed method properly extracts the vibrational resonance information of the scatterer compared to resonance scattering theory.

  • Caracteristics of cylindrical rectanyular patch microshtrip resonator are analyzed by cavity model. To minimize the error of resonant frequency due to fringing field, the resonant frequency is calcylated by the concept of effective dielectric constant. The transmisson type resonator operating at 3GHz is designed and manufactured. The measured data of the resonant frequency and reflection loss are 3.019Ghz and \ulcorner32.78dB respectively. These results nearly coincide with theoretical results.

  • A prototype for a highly sensitive, automated measurement system for the microwave surface resistance of high-T$_c$ superconductor films was set up, and tested by measuring the microwave surface resistances of high-T$_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) films at the frequency of about 19.6 GHz and the temperature of 30 K ${\sim}$ 90 K. An open-ended TE$_{011}$ mode sapphire-loaded cylindrical cavity resonator was used as the measurement probe, where YBCO films were used as the endplates of the cylindrical cavity. The characteristics of the measurement system include functions to display the unloaded ${\varrho}$ and the resonant frequency of the TE$_{011}$ mode resonator as well as the microwave surface resistance of the YBCO films, all simultaneously as a function of temperature. Applicability of the measurement system for investigating the homogeneity in the microwave properties of large high-T$_c$ superconductor films is discussed.

  • The exact electromagnetic field in cylindrical cavity with concentric dielectric rod is analyzed. Resonant frequency of dielectric loaded cavity is calculated by analyzing the characteristic equation. The characteristic equation is solved by using the ContourPlot graph of Mathematica. As the result of comparing calculation value and experimental value of resonant frequencies, we know that the field representation of traveling mode is exact.
