  • The characteristics of the flow processes in the cylinder of the two-stroke cycle engines have become the subject of increasing and attention owing to the simplicity and the higher power per unit weight of the two-stroke cycle engine. Among the many factors which influence on the scavenging flow, the port angle is important factor. Hence, four different type models with one inlet-port and two side-ports are studied to show the effect of port angle on the laminar scavenging flow. When the inlet-port axial is relatively larger than the side-port axial angle, it is showed that the fresh charge penetrate into the burned gas and displace it first toward the cylinder head and then toward the exhaust port. When the inlet-port axial angle is much less than the side-port axial angle, the fresh charge through the inlet-port directly move toward the exhaust port. The result showed that the model A may suppress the generation of vortices in the vicinity of inlet and side prots which restrict the sufficient supply of fresh charge and obstruct the perfect displacement of all combustion products.

  • This paper is the second investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous work, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems. In this study, intake valve angle is selected as a main parameter for the assessment because the main flow direction to cylinder governed by this angle has the strongest influence on the in-cylinder flow pattern. For this purpose, four heads, which have the different angle, are prepared and the flow characteristics are estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, which is widely used plane in the steady flow measurement. The results show that both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75 plane, however, the effects of two factors act in the opposite direction. In addition, the profile's influence is much greater than that of the eccentricity.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional transient simulation with a knock model was performed to predict knock occurrence and autoignition site in a heavy-duty LPG engine. A FAE (Flame Area Evolutoin) premixed combustion model was applied to simulate flame propagation. The coefficient of the reduced kinetic model was adjusted to LPG fuel and used to simulate autoignition in the unburned gas region. Engine experiments using a single-cylinder research engine were performed to calibrate the reduced kinetic model and to verify the results of the modeling. A pressure transducer and a head-gasket type ion-probe circuit board were installed in order to detect knock occurrences, flame arrival angles, and autoignition sites. Knock occurrence and position were compared for different piston bowl shapes. The simulation concurred with engine experimental data regarding the cylinder pressure, flame arrival angle, knock occurrence, and autoignition site. Furthermore, it provided much information about in-cylinder phenomena and solutions that might help reducing the knocking tendency. The knock simulation model presented in this paper can be used for a development tool of engine design.

  • Combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine is closely related to the intake port system. It is therefore important to understand the swirl flow characteristics formed by a helical intake port. However there are still many uncertainties. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the effects of the valve eccentricity ratio and the inlet flow conditions of a helical intake port on the characteristics of an in-cylinder swirl flow. A steady state flow test rig consisted of ISM(impulse swirl meter), LFM(laminar flow meter) and cylinder head with a helical intake port was used. The swirl ratio(Rs) and mean flow coefficient(Cf(mean)) with inlet flow conditions were measured. The results of these experiment can be summarized as follows. Swirl flow characteristics of a helical intake port are affected by the inlet flow conditions, and especially they are much affected by the length of a manifold runner and the rotational angle of a curved manifold runner.

  • The temperature and soot of the visualized diesel engine's turbulent flow of flame was qualitatively measured. In combustion chamber, in order to judge the affect that the swirl has on the in-cylinder's current, was used two different heads with different values. Using the high speed camera, and the results were analyzed using the heat release rate produced by the pressure sensor. In order to measure the temperature and soot of the turbulent flames like that of the diesel flames two color methods were used temperature and the soot of the flames according to the conditions through analyzing the two wavelengths of the flames. It was possible to measure the highest temperature of the non-swirl head visualized engine which is approximately 2400K, and that swirl head engine managed up to 2100K. With respect to the visualized diesel engine soot, we got the grasp of the KL factor which bears the qualitative information of soot. This study is dedicated to suggesting the possibility of measuring not only the temperature but also soot of the diffusion flame of the diesel engine turbulent flames through such method.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of compression ratio on engine performance in a LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine converted from a diesel engine. In ordor to determine the ideal compression ratio, a variable compression ratio 4-cylinder engine was developed. Retrofitting a diesel engine into a LPG engine is technically very complicated compared to a gasoline to LPG conversion. The cylinder head and the piston crown were modified to bum LPG in the engine. Compression ratios were increased from 8 to 10 in an increment of 0.5, the ignition timing was controlled to be at MBT(Minimum Spark Advance for Best Torque) for each case.

  • A new method of knock detection in SI engines, using a change of ion concentration in the combustion chamber, was developed. In order to measure in-cylinder ionization current, ionization probes were installed at spark plug and cylinder head of production engine. It was found that the electric current generated by ionized gas in core burned gas region of knocking cycle is between 2 and 10 times larger than that of normal cycle, because the burned gas temperature which is the dominant parameter of a change of ion concentration increases. However, a change of ionization current in boundary region of burned gas is relatively weak. Hence a change of ion concentration in core burned gas region can be used for knock detection.
