Investigation of the Vortex Shedding with the Shear Building (전단건물을 이용한 와류발산현상 파악)

  • To study the vortex induced vibrations the wind tunnel and the two story shear building were designed and built. The wind tunnel was designed to generate the wind speed up to 24 m/s, and the building was designed to have the two lowest natural frequencies within the range of the vortex frequencies generated by the wind tunnel. The resonance behaviors by the locking-on phenomena were observed during the wind tunnel tests of the shear building with the cylinder attached. From the locking-on phenomena observed it is found that the effects of the amplitudes and the frequencies of the cylinders should be considered on the forces generated by the vortex shedding.

  • A theoretical study of three-dimensional unsteady compressible non-reacting flow inside double flow of monolith catalytic converter system attached to 6-cylinder engine was performed for the achievement of performance improvement, reduction of light-off time, and longer service life by improving the flow distribution of pulsating exhaust gases. The differences between unsteady and steady-state flow were evaluated through the numerical computations. To obtains the boundary conditions to a numerical analysis, one dimensional non-steady gas dynamic calculation was also performed by using the method of characteristics in intake and exhaust system. Studies indicate that unsteady representation is necessary because pulsation of gas velocity may affect gas flow uniformity within the monolith. The simulation results also show that the level of flow maldistribution in the monolith heavily depends on curvature and angles of separation streamline of mixing pipe that homogenizes the exhaust gas from individual cylinders. It is also found that on dual flow converter systems, there is severe interactions of each pulsating exhaust gas flow and the length of mixing pipe and junction geometry influence greatly on the degree of flow distribution.

  • A pepper harvester using a pair of counter rotating helically wound cylinders as a pepper removal mechanism has been developed. Pepper harvesting by machines under the customary cultivation practice was expected to lower land productivity, that most farmers were concerned about. As one way to compensate for loss in land productivity by machine harvest, experts on pepper cultivation suggested change of both varieties and plant density per area. From the view of machine design, their suggestion implied that distance between rows should be narrower and height of the pepper removal mechanism could be shorter. Experiments to improve perfect pepper recovery ratio and to reduce size of the pepper removal mechanism was accomplished. In order to be a economically feasible harvester, minimum pepper recovery ratio was required to be greater or equal to 80%. The research goal was achieved by both reducing the diameter of the wire-helices from 30 cm to 18 cm and increasing rotational speed of the wire-helices up to 425 rpm. The best perfect pepper recovery ratio was 82.3%. Validity of experiment design and interpretation on statistical analysis were discussed. To understand the pepper removal mechanism properly, a pepper removal theory based physics was judged to be necessary.

The Effect of Multiple Injections on the Stability of Combustion and Emissions Characteristic in a Passenger Car Diesel Engine (승용차 디젤엔진의 연료 다단 분사가 연소 안정 및 배출물 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the stability of combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine at various operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a diesel engine, the fuel injection timing was varied one main injection and two pilot injections at various conditions. The experimental apparatus consisted of DI diesel engine with four cylinders, EC dynamometer, multi-stage injection control system, and exhaust emissions analyzer. The combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed for the main, pilot-main injection, pilot-pilot-main injection strategies. It is revealed that the combustion pressure was smoothly near the top dead center and the coefficient of variations is reduced due to the effect of pilot injection. Also, $NO_x$ emissions are dramatically decreased with pilot injection because the decrease of rate of heat release. However, the soot is increased at early pilot injection and main injection.

  • The direct injection into the cylinders has been regarded as a way of the reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The spray produced from the injector of DIS(Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine is of paramount importance in DISI engines. Fan-spray injector as well as swirl-spray injector was developed and utilized to the DISI engines. The interaction between air flow and fuel spray was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside the cylinder of the DISI engineer. The direct Mie scattered images presented the macroscopic view of the liquid spray fields interacted with crossflow. Particle sizes of fuel droplets were measured with phase Doppler anemometer(PDA) system. A faster cross-flow field made SMD larger and $D_{10}$ smaller. The experiments show the interaction of air flow field and the fuel spray field of fan-spray. The results can be utilized to construct the data-base for the spray and fuel-air mixing mechanism as a function of the flow characteristics.

  • A numerical procedure is described for predicting steady drift forces on very large offshore structures supported by a large number of the floating bodies of arbitrary shape dimensional source distributing method, the wave interaction theory, the far-field method of using momentum theory and the finite element method for structurally treating the space frame elements. Numerical results are compared with the experimental or numerical ones, which are obtained in the literature, of steady drift forces on a offshore structure supported by the 33(3 by 11) floating composite vertical cylinders in waves. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

  • Accurate prediction of ship dynamics, particularly roll motion, is very important in ship safety. In the past, empirical or vortex based methods were commonly used for the hydrodynamic roll damping predictions but they could not be applied to practical ship roll motion cause of limitations about geometries ad design conditions. Recently RANS-based techniques are developed for the practical ship motion analysis. In this study, RANS based roil analysis about a rectangular cylinder with WAVIS developed by MOERI/KORDI are performed and compared with the experimental data and other RANS results.

  • In order to enable fail-safe operation the electro-hydrostatic actuators can be dualized. When a symmetrical actuator is combined in series with an asymmetrical actuator with single rod cylinder, the flow rates of their cylinders are unmatched. If their position controller has same configuration, one of their pumps can supply too much flow rate under particular load conditions, which should be bypassed into low pressure side e.g. by a relief valve. In this paper it is shown how the hydraulic circuit for the asymmetrically combined electro-hydrostatic actuator can be designed without sacrificing power consumption.

  • The structure design of divertor Multi-Functional Maintenance Platform (MFMP) actuated by hydraulic system for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) was introduced in this paper. The model of MFMP was established according to maintenance requirements. In this paper, Newton-Euler method and the improved virtual work principle were used, the equivalent driving force of each actuator was obtained through the equivalent Jacobian inverse matrix derived from velocity relationship among the components. The accuracy of the model was verified by ADAMS simulation. The stability control of the heavy-duty components driven by hydraulic cylinders based on Newton-Euler method and improved virtual work principle was established.

Natural vibrations of laminated anisotropic shells of revolution (적층 이방성 회전체 쉘의 고유진동 해석)

  • Any arbitrarily shaped laminated composite shells of revolution can be sum of the conical shell elements. Therefore, finite element model of conical shell element will be developed in this study. To verify consistency and validity of this model, natural vibrations of this model is compared with the analytical solution of cylindrical shell. Herein, an extensive parametric study is presented to assess the modeling capability of this model in class of laminated composite cylinders. It is seen that the proposed model provides highly accurate results with analytical solution. Once development of this conical shell element is done, any arbitrarily shaped composite shells of revolution can be easily analyzed.
